ARCHIVED Tomato Soup/cream Of Chicken Soup
plantime replied to Mom22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am a stay-at-home mom of two teenagers, so I have time to bake, myself. If I knew of any celiacs in my area, I wouldn't mind baking for them, too. I would even be happy to make my kitchen into a bakery, but my area is small, so it wouldn't be worth the effort to go that far! It is very good that your mom helps you like that. Thank you for brightening... -
ARCHIVED How Do You "break It" To An Older Child?
plantime replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You say that your son values being told the truth, he does not understand lying. That is good. It is also good that you have told him about the test being positive, the need for more tests, and what will happen if they come back positive. I think you are handling it very well. Your son sounds like an intelligent boy, and he will figure it out eventually... -
ARCHIVED Getting Others To Understand Celiac
plantime replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
From reading this thread, I now believe that I am very fortunate! My family is extremely supportive, they all help me read labels. They don't as a rule like my gluten-free foods, but that's ok with me. My GI doc was satisfied that I knew what celiac is, and how to deal with it, so he leaves me alone about it. If I have questions, I don't wait for him... -

As far as I know, Taco Bell is a no-go. Even their chips are made from wheat tortillas. Shame, since I really like Mexican food.

ARCHIVED Mainting A Gf Diet?

I have slip-ups, but I am quite paranoid, so not very often. We all have mistakes, it will get easier as we get used to it. -

ARCHIVED How Gf Should I Be?
plantime replied to hthorvald's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I use Matrix Curl Life Shampoo, Pantene conditioner for normal hair, and step #3 of the Curl Life line. For lotion, I use Suave Skin Therapy Cocoa Butter. If I use anything with wheat in it, my skin breaks out, and I itch horribly. I don't think it will cause any kind of mass hysteria or panic to inform Celiacs that they should be careful of everything... -
If I were at the fair all day, I don't think I would worry about heating anything up. I would pack a cooler with cold-type foods, and eat that.

ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia Or Celiac?
plantime replied to HAPPY DOG SUZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I checked gelatin ingredients, too. One kind is made from hooves, skin, and connective tissue, the other kind is made from seaweed. All I can think of is that maybe he was referring to what Tiffany said about non-stick coatings. Ask your pharmacist to explain. Mine is very good about not giving me something I can't have, and he says gelcaps are just fine... -
ARCHIVED Change In Smell
plantime replied to cdobbs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Being gluten-free could be allowing the body to detoxify. It is possible that your bodies are doing so through the skin. It is something that you really should discuss with your doctor. There could also be an underlying condition that requires additional treatment. Good luck with it, and keep us posted! -
ARCHIVED Finally Facing Facts
plantime replied to dragonkingbc's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is time to stop denying, and start taking charge! For me, the dietary shift was fairly simple. Since I already ate mainly meat and veggies for dinner, I only had to skip the bread for that meal. I made lunch from the previous day's dinner, so that was easy. The problem I had was breakfast and snacks. Cereal, sandwiches, and cookies/cakes were quick... -
I keep coming back to this and reading it over and over. Perhaps I should mention something else about myself that my sister reminded me of: I had rheumatic fever when I was 12. That is when I started exhibiting symptoms of arthritis, and even tested positive for Rheumatoid arthritis. Now, my Rheumatoid tests are negative, but my Osteoarthritis tests...

ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia Or Celiac?
plantime replied to HAPPY DOG SUZ's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
How odd that you should say that! I was never diagnosed with Fibro, but I have had pain and tingling with numbness in only my arms when I lay down, too. I also had "cold streaks" where the numbness was, so I thought something was wrong with my cardiovascular system! My doc told me it was because of the way I was laying, and the surface I was on. I think... -
What I do is cook and freeze. When I make a gluten-free meal for me, I make enough to put some in the freezer. That way, I have a "nuke it" meal for later. It makes cooking easier because I'm not "wasting time and energy" on just one little meal, and I have something for the times when I don't feel like cooking.

ARCHIVED Why The Gluten Challenge?
plantime replied to Pam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I guess I was fortunate that my doctor used a scope to look at my intestinal wall before he took samples. He only took samples for biopsy from areas that were inflamed, he wanted to know why it was that way. I will consider myself one of the lucky few to get a definitive diagnosis without any problems, then! I do feel for anyone that has to go through... -
ARCHIVED Why The Gluten Challenge?
plantime replied to Pam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's how mine came to be diet-diagnosed in Feb. The endoscopy was ordered to look for ulcers, and the doc found damage from celiac instead. No ulcers, just celiac, which did not cause the problem I was having to begin with! That is why I wonder if the gluten challenge is needed, since an endoscopy and biopsy are being ordered. If it were blood testing... -
Thanks for the help! This topic was a very timely one for me! I will see if my whole foods store has that herb, maybe it will help me. I prefer to keep control by modifying my diet, but sometimes I need help!

ARCHIVED Here Come The Tests...
plantime replied to christtheking's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From your list of tests, I'd say your doc is looking for more than celiac disease. Test #4 indicates to me that he is also looking for gall stones. I don't know what the stool test will show him, unless he is checking for blood. If you can get through to your doc, ask him if he is running Enterolabs stool test. It would be interesting to find out if he... -
I have problems getting to sleep and staying asleep. My doc put me on Lexapro. It works, I get deeper sleep, but I find that I am drowsy all the time. I only sleep for 6 hours, then I am wide awake for 6 hours, then I need to sleep for a few more hours, and so the cycle goes. Fortunately, I am a stay-home mom, so I can take that nap during the day. I...

ARCHIVED Why The Gluten Challenge?
plantime replied to Pam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is eating the gluten really necessary? If you have only been gluten-free for 8 weeks, was there enough healing for a negative biopsy? I ask this because I went gluten-free Feb 14, and had a biopsy Sep 15. The damage was significant enough that it still showed. Can't he just do a biopsy now, instead of waiting 4 weeks? -
No, I haven't cut carbs. I mostly switched from eating candy and ice cream every day to eating fruits and veggies for snacks, cutting all of the fat off my meat, and using just a little butter instead of a lot. I know that fruit affects blood sugars and such, but do vegetables, too? I did cut out most of the breads and pastas because of celiac, I only...
