ARCHIVED Grilled Apple Slices
Juliebove replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I used to fry apple slices like this. I'd cut them with the peel still on, fry in butter, and then after they were browned, I'd add a bit of brown sugar and cinnamon. Yum! Can't do butter now so not sure how they'd be without it. I could use coconut oil I guess. -
ARCHIVED Hahaha! I Just Did It Again!
Juliebove replied to mysecretcurse's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have learned the hard way I have to read every label, every time. I've forgotten a few times and now my daughter reminds me. She has more allergies than I do. -
ARCHIVED Soy-free Product And Ingredient Recommendations Please.
Juliebove replied to missy'smom's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I don't know of any prepared soy free soy sauces. Somebody gave me this recipe, but I haven't tried it. Soy Sauce Substitute 1 1/2 cups boiling water 3 tbsp. beef bouillon pinch pepper 1 tbsp. dark molasses 4 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. cider... -
It could also be a gluten allergy. My daughter has that. The school thought she had ADHD, but after removing the gluten and other allergies from her diet it was like I got a different girl!

ARCHIVED Bw3's - Gluten Free Or Close?
Juliebove replied to Eric-C's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's possible that they make it with cornstarch, but that cornstarch might not be gluten free. I don't really use a lot of cornstarch, but I have read that some brands are not gluten free. There is also the chance that some wheat flour got into the cornstarch, either from someone dipping a measuring cup or spoon in there that was contaminated, or simply... -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption - Help Needed
Juliebove replied to shimo's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I thought I had a problem with fructose but then someone who knows more than me about nutrition surmised that it might in fact be sorbitol I have a problem with. And in fact I can not eat any foods sweetened with sorbitol because it makes me quite ill. I have never been a big fruit eater. But I used to like cantaloupe and would sometimes have 1/2 of... -
ARCHIVED Best Websites To Purchase Food That's Hard To Find In Stores
Juliebove replied to Dolcenotte's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This one is good! But honestly I have not found one website where I can get all that I need. I always wind up ordering from several. -
ARCHIVED Withdrawal Symptoms Off Dairy - Anxiety?
Juliebove replied to CuriousOne's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I didn't feel any different at first when I stopped my allergens. I don't have celicac. Just allergies. Then at about the 2 week mark, I think the detox set it. I felt really bad and took to bed. Then I felt a LOT better. Daughter was about the same. Hers are allergies too. -
ARCHIVED Glutened By A Pair Of Throw-away Gloves! (vent)
Juliebove replied to Sailing Girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Aha! That could explain the weird rash my daughter had when she came from the dentist the last time. -
ARCHIVED Friend's Sister
Juliebove replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If her diabetes is not under control, that's going to make her crave carbs, and possibly sweets. You say they sayt she won't give up sweets. Well, if she won't do that she will NEVER get her diabetes under control. And unfortunately if she is bipolar and won't take her meds, it's not likely she will do what she is supposed to. People who won't take their... -
ARCHIVED Brown Rice Syrup

It has barely malt. Open Original Shared Link -
Might depend on the hospital. When I had my baby, I requested vegetarian meals and I never got them. Breakfast was the only meal where they gave me a choice of things. Even though I never requested coffee, milk, juice and sugar, I got them every morning, along with the eggs and toast I also didn't request. When my husband was recently in the hospital...

Yep. The dietician I just saw kept recommending all these lactose free things that still have milk in them. I have a milk allergy.

I have used it for some things, but I don't think it would work for food intolerances.

ARCHIVED Lunch Ideas
Juliebove replied to Lorna Doone's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter likes these: Open Original Shared Link Not all of them are gluten free so you have to be careful. She also likes Hormel chili and tamales, Beanie Weenies, Shelton's chicken and wild rice soup, garlic chiken in a pouch (Bumblebee), served with some pre-cooked brown rice from Trader Joe's or leftover rice that I've cooked. I have to send... -
I've gotten similar. When hearing of my food allergies, people would say stuff like, "I would just die!" Or, "If I couldn't eat that, I would just KILL myself!" To which I love to reply, "Wow! Sucks to be you!" And the thing is... I used to think that way too. But when I realized how much better I felt by stopping the eating of those allergens, there...

ARCHIVED Lunchbox Ideas
Juliebove replied to chasing4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter usually takes her thermos a few times a week. Today she had some Shelton's turkey chili in it. She also likes Shelton's chicken and wild rice soup and some tomato soup (either Imagine or Pacific, whichever one is dairy free). I often plan to have some leftovers for her lunch. Like pasta or rice dishes. One quick meal is a pouch of garlic... -
ARCHIVED Look Out For Barley Flour!
Juliebove replied to 1965kid's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just noticed it last night being used in cookies. I was looking up allergen free cookies and they were made with barley flour. I couldn't believe it! -
At two different restaurants, I asked if the pork chops were breaded or plain. I was told plain. They arrived breaded. In once case I was told it was just flour. Pork chops always have flour. Right? The next time I was told it was some sort of grill seasoning! Gah! What did they think breaded meant? The lady at the health food store (and some other...

ARCHIVED Tic Tac
Juliebove replied to KAG's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Somebody in the past posted that Tic Tacs were not gluten-free but when I asked which ingredient was the culprit, they never responded. I see nothing that looks like gluten and I don't think they contain sorbitol. My daughter eats the fruit flavored ones with no problems. -
ARCHIVED Help! Need Alergy Free Recipes
Juliebove replied to Katydid's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The products themselves might not contain the allergens, but if it's a mix, they sometimes require the allergen to bake it. I wish they would list the added ingredients needed on all of the products. They do on some, but not all. -
ARCHIVED Egg Allergy Thread
Juliebove replied to huevo-no-bueno's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I bake very little. Not much seems to come out well when you have to leave the egg out. I do make the zucchini bread (recipe on this site) and use ground flax instead of egg. That does come out really well. Luckily we have the Flying Apron bakery here so I can get cupcakes and pastries for my daughter that are really good. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Order At Restaurants?
Juliebove replied to FlyGirl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
In a restaurant, we get a plain hamburger patty or chopped sirloin. Sometimes a steak, if we can be sure they are made without butter. Sometimes chicken or pork chop if plain. The chili is often safe. Plain baked potato. Fruit. For breakfast, home fries are usually safe. We have an egg allergy so that lets those out. Ham is usually out. And we...
