ARCHIVED Celiac-when Family Members Refuse To Get It
hathor replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry to hear the additional explanation. Wanting to serve something with "wheat gluten" in it sounds pretty passive aggressive to me. Is she the sort where everything has to be about her? In other words, you have the problem, but she wants to convert it into a problem of hers as to how she has to cook special things for you (and so dismisses your need... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Isn't The Culprit
hathor replied to ElenaDragon's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, you can have some lactose-free milk or regular milk and a Lactaid pill. If you have problems, it is probably from casein. If you are fine, then try regular milk by itself. A reaction would then mean it is the lactose. Yes, a lot of bread does have some dairy in it. Pie crust often has butter. If you have only had problems following this... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free, But Do I Have Celiacs?
hathor replied to amh04's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Given your dramatic response to being gluten-free, it really doesn't make any difference if it is celiac or gluten intolerance. Both are permanent, can cause severe problems, and entail permanent and total elimination of gluten from the diet. The only difference is damage that gluten has done up to that point to one's body. With gluten intolerance, it... -
ARCHIVED Celiac-when Family Members Refuse To Get It
hathor replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you tried giving her written information about the dangers of untreated celiac -- the cancer, the osteoporosis, and all the rest? If yes, then you have done all you can. All I can think then is that she is either supremely self-centered (is it inconvenience to her or to you?) or she cares so deeply about you that she can't absorb that there is anything... -
ARCHIVED Who Gets Angry At People Who "can't Stick To Their Diets"
hathor replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I feel that way at times, those who can't lose weight or who can't follow a diet that would do wonders for their GERD or heart disease or whatever but would rather just take a pill. I've quit smoking, lost weight, quit eating animal products, quit gluten, quit soy. I just did it. Another one -- "it is my genes that make me fat." Yeah, funny... -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With Meals Within A New Dating Situation
hathor replied to bigapplekathleen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, what are you hungry for I am a vegetarian (a real one, not one who eats fish ). What I usually make for guests is vegetarian paella. Folks always seem to like it. He could make a regular seafood one too. I have a very simple baked risotto recipe to which whatever veggies you want can be added at the end. (Heck, you could add shrimp... -
ARCHIVED Why Is gluten-free Food So Freaking Expensive?
hathor replied to leelee20's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
NoGluGirl already mentioned vegiac.com, which caters (ha ha) to both vegetarians and vegans. There is a gluten-free issues forum at www.drmcdougall.com (the McDougall diet is pretty much vegan, except there is no restriction on honey). There are two Yahoo groups for the gluten-free, one for vegetarians and one for vegans. The vegan one has a large number... -
ARCHIVED Is Irish Bailey's gluten-free?
hathor replied to tabdegner's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You really do have to be paranoid, don't you? But I guess if you end up finding something, you are not paranoid. I happened upon this list once I started researching drinks, after hearing that two teas I liked contained gluten. -
It certainly sounds like it could be a gall bladder problem. Do you find things worse after eating a higher fat meal? I do know that tests for gall stones won't tell you everything. I was twice told I was OK. But I found that high fat eating and certain foods would put me in agony. More recent reading has disclosed that celiac can cause problems...

If you can't tell, you can always ask the manufacturer. I kept getting low level glutening from my hair gel, which listed wheat. -

ARCHIVED Why Is gluten-free Food So Freaking Expensive?
hathor replied to leelee20's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is possible to be vegan and avoid gluten. Not to volunteer advice when it isn't precisely being sought If you do want to talk about this, you could start a thread on that topic. (Or search -- is has come up before). I also know some vegetarian gluten-free forums I could direct to you. If you want ... I realize that things can be harder at college... -
ARCHIVED Help - I Need Help With The Ingredient List!
hathor replied to jmd3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OK, you have me curious. What is the product? -
Thanks for the suggestion, merika. If Nestle ever cleans up its act as regards child labor, perhaps I will buy some. Right now, they and a number of other manufacturers are on my boycott list. See, e.g., Open Original Shared Link and the link for rating different companies. I know this isn't the forum for debating political issues. I just provide the...

ARCHIVED Entrolab Test
hathor replied to Linda56's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Linda, It might be worth your while to go on a systematic elimination diet. You start off with the small number of foods that rarely cause anyone problems, eating only those things for a week and seeing if your symptoms resolve. If so, you then slowly add things one at a time & see if you react. It can take a long time, but I've seen people say... -
How long have you been gluten-free? When I was first starting out, my intestines were rather manic depressive. I didn't gluten myself and yet went a week without a BM. Then for no apparent reason I had movements over several hours, starting out hard and painful and at the end watery. Very strange ... like the body purging itself. I'll tell you I never...

ARCHIVED I Know I Am Gluten Intolerant

I'm glad you are feeling better. Yes, casein-free would include omitting yogurt made from cow's milk. You might try asking your China question on the travel forum. -
ARCHIVED Entrolab Test
hathor replied to Linda56's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just want to make sure -- having one or the other "celiac gene" doesn't mean you have celiac. That diagnosis requires other testing. A rather significant proportion of the population has the genes without having the disease. So don't spend the money on the test thinking it will tell you anything that the other testing or your response to being gluten... -
Thanks for the link. I've tried EnerG egg replacer and ground flax seeds before, and those both work. Knowing these other techniques will give me more flexibility in doing recipe conversion.

ARCHIVED Trader Joe's
hathor replied to gfmolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, Trader Joes does seem to put that label on everything. It does give me pause. But ... The products where I seem to have problems are the nuts and dried fruits. I haven't had a reaction (knock wood) from anything else. I guess I am willing to try things (except for nuts & dried fruits) despite the label, in that the absence of such a... -
ARCHIVED How Gluten Free Do I Need To Be?
hathor replied to jeggen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I certainly never plan for an indulgence. Just accidentally glutening myself is bad enough. I'm impressed that you never did this in 2 years, par18! Or had it done to you ... If you are like many (most?) people, jeggen, once you have been gluten-free for a bit, any ingestion of the stuff makes you feel bad. I will feel worse with glutening than... -
ARCHIVED Going To The Uk?
hathor replied to It's Karin with an I's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I forgot to include this link: Open Original Shared Link This doesn't have as many gluten-free places as you get with the search engine at the other link I provided. I just mention it because most of the places mentioned are locations of Wagamama. So being gluten-free there must be possible ... -
ARCHIVED Going To The Uk?
hathor replied to It's Karin with an I's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
What a coincidence ... we are traveling to London next spring because my daughter is studying there this upcoming school year! Is your daughter also going to UCL? I haven't started pulling together much food information yet (I'm the one with problems). My impression is that England is much easier gluten-free-wise than the US. Here is one link I've...
