Before it was Hollywood, it was Hollywoodland and the area form Vine to Western and Franklin to Sunset was a pineapple orchard. There are some great old photos of it in some of the LA history books at the Gene Autry museum. -

you can get them at any time of year but it depends on the store and if they choose to order them as the cost is more than Cost Rica and Philippines in many locations. Doug MacCluer is ther president of Maui Gold, a really good no acid one. They ship all the time around the mainland. -

As maybe the only pineapple grower on the forum, I can see its worth it to save and buy the whole one and cut it yourself. The nutritional value is considerably more. PLus if you have a juicer you can put the outer skin, eyes and core threw it and you will have the most unbelievably sweet juice you can imagine. Yes the skin which is where much of the sugars... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Sushi?
kenlove replied to ChelseaS's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Living in Hawaii I have plenty of fish but it doesn't help as I went vegan about 5 years ago. Made vegan sushi for thanksgiving last year using mushroom, paper thin carrot slices looked just like salmon and red pepper that looked like maguro. For spicy tune many places in the US use sriracha or sometimes sambal oleek I Japan we used different hot... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Sushi?

some wasabi powder is made with wheat starch. it depends on what type they use. Many places now are getting fresh wasabi which is gluten free. Many places you have to be careful of the nori , the seaweed wrappers. Some made in Korea are processed with soy sauce and dried and you can get very sick from them. The plain fish is all safe and sushi rice safe... -

Blind faith is never good especially when it comes to labels that govern issues about our health. This forum is filled with members who think exactly that, the labels are worth very very little. No one should discount others beliefs one way or another. If you want to put your trust in labels thats fine for you. For the rest of us we look at things differently... -

there are a number of ways to grind your own if you have either the old metal one that scared you ( I have my great grandfathers) or kitchen aid mixer with attachment ( you can make your own sausage with it too) or a champion juicer with attachement. Being vegan I dont make it on my machines at home but I do have to teach a few charcuterie classes... -

Vegan for 5 years without meat but 50% of my time is as a chef, sometimes at the Four Seasons so I have to cook a lot of things. >>Do not rely on the government to do your thinking for you with labeling laws...<< truest thing I've heard in awhile! -

ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Been Glutened By Ground Beef?

I agree completely Scott, There is cut and dry answer. yes pure ground beef is gluten free but unless you see them grind it after pulling the grinder out of a sterilizer, there is no guarantee. As for labeling I can't trust. Small local stores dont follow the same rules as big companies even if they are supposed too. For those of us who have been glutened... -

Germany, Spain, Greek Islands were never a problem for me. France and the Uk I only had salads which not all that good so I usually found a Chinese or greek place. Only changed planes in the Netherlands although my brother lived there for 4 years. Croatia should kbe ok. Never been there but I learned the language and did a story on immigrants in Chicago...

I spend 3 to 5 months overseas and never had a problem, in fact its often easier for me than eating out near my house. You can always find a CHinese or Thai or Greek or INdian place. If your in Italy, its easy too as there are many places rated by their celiac association. Korean is tough as soy sauce is on everything. Chinese and Thai usually i just...
