ARCHIVED Crackers
plantime replied to LynnR's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What grocery stores are you people shopping at? None of the ones I have access to have gluten free specialty type products. I would really appreciate knowing where to shop at! -
ARCHIVED What Were Your First Symptoms
plantime replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Looking back, my first symptom was constipation. Then I would get anemic. I never did get any of the classic symptoms. I found out about celiac when I was researching causes for my mom's death. Her colon had ruptured in three places, and I wanted to know why. Her docs said it was allergies, stress, and smoking. When I looked into intestinal problems... -
I'm the only celiac in my family. Yes, it is hard watching my family eat all of the cookies and cakes that I use to love eating. I am getting to where it doesn't bother me, though. I have a shelf in my cabinet that is just for my food, and I keep snacks there that I enjoy. I have taught my family about celiac, even my teenagers. They have been wonderful...

ARCHIVED What If They Won't Eat?
plantime replied to kentsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hhmm. When I was a child, it was quite simple. I ate what was prepared, or I got nothing until the next meal. Instead of spoiling him by giving in to his demands, try that. Leave the food available, like in the fridge, but don't fix him anything different. I guess what I am saying is Who is the parent, you or him? Who knows what is best for him, you... -
I get them, and they itch and hurt horribly! Mine always come with a severe allergic reaction to something, so it is not just celiac-triggered. I have to wash my hair every day until the breakout subsides to get relief. Nothing I have tried prevents it.

I have Celiac and was on Weight Watchers. It was the only plan that let me adjust the food to my needs. It is a very good one for Celiacs that need to lose weight.

ARCHIVED Is This A Coincidence, Doctor?!
plantime replied to Mballerina's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, I had a doctor that told me all of the stuff I read is nonsense and untrue. Now I have a doctor that is glad I take responsibility for my health and research things. Amazing what changing doctors can do! -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Dinner Again
plantime replied to whitelacegal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In my family, everyone takes turn hosting the Thanksgiving dinner. Every time my turn has come up, my mother had a different excuse for why everyone was going to her house. One time, my house was too small, the next: "no one" would ever drive 45 miles just for a dinner. When my mom did her thing, my family just stayed home and had our dinner. We have... -
I agree with Mariann: I will just have to start taking my own little container with me for leftovers! By doing that, I also will not be filling another landfill with anything!

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Question
plantime replied to lauriel234's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Bridget, that is a good point. However, my concern would be the basting done while it is cooking, as bits of the stuffing would have dissolved into the juices. Also, All of the stuffed birds I have seen had extra stuffing packed around the ouotside of the bird, too. I am allergic to poultry and stuffing herbs, so this is not an issue for me. I make a... -
ARCHIVED Candy ?
plantime replied to eternity's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Don't the nutrageous bars have a cookie or wafer in the middle? If they do, then they are a definite "no-no." I really don't know, but they should have a label with the ingredients on them. Although some candy comes in great big bags, so the ingredients are not listed on each individual item! -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Best Gf Food Item You Have Found?
plantime replied to Mom22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
EnerG crackers, also made with corn starch and soy flour. These taste like saltines, and are yummy with blackberry jam on them! -

ARCHIVED Trace Amounts Of Gluten Acceptable
plantime replied to MichelleC's topic in Publications & Publicity
And avoiding all grain products is a problem because??? I am allergic to most grains, and have no problems with meat and veggies for meals. 0ppm is a goal worth achieving. -
ARCHIVED Taco Bell? Are The Corn Tortillas Safe?
plantime replied to nailehead's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
What corn tortillas? At my local Taco Bell, the tortillas are all made of flour. -
ARCHIVED Is There Anyone Like Me? (sorry If I'm Redundant)
plantime replied to aaascr's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I use ground flax instead of eggs in my baking; you could probably use water instead of milk, or try Rice Dream; I just plain avoid everything else I'm allergic to. It makes life much easier than trying to substitute. -
Do you need the test results to feel better about going gluten-free? If you do, then see the gi doc. If you don't, then why waste your money and time?

"Who can eat fast food without fries?" Me. I don't like the contamination. I learned to eat burgers with no buns, going without fries and onion rings is very easy. As for Burger King's low-carb platters, I refuse to pay $4.29 for a $2.19 burger, just to have them hold the bun off. How dare they penalize me because I have a disease!

ARCHIVED School Harrassing 17 Year Old Celiac
plantime replied to debimashni's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Definitely go to the superintendent. The school staff are being ignorant, and the way they are treating your son is illegal. If you have to, pay a lawyer to speak to the school board about this. Talk to the school board yourself. Take them copies of your son's med reports, and explain to each one individually what is going on. Talk to your doctor, see... -
ARCHIVED Does It Ever Feel Like Too Much?
plantime replied to beelzebubble's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you, Tiffany! I will keep looking until I find them! Maybe if I ask at my favorite whole foods store, they could order some in. My husband asked me when I was going to my store again, and would I please go on his day off, he would like to see my store. It makes it easier to handle, knowing that my hubby isn't mad at me for driving 40 miles one way... -
ARCHIVED Why Can't It Just Be Treated With A Pill?
plantime replied to melisano's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Perhaps we even live better and healthier because we do not eat all of the overprocessed foods. It is not that hard to eat gluten-free, it is not wanting to give up the conveniences of eating wheat that is hard. Let's face it, bread makes a great disposable plate. Put hamburger and a salad on it, and call it a meal. After everything I have been through... -
Do you have some brand names for us? If I go into the store and ask for natural charcoal, will they look at me like I just escaped from the sanitarium? Will they get out the overripe produce just in case I turn out to be a comedienne? Does it burn like Kingsford? Or will I have to listen to my husband rant and rave while he's pouring a can of lighter...

ARCHIVED Does It Ever Feel Like Too Much?
plantime replied to beelzebubble's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Food isn't my only issue. When I was 12, I was diagnosed via blood test and xrays with Rheumatoid arthritis. Now I am 40, and the Rheumatoid factor was not in my blood, but the osteoarthritis factor was. It leads me to believe that I have both, since I do have symptoms of both. My doctor says no, it is impossible to have both. Is it really? The treatments... -
ARCHIVED Does It Ever Feel Like Too Much?
plantime replied to beelzebubble's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I needed this today, too. I get hurt when my "friends" make Sunday dinner dates at Pizza Hut, then tell me that I'm not being sociable when I don't go. I get angry when I read the soup labels in the grocery store, they have chicken, wheat, or rice in them, none of which I can have. I struggle to eat my burger wrapped in wax paper while whoever I'm having... -
Rolls, stuffing, and pies are the only things not gluten-free at my Thanksgiving table, so I just don't eat them. Due to allergies, the rolls are the only thing that I have eaten before that I cannot have now. My family is good about it, they are careful not to cross-contaminate me. I don't think they like listening to me complain about not feeling very...
