I found this recipe in "The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet." I've made it a number of times and it is yummy -- creamy with no fat. You can adjust it to whatever veggies you have around. If you keep Arborio rice and vegetable stock on hand, you will have a simple recipe for dinner you can always make. (I suppose you meateaters can experiment with other additions...

I'm so irked. We were talking about calcium supplements on another thread and so I looked at mine, which I had started using some months ago because it said it was free of everything I need to be free of. It is still shown that way on the company's web site. However, now the label on the bottle I have said that it has soy lecithin in the glaze. Looks...

ARCHIVED Nutrition Text Book Fails To Mention Celiac Or The gluten-free Diet!
hathor replied to a topic in Publications & Publicity
Absolutely amazing. What is the copyright date of the text? Your idea is a good one. I also think either you or the professor needs to write to the publisher and/or the authors, so that the next edition of the book won't contain this rather glaring flaw. -
ARCHIVED Calcium Substitutes?
hathor replied to Sprue that :)'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Looking on their web site, it does say that. However, the web site says the same thing for the Calcium + product I have been using, but the label NOW for the latter product has been changed to say that the glaze contains soy. I never noticed a change in the product itself (and the web site, as I said, still shows the old label information saying it is soy... -
I'm afraid my worst glutening wasn't funny. It happened too recently for that. I went to Maggiano's, known for their availability of gluten-free pasta. I tell the waiter I want a gluten-free meal, plus I have other food allergies (not technically, but the word "allergy" gets their attention better ). I talk to the chef and he later brings out my...

ARCHIVED Calcium Substitutes?
hathor replied to Sprue that :)'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ack! I just checked my Rainbow Light Calcium + bottle and they've changed the label since the first time I bought it. It originally said it was soy free. Now it says it has soy lecithin in the glaze. Great -- maybe that is why my night sweats have come back, after I thought I had them under control. I had tried another Rainbow Light product as I... -
Others have given some excellent advice, so I won't repeat what they've said. But I will address your concern about protein. I think we as a culture have this obsession with protein. But actually people usually get way more than they need. (Current RDA is based on study results, multiplied by 2 and a margin added, yielding 44 grams for women and 56...

Oh, yeah, now I remember Parma being mentioned before. Unfortunately, I can't have yeast either I guess I didn't want to remember something good I couldn't eat

ARCHIVED Calcium Substitutes?
hathor replied to Sprue that :)'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
tarnalberry, What is the name of the Rainbow Light supplement you take? How do you know it is soyfree -- does it say so on the label? I tried a Rainbow Light product once and it turned out to have soy (and the label didn't mention soy). I am using a different Rainbow Light supplement now that mentions not having soy, but it has twice as much... -
Just a head's up -- the cheddar block contains casein.

Just piping up to say I have the same symptoms with soy. (I don't have a problem with corn, but I can't have dairy or eggs -- I guess it balances out ) I also found that my sensitivity to soy increased as it was eliminated from my diet. I never even noticed a problem with it to begin with; the Enterolab result surprised me. But I cut out soy (except...

Hmm, I thought they had found the purpose of tonsils a while back Anyway, I found it interesting that they only mention how disease can purge the good bacteria and nothing about antibiotics. Thanks for posting. -
My experience was not so great (with Amadeus). The waiters & the kitchen seemed unable to understand what was in the food they were serving. I was frequently advised to order food I knew I couldn't eat -- and they looked at me like I was being difficult when I told them. It was particularly bad for those of us on board (6 celiac/intolerants on...

ARCHIVED Eureka! I Found The Perfect Bread Mix!
hathor replied to jerseygrl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just so people know -- this mix "may contain traces of milk" and lists egg white as an ingredient. Sigh -
Others have answered the question. Apparently it does. I haven't tried doing that yet. As I said before, this is not a product where you want the cheese to come through. Definitely not a product to eat by itself. I found it fine on a sturdy bread with some lettuce & tomato. Also the more times I ate it the more I liked it. My initial distaste...

I have inadvertently glutened myself by not checking ingredients, and then doublechecking with ingredients like natural and artificial flavors. I guess I've been a little slow on internalizing the idea that this stuff can be ANYWHERE. The stupidest thing I did was ordering a dish with soba noodles in a restaurant and not ask if they were 100% buckwheat...

ARCHIVED Tough One- 43 Licor? Safe?
hathor replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It seems like you will have to contact them and ask. (Or tell me the web site and I'll figure out how to ask ...) I love this stuff. I never thought about it NOT being safe. So, for what it's worth, I haven't reacted. I just tried googling the subject but can't find any information, other than the fact that the recipe is secret. -

Oh, I wish I lived in a place where I could get Tomberlies. Well, technically, I could get it, but those shipping costs are a bit much

ARCHIVED Does Soy Intolerance Mean All Legumes?
hathor replied to horsegirl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Good question. I'll be interested in the responses myself I have noticed a problem if I have a lot of peanuts. But this might be an issue with fat. I also reacted to lupin flour (used in a European-manufactured gluten-free pasta -- apparently, lupin is the new soy in Europe; it is an allergen that has to be listed in the EU). I haven... -
I've just tried some of this. It isn't too bad in a sandwich. I wouldn't eat it by itself or just on a cracker, though. Not quite cheeselike ... Of course, tastes vary. I've heard people before who absolutely love this stuff. Others dislike it.

ARCHIVED Soy Allergy Vs. Soy Intolerance
hathor replied to michelleL's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Well that stinks. Thanks for the heads up! I don't know that I react to lecithin. But items with soybean oil tend to be a problem for me, at least in the quantity where they list it as an ingredient. -
ARCHIVED Food Intolerance Test Results
hathor replied to Tanzanite's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Sorry, I missed the UK location. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't British vendors of similar, or even the same, items, though. I know I've ordered some gluten-free products from US vendors that were manufactured in Europe. In case you haven't seen this site before: Open Original Shared Link I ran across this when I was doing some research... -
I believe someone recently posted a link to an article about how D3 supplements are better than the usual D2 ones. A number of foods are supplemented with D. I see my hemp milk has D2 and my orange juice has D3. I wouldn't recommend taking more than what your doctor personally prescribes. You don't want to overdose. Do you get much sunlight? This...

ARCHIVED Food For Life Breads
hathor replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They have more than these four. I happen to have China black rice & rice pecan bread in my fridge right now. I see more types on their web site. I haven't had the crumbling problem, myself. I buy them frozen, but then put them in the regular section of the fridge. I haven't noticed them going stale. I don't find the need to toast, nuke, etc...
