ARCHIVED Lost Weight?
super-sally888 replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, how is your energy level? At your current height your weight is probably ok, but you don;t want to lose much more and it sure is scarey to lose so fast. Have you estimated your daily calories? Are you eating enough? Someone your height and weight should be eating about 2400 calories a day to maintain (and maybe more considering you work out)... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Test Results Back
super-sally888 replied to super-sally888's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Loraleena. Thanks for your reply. I live in Philippines (though I am australian). THe only drug available here is T4. T3 and armor are not available. I got my supply of armor last time I was in Australia - that is why I have had to increase by adding T4 instead of by adding more armor. I have not had testing for thyroid antibodies. When I asked... -
Hi All, Tried to go see my endo dr today. Was told he no longer works at the health clinic I usually go to. So now I have no doctor. Got to try find a new one I guess... that is going to be a drag.... I increased my thryoid meds 2 1/2 months ago (mixing armor and thyroxine). My latest test results are TSH - 0.039 (range 0.27-4.2), FT3 - 5.0...

ARCHIVED Do You Eat Out? - Poll!
super-sally888 replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Eating out is a major part of my (single) active lifestyle. I usually only sleep at home and vegetables tend to rot in my fridge. I still eat out, but am trying to find foods that don't make me have problems (gluten free seems to be manageable, but think I am having other food allergy/intollerance that is making things very challenging particularly... -
ARCHIVED Double Scope Next Wk Lots Of Biopsies
super-sally888 replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, if I remember right from Physiology, the gut (stomach, etc) doesn't have pain receptors. The pain or sensations that we feel come from stretching / movement. I also had no pain from biopsies (I did mine with no anaesthetic (for top and bottom)) and although i could feel them taking the biopsies (a little tugging sensation), there was no pain associated... -
ARCHIVED Cycling Season Is Starting Up...
super-sally888 replied to mkh's topic in Sports and Fitness
Hi, I try to eat a lot before I start - bananas and peanut butter are good for me (actually I eat bananas & plantains as a key carb source now that I don't eat any grains).... nuts, hardboiled eggs. I use crank e-gel. That stuff is fabulous for energy boosts (I did a whole IM last Feb just using e-gel and a few squares of chocolate nougat, oh... -
Hi - candida is thrush right? I have oral thrush now I guess as a side effect of the inhaled asthma steriods I am taking. It is not really bad, just isolated to one side of my tongue (disgusting looking white stuff), but my mouth does feel a bit sensitive... IF it is there, can I assume it is also a systemic problem? Definitely don't want more drugs...

ARCHIVED Having A Scary Episode Of Vertigo
super-sally888 replied to mesmerize's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, If you are not feeling better yet, maybe go see a dr. and get checked for ear infection... this would be the most likely cause of suddenly getting vertigo... it is possible to have ear infection without pain. Let us know how you go. Sally -
ARCHIVED B12 Shots
super-sally888 replied to nama shivaya's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I have been researching about B12. Seems that in europe they use the sublingual as SOP. And as long as the dose is high enough (because only about 2% of what is taken will be absorbed) that will be effective. I think we only need a few micrograms of B12 each day. B12 orally is thought to be very safe. It is water soluble - so just drink lots of... -
ARCHIVED Celiac/positive H. Pylori Antigen
super-sally888 replied to lablady's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, were you tested for H. Pyelori? If you were and found positive, I assume that they would be treating you with antibiotics to eradicate it. I don't know if there is a link between celiac and H.pyelori. However, a traumatic experience can be a trigger for celiac (surgery could do it). What are your symptoms? Why are you suspecting celiac? If... -
Hi, How frustrating to be gaining weight like that! First thing I would recommend is making sure that your thryoid meds are ok. Do they measure more than just TSH? I know for me, my TSH can be very low normal, but my FT3 and FT4 are still way too low. What is your target TSH? Target at top of the range may be inadequate for replacment thyroid hormone...

Hi, Soy can be allergenic for some people. It also has major effects on thyroid function for sensitive people (this would possibly explain the depression, racing heart, etc). You can read up on soy on the Weston A Price website (just type that into your browser). If you are going to try soy again, stick to the unprocessed traditional foods (like tofu...

ARCHIVED Embarrassing. . . Gas
super-sally888 replied to Anna Isabel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, If you are eating legumes or grains (dried) you could try soaking them overnight before cooking and eating, this would make them more digestable. I think there is info about this on the weston a price website. DId anything else change? Brand of what you are eating. DId you take antibiotics or something that could have upset your system? If this... -
ARCHIVED Intolerance Or Allergy?
super-sally888 replied to elye's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Immune system very complex. The classic allergy is the IGE mediated one (itching, sneezing, hives, etc). This is the histamine one. Then there is also IGG, IGA (would have to read up to explain, maybe later) - which can result in a delayed reactions. Maybe someone more knowledgeable could give some more info. Regardless if is allergy or intollerance... -
ARCHIVED I Never Show Symptoms Of Being Glutened
super-sally888 replied to beaglemania's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Yes, it is hard without clear symptoms... me too. Once I cut out gluten, the chronic C & D stopped and GI symptoms stopped (so it was pretty clear that gluten was a factor). However, now if I have a little gluten there is no major reaction.... (so far that I can tell, though have some other food problems to get sorted out)... so hard to... -
ARCHIVED 17 Years Of Misery
super-sally888 replied to cat40's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, welcome. Please get a good and comprehensive checkup. They should also test iron levels, vit b levels, bone density, (among others). Plus you need a good baseline and you also need to know if there is anything else going on that could be treated. Whether celiac testing comes up positive or negative doesn't really matter, you KNOW, from your elimination... -
ARCHIVED I Suspect My Son Has Celiac
super-sally888 replied to russtay1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you tried giving him information. Ask him to read it and then discuss it with him, in relation to his symptoms. If he still thinks its not relevant to him, then he is not going to stick with the diet, whatever you say. Maybe he needs to feel he is the one making this decision. If he decides not to, then at least he has read all the info and can... -
ARCHIVED Cramping
super-sally888 replied to kittyme's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, is your daughter complaining of tummy pain at any time other than during the night? Have her toilet habits become ok - no D or C? If she has pain other times or toilet not normal maybe there is still something in her diet to be looked at. If not, maybe it is becoming a habit. Hope you work this out. Sally -
ARCHIVED Fasting
super-sally888 posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Am reading up on elimination diets. Fasting often comes up as a means of cleansing/purifying the body (from a health perspective as well as a religious perspective). I am wondering if anyone has tried this? Am thinking about trying it for a short time (maybe 1-2 days just purified water, then use just juice for a few days, and then get into an... -
Hi, Had skin testing today (IGE mediated allergies). Their testing is tailored for the local diet. Turns out I am extremely allergic to dust mites (I knew that) - the reaction to dust mites was greater than the reaction to the histamine. Turns out I had a reaction to mango, rice, chicken, tilapia (a type of local fish), bagoong (a type of common...

ARCHIVED Getting Back On The Wagon
super-sally888 posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Stupid me... a beer or two with new friends while on holiday (how could I say no when they presented it to me - they are not my usual friends who know and assist, and thought surely one beer can't hurt!) and then it all comes undone, and a cracker or three later, next thing I know I am eating a whole packet of biscuits.... Unfortunately for me I don't... -
ARCHIVED Weird Stomach Discomfort Question
super-sally888 replied to GraceE's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Had similar symptoms. Improved dramatically with gluten free. No testing. However, my sister has very clear symptoms and came back negative. So it is possible to have negative results and still be "gluten intollerant". Try removing gluten from your diet and see what happens. -
Hi, Some more stuff on soy, I got from various sites. Use of soy products in moderation should be fine, as long as you are not sensitive to it. (Moderators - is it ok to post this sort of info? Sorry if it's not - Please just delete the post). S Soy isoflavones (plant estrogens), should be limited to the 35-45 mg per day beyond which they have...

Hi, Soy sauce is usually out because it is made with wheat (as well as soy). There are some wheat free brands available - maybe some of the others here can recommend (none available in my part of the world). Soy is not a problem, unless you are also sensitive to it. However, the health benefits of soy are currently under review so don't go overboard...

ARCHIVED Coconut Milk
super-sally888 replied to simplicity66's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi, for the coconut oil, make sure you get the virgin stuff. This gets cloudy/solid at lower temperatures. It also has a coconut flavour. Fabulous for making pancakes, banana fritters, etc (gluten free, of course ) bleached deoderised is also available, is much cheaper, but won't have the health benefits. S
