I got a lovely recipe from a Canadian friend for some potatoes that bake in the oven. I decided to simplify this a bit and try it in the crockpot so it wouldn't heat up my kitchen. Simply slice 4 Yukon Gold potatoes into 1/4" slices. I left the peel on. Slice one large white onion in similar slices, cutting the slices into quarters for easier eatability...

I got this recipe from a fellow diabetic a few years back and I make it every year for the 4th of July. She does hers in a Dutch Oven but I find it works well in the crockpot. It can cook for up to 24 hours and it is just wonderful. Since there are no set measurements and everything is pretty much done to taste, it never seems to come out the same way...

ARCHIVED Cold Pasta Salad
Juliebove replied to Chrissyb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I haven't had much luck making pasta salad with gluten-free pasta. When I do make it, I try to make just enough for that meal and eat it right away. With wheat pasta I would make it the day before and allow it to sit overnight for the flavors to blend. This doesn't seem to work with the gluten-free pasta and as a result, I think the salad doesn't taste... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Flour In Ice Cream!?!?!
Juliebove replied to HAK1031's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow. We don't eat ice cream because of dairy allergies. But it always surprises me when I find something like that in a food where you wouldn't expect it. -
I suppose that would depend on where it came from. I have seen some from places like Redi-Pac (sp?) that would probably be safe. I think they only do fruit and vegetable trays. Or maybe only vegetable trays. If it is done up at a store, it might be made alongside sandwich platters. Could you find out where it came from? If from a store, you could call...

ARCHIVED Super Easy Nacho Idea
Juliebove replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make them with rice cheese. I put down a layer of chips, then top with blobs of canned refried beans and rice chips broken into little pieces. I nuke this until the cheese is melted. Then I add chopped tomatoes, onions or green onions, black olives and plenty of fresh salsa. Yum! -

Could be a dairy allergy. You could try Enjoy Life chocolate chips. -
ARCHIVED Banana Allergy?
Juliebove replied to B'sgirl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is allergic to bananas, but I don't know what her symptoms are. -
Why do you need to use the mix? Are you baking something? This sounds dangerous to me. If you are not breathing it in, then you are going to maybe get it on your skin or at least into your kitchen where you don't want it. I got rid of all things containing wheat flour. It's just not worth the risk.

My daughter likes it and also the Rice Starch bread. -
ARCHIVED Marie Callender's Restaurant
Juliebove replied to RebeccaF's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I haven't eaten there since we lived in CA. What annoyed me was that I asked for a side dish of veggies for my daughter and the waitress wasn't going to let me have it. Then she finally said she would have to charge me $6 for it? I was like... Why? None of the kid's meals came with vegetables and my daughter was only a toddler then. I didn't want to... -
Daughter and I went a few years ago. We just brought some food, got there early and ate it outside. We were street teaming for one of the bands so we had to be out there anyway. We did have some popcorn that we bought at Intermission.

ARCHIVED Question About Cereal....
Juliebove replied to AustinsMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think Kix are gluten-free. There are posts here that *some* Berry Berry Kix do not contain any gluten containing ingredients (you'd have to read the box) but the manufacturer does not say they are gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Cannot Control My Cheating...please Help.
Juliebove replied to LadyCyclist87's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
First of all, I don't have celiac but food allergies. I had them most of my life but didn't make the connection of my symptoms to the allergies because the reaction wasn't immediate. And it took about two weeks to get all of the stuff out of my system. Now, just a speck of the offending food gives me all sorts of symptoms. So for me, there is no "cheating... -
I generally don't have cravings. If I do, there's usually a reason for it. For example, some weeks ago, I craved tomatoes and parsley. The nurse thought I was lacking in potassium and magnesium and told me to eat these very things. I can eat refried beans pretty much any time. Those always sound good. And lately I've been eating Ian's chicken nuggets...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried With gluten-free Chex Cereal
Juliebove replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Daughter loves it and we used it to make some Monkey Munch. -
I have bought some pork and beans that were safe, but offhand I can't remember the brand. I do generally buy organic beans though. We have additional food allergies, so Enjoy Life are the only ones we use.

ARCHIVED Makeup Counters In The Mall - Good Brands?
Juliebove replied to munchkinette's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I recently won a large amount of MAC makeup and cosmetics. I like their lip gloss, eyedshadow, liner and nail polish. There were allergens in some of their other things though, so I gave those away. I do not have an issue with wheat/gluten, but daughter does and there was some in some of the makeup. The lip conditioner had almond and I'm allergic. And... -
I like really quick things that require no cooking at all or only the use of the microwave. Like hotdogs, Ian's chicken nuggets, ham steak or precooked smoked pork chops and canned beans. Salads of all kinds. 1/2 a melon hollowed out and filled with cottage cheese or ice cream, sorbet or yogurt and all kinds of berries. An apple hollowed out and filled...

ARCHIVED In Tears Preparing Meals For My Gluten Free Family
Juliebove replied to lailabean's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know this is an old post, but I am going through something similar. My husband is not on a gluten-free diet, although most of our food is gluten-free because of daughter's allergies. He is however, taking a med that changes the way food tastes. He knows this, yet he is always accusing me of doing something to his food. It seems the only things that... -
Riuce Dream is not gluten free. Makes my daughter very ill.

I thought Kingsford was the one that contained gluten? Never mind. Just did a search and found that it used to contain gluten but now does not. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Problems With Low Blood Pressure?
Juliebove replied to Nan2N's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had this for a while. Partly due to my high dose of BP meds for my kidneys and partly food allergies. I am allergic to dairy. Twice I ordered something and asked for no cheese. I found a shred of cheese in the food as I was eating it. Although I believe I didn't actually ingest any cheese, I must have because not long after, I had the rapid drop in... -
I guess I am lucky. My health food store gets most of what I need. I can get some other things at the local grocery stores and I don't mind and don't have a problem with the prices I pay online. We really have no choice given all of our food allergies. I do find I save some money by shopping at Costco. I can get meat, fruit and vegetables there. I...
