    ARCHIVED Parma!

This looks interesting. Now I have to decide if I can have yeast. I tested just above the cutoff for yeast intolerance, but I've never noticed any symptoms. Recently I've had some products made with yeast and again no symptoms. Oh, decisions decisions ...
  2. There is stool testing from Enterolab for casein, egg, soy & yeast intolerances.
  3. I'm a vegetarian, so ordinarily I wouldn't comment on a thread like this I do want to warn people though ... some falafel mixes contain wheat. Always read labels!
  4. Well, Enterolab doesn't even diagnose celiac; it diagnoses gluten intolerance. You can get the genetic testing in addition to the intolerance tests, but this just tells you if you have the identified genes for celiac. Not everyone with the genes has problems, and people can have severe problems with gluten without the genes. If you wonder if you are...
  5. Well, there is some debate. But it mostly seems to be between medical experts that don't have gluten problems themselves and those of us who live with such problems. I've certainly seen any number of people mention getting better once gluten-laden personal care items are eliminated. There is another thread where people are discussing being glutened at...
  6. Non-celiac gluten intolerance is as good a title as any, at least some folks use it. We here will know what you mean. Then again, we know what it means to be double DQ1 Honestly, we should start our own little mini support group it seems ... For "normals," I just call it gluten intolerance. One is lucky enough if people know what gluten is; to...
  7. Balsamic dressing can contain soy sauce. I know the type I preferred to buy (Marie's) does. I've never seen a balsamic vinegar that itself contained gluten.
  8. You might talk to the restaurant. Sometimes they will prepare you something not on the menu or will modify something so it won't be gluten free. It won't hurt to ask. Tell them you will have to bring your own food otherwise If they won't accommodate you, go with your own food and just order drinks. My husband has this problem with a restaurant...
  9. Maybe I'll try another six pack of Redbridge from the first place I bought it and carefully check when it was brewed. It is possible that the stuff doesn't last as long as beer made from other ingredients. (Strangely, the second place I bought it is the one that had it in a refrigerated case, although I don't know for how long.) I'll have to figure...
  10. The first six pack of Redbridge I enjoyed. By the time I was on my second (this is over the course of a couple weeks, not all at once ), I thought it had a strange aftertaste. So I bought some New Grist & compared the two last night. New Grist seems to have no flavor at all. Sigh. Is it back to wine and scotch for me? I was wondering...
  11. I just can't figure out why I've checked everything else (I hope) but not these things. I looked at soaps, cleansers, makeup, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, etc. Why didn't I look at these? All I can think is that I did a comprehensive review of everything I used when I went gluten-free. I carefully check everything new I BUY. I was cleaning out my...
  12. Well, I checked the two styling products I've been using the last couple months & see they both contain hydrolyzed wheat protein and hydrolyzed wheat starch. I check everything else, I think ... I'm feeling pretty stupid right now. (It must be the gluten ) No wonder I haven't gotten completely better. Now I'm curious what else I've overlooked...
  13. Actually, after I wrote this I saw someone just started a thread on this very topic: Open Original Shared Link So you might monitor that. That poster said at least six weeks ...
  14. Get a copy of your results. You might not have even been given all the necessary tests or they are being read incorrectly. It wouldn't be the first time ... and, if one thing is clear, it is that your doctor is hardly an expert on celiac. It sounds like you might have problems getting the results out of them. Some places are like that. My BIL recently...
  15. I agree with both these suggestions. Bread from Anna is nice because it doesn't have the other things I can't have, which many other gluten-free breads do. Of course, EnerG bread doesn't either, but it is awful. I ended up feeding it to the birds or squirrels. Well, some desperate critters ate it all. Which reminds me, do NOT NOT NOT get Holgrain...
  16. If you find it hard to commit to a gluten-free diet without positive test results of some kind (I know, I was in the same category), you could always try Enterolab. They say the antibodies they test for show up prior to the time ones in the blood do, both of which happen before villi damage is observable. Of course, as folks have already told you, enough...
  17. Wow ... just when I thought I knew about all the peculiar ways one can get glutened I'm glad my stylist works in the corner & doesn't spray my hair. For some reason, when I go in she doesn't have people working next to her, so that's good. She's mentioned having other celiac clients, so I should tell her. (Yes, I know I'm not officially celiac...
  18. Forget what I said about Rice Dreams. I just read this thread and found out that, while the packaging has changed, the formula has NOT: Open Original Shared Link
  19. Thanks again. I can hardly wait to travel in a country where everyone knows about gluten! They actually test all children for celiac. I wonder why they are so enlightened and we aren't? Imagine the gluten-free options we would have here if 97% of celiacs did NOT go undiagnosed and all doctors (and the public) realized that there is such a thing as non...
  20. Oh, shoot. And I recently said something somewhere about hearing (I did say "maybe" or "perhaps") that Rice Dreams had changed. I'm going to have to backtrack & figure out where I said this. I don't want to cause anyone's glutening
  21. As long as we are sharing quick or easy meals -- Scrub & cut Yukon Gold potatoes into big chunks (no need to peel). Bake until the outside is a little crispy. Put prepared pasta sauce over it. From one McDougall cookbook, which I vary quite a bit: 2 cups of assorted beans/split peas, cut up onion, 4 cups water & whatever seasonings you...
  22. OK, do NOT make this subbing buckwheat for some of the lentils, or at least not the medium granulation type. I just had to warn people off The places I shop don't have those carts. I'm thinking when the well is really dry I will send my husband out to buy things. Of course, there will be things he can't find because he is male and won't ask, or...
  23. My theory is that they say "wheat free" on some gluten free items because folks who are allergic to wheat don't necessarily know what gluten is. Why would they have to? They just ("just" ) have to avoid wheat.
  24. Please do report back. I had a negative experience with another cruise line (Amadeus) this summer. I had faxed them with my needs & they said it would be no problem. I talked to the head of hotel operations once on the ship; again, I was told there would be no problem. However, the kitchen kept recommending things I knew I couldn't eat. A couple...
  25. I'm thinking I read somewhere that Rice Dreams has or is in the process of changing their formula so that it is gluten-free. Am I dreaming? Anyway, if you can't find a soy milk that is acceptable, there are rice milks, as well as milks made from almonds & other things. My favorite is actually hemp milk.
