  1. What a great thread! Reminds me of a few things -- Mostly in relation to weight. While at dinner with my almost 80 year old mother, she says Oh you getting so fat (and in the same breath) here finish this. Here on the Big Island of Hawaii the nick name is the Healing isle so called for the plethora of alternative health therapists, raw foodists...
  2. No History in my family either, going back 3 generations but I got it at age 55 full on celiac. There are many theories why this happens but I tend to think it was the modified wheats from the late 60s and my generation being the first to have fast foods and all the chemical additives from the post WWll era. I've not had any intentional slip-ups but...
  3. Breathing flour is a big problem for me and always causes a painful reaction within a fairly short time. if I accidently eat something I get a DH reaction rather than the gut pain from breathing in something. Short of getting a different job, I would try the mask. I wear them when I have to go in a kitchen within 24 hours after a bread class. Sometimes there...
  4. If the popularity keeps up I bet we'll see the Top Chef Network!
  5. Congrats! it's really great. Does he plan on more writing? He did great! \
  6. Bonefish is a chain owned by Outback that has a great gluten-free menu. You would never know it's a chain too. Great gluten-free selection.
  7. I've also had mixed experiences with airlines. The flight attendant on Continental felt sorry for me since the gluten-free meal was so small she dumped 2 bagels on top of my salad -- good thing I wasn't hungry. JAL going one way forgot the meal and the other way the only thing i could eat was the rice. On American I usually just order a fruit plate...
  8. I suspect it will be on reruns or DVD's before you know it. I wanted to post the episode I was on up on my website but couldnt get permission. take care
  9. Right, it was Marcel. Watching him on TV you loved to hate him. He was the nicest guy in the bunch though. He was the only one to come around and thank all the farmers and workers at the Hilton. Tom did come around to welcome everyone but that was it. Sure would be good to see them do some sort of allergen free sort of thing. ken
  10. Thanks for posting it! Like you said it cant hurt to keep sending it.. ken
  11. It was fun-- We dont have a TV so I have to get my fix when I'm at a friends or on the road. What was interesting in season 2 is the guy that everyone hated was really the nicest guy(I forget the names). He was the only one to come around and thank everyone for their help.
  12. Glad to know I'm not the only one getting ill walking in the wrong section of the store! Bought a face mask for the next time I want to look for wine at costco! take care
  13. There are two things I look for when getting glutened after eating something gluten-free. Where did I walk and what did I breath. (Like yesterday at costco store being too close to the bakery section.) and cross contamination issues. So where did you eat?, at home or restaurant? -- I guess for me its more of these issues than and allergy to something...
  14. Went to buy a bottle of wine which at our costco here in Kona is next to the bakery. as soon as I got near it, I could smell the bread and turned around to leave the area. By the time I got to check out I was almost doubled over in pain from breathing in the flour. Lucky to get home before the runs started! This made me wonder if any one else is this sensitive...
  15. Guess we got a group of weirdo's here! Prior to diagnoses I lost 40 or 50 pounds and after going gluten-free gained back 70 or 80. Always been big but this is too much. Funny thing is my waist is smaller than it was but shirt size is way up.
  16. At our culinary school in Kona gloves are mandatory when working with hands, making sandwiches and plating meals served at the public lunches. They are not mandatory at the stove or oven when working with utensils. The resort hotels are mixed but I've seen gloves used on buffet lines as well as in the back kitchens. In Japan the hotels require color...
  17. Before being diagnosed almost 2 years ago, I could set my clock by the times I had to get up and change my t shirt or put a new towel around my neck. if the cold wet didnt wake me up the sweat smell did. -- After going gluten-free it stopped in 2 days! ken
  18. Wow, that is a weird one. Could it be the brand --perhaps something that thickens the liquid in the can? I'd be lost without them and whole hominy!
  19. When I first got sick I would throw up every morning. Was pretty sure it wasnt morning sickness considering I'm male. Doc told me to have a slice of bread to calm my insides. Took them 6 months to figure it all out. Yeah we do have to eliminate a lot of comfort foods but there are so many new things to try. I never would have had these alternative...
  20. I never had a problem with it until a year after being gluten-free. Doc said it's as much a function of age (56) as anything else. Usually wakes me at night a few times a month and I'll sleep in a lazy boy after that. ken
  21. I pushed them for a gluten-free challenge during season 2 when they filmed the finals here in Hawaii. I was on the last show for all of 6 seconds <G> but the winners meals all featured fruit that I grew for them. Tom's friend is my sons ( also a chef here) boss. . They did say they would consider gluten-free and a food allergy show in the future ...
  22. It just takes time, not only for the healing process but to get used to the cross contamination issues that can cause the pain and discomfort. Other threads on the forum go into how some of us have had to replace all the kitchen utensils, some pots and pans as well as other items. Even tiny amounts can cause us problems if ingested by accident. If others...
  23. Before being diagnosed I dropped 60lbs over 6 months until they figured out it was celiac. Once going totally gluten free and not getting sick after eating I put on 80 lbs in the next year -- Would have rather not gained anything since I was always big. The aches and pains, go away in time but its a good idea to get vitamin and hormone levels checked...
  24. Well if your up near Eagles Mere or Sonnestown PA -- I might think about it ! Beautiful area. No Sams club here but the groceries all do chicken and all of them have soy sauce on them so I just make my own. Our small local markets buy directly from fishermen so although we dont get salmon we do get great daily choices of just off the boat fish. I...
  25. The Kirkland rotissiere chicken is not gluten-free in Hawaii. I think it's probably a good idea for people to check their individual stores.
