  1. We're going out for Mexican tonight. Luckily we have a restaurant here that caters to people with food allergies. Tomorrow we will be having hamburgers with assorted toppings and potato chips. The next night will be beef au jus with rice noodles mixed in. Not sure what the veggie will be but probably green or wax beans since those are my daughter...
  2. I try to avoid eating in the car if at all possible. If not, I try to limit what can be eaten to stuff like Fruit Rollups or other fruit snacks, some mini marshmallows, baby carrots, celery or maybe a slice of rice cheese. I do not allow anything that would make crumbs. Yes, these things can be messy, but it is easier to pick up a carrot than a bunch of...
  3. My daughter is 9 so she needs less help from me than she used to. If she needs to have her food cut up, I cut it up first. Actually now that I think about it, my food tends to be gluten free as well. I am allergic to eggs and dairy and that pretty much lets out most bread products. There is one place that makes its bread from scatch and it is safe...
  4. Shelton's Chicken and Wild Rice soup is gluten free. We have additional food allergies, so it's the only one we can eat. I always keep a few cans of that onhand just in case.
  5. I agree with the flax.
  6. I just got the Coconut Bliss tonight. Got the Cherry Amaretto (I couldn't try it because I'm allergic to almonds), and the Dark Chocolate. I tried the chocolate and it is out of this world! Daughter loved it too but was not thrilled with the cherry because of the cherry bits. Husband liked it though.
  7. It takes me about that long to buy groceries, unless I am just buying a few things. We have additional food allergies so I do have to read every label every time. Every time I just grab something, remembering that it was safe the time before, it seems they change something and it's no longer safe. So now I just do read the label every time. I do also...
  8. I have not had a lot of luck with my bread machine and the different kinds have different settings and such. Perhaps if you could tell us specifically which one you have, someone with that kind can be of more help to you. I do know that gluten-free bread can not take a second rise. So use whatever setting you have that doesn't do the second rise. That...
  9. My daughter was 6 and we really didn't have many problems at all. She is good to try new foods. The only real problem was the bread. I kept trying to make it and I couldn't get two loaves ever to come out the same. She'd find one bread she liked and either I could recreate it or I couldn't find it again in the store. Or if I did find it, it was bad....
  10. Rice Crispies are not gluten-free. I was pretty sure Skittles were. Daughter eats them all the time. Not sure about the Cadbury. We're allergic to other ingredients in most chocolates. I think (but am not sure) the Jelly Beans you bought are subject to CC. As for gluten-free Jelly Beans, we get the Starburst or the Jolly Rancher.
  11. I have one but I don't use it for much. I tried it for salsa and had a mushy mess. Mainly I use it to grind flax seeds or make the occasional smoothie for my daughter.
  12. Wow! That's bad.
  13. That's the only way I can eat my salad too. I might put a little salsa or pico de gallo on it, but to me, dressing just ruins it.
  14. I know what you mean. This year my daughter has a teacher who is diabetic and there is another diabetic in the class. So I was hoping there would be less food stuff. But not really. They have rootbeer float parties and pizza parties. Worse yet are the all day parties they have this year. They get them for good behavior. They can bring in video...
  15. We just went to La Palmera last night. We don't usually have problems but we did have to send the dip back last night because they put cheese in it. We can't have cheese. After saying "no cheese" on everything we ordered, you'd think they would have gotten it right. They were very busy last night though and seemed very rushed.
  16. My daughter has a ton of allergies so I know how tough it can be. You can always have rice and rice pasta. There are rice tortillas. You can have sweet potato fries. I have several allergy cookbooks and I am lucky if I can find one or two recipes per book that I can make without having to do a lot of substitutions. For us, baking is the hardest. Tonight...
  17. I have bought two different kinds of faux rye bread. One was very good the first time I tried it. After that, I could not get a loaf to bake right. Remained wet inside. I didn't try the other one because it had milk in it and we're allergic to milk.
  18. Just a thought, but... Did you buy a new toaster so that the toaster would be free of gluten? If you were using the same toaster as you always did, you could have glutened yourself from it.
  19. I must be the odd one. I never get car sick when I am in the back seat or the one driving. But I can in the front seat, depending on who is driving. For me I think it is partly anxiety. I tend to do the worst on roads like the freeway where we are going pretty fast. I get nauseaus if the driver goes over 65. Something in my stomach just goes off and...
  20. I think they sell it here on this site.
  21. It's not gluten-free and not safe for celiacs. However if you have a gluten allergy, you might be able to eat it. My daughter can not. I do know of a few people with gluten allergies who say spelt doesn't make them sick. But it doubles my daughter over in pain.
  22. I take my daughter there occasionally. The only real safe thing for her to eat there is the salad bar and the cotton candy. The salad bar doesn't thrill her too much. So we often eat before we go there.
  23. I use that too. Wonderful stuff. For cooking/baking, I will usually use coconut oil or sometimes Spectrum shortening and a bit of imitation butter extract. The Smart Squeeze isn't sold everywhere. Here it is only sold at QFC.
  24. The problem with a salad bar is people can take the spoons, tongs or other serving pieces and put them in whatever container they want. I have seen people do this. So you don't know what has been cross contaminated. Also, you don't know what has happened to that food in the back room. When I see them fill the salad bar, they always take the food from...
