Since milk is one of those allergens that have to be listed on labels, you can always look for that. But just google ... there are assorted lists of ingredients to avoid for casein sensitivity. The main thing is to avoid anything than mentions obvious dairy-type things (milk, cheese, whey, cream, yogurt, etc.) or says "casein" or "caseinate." I don't find...

ARCHIVED Recently Found Out Had Soy And Egg Allergies
hathor replied to Clarise49's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Let me know how the soy sauce substitute works. I ran across a similar one (molasses & balsamic vinegar was it? something like that ...) and someone said it was awful. Fatfreevegan.com has a number of gluten free recipes, but this wasn't the Yahoo group I meant. Nor was the vegiac.com, which only has a few recipes and seems to be just starting... -
ARCHIVED Snacks? Dairy, Soy, Gluten And Corn Free
hathor replied to mn farm gal's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Be careful with rice cheeses. Some will say "lactose free" but contain casein. I like -- hummus or baba ghanouj with acceptable crackers, toast or raw veggies nut butter on the same snack bars with no unacceptable ingredients and of course, there are nuts, dried & fresh fruit, and DARK CHOCOLATE (I'm not corn free -- so I can also have... -
ARCHIVED Testing For Lactose And Casein Intolerances
hathor replied to Guhlia's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't see why pregnancy would affect the test results. The anticasein antibodies would be there in a specific quantity or they wouldn't be. You can always email them or call if you are uncertain. Have your symptoms gotten worse during pregnancy? It could be your body, especially now, is telling you to stay away from things you can't handle. This... -
ARCHIVED Testing For Lactose And Casein Intolerances
hathor replied to Guhlia's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you have problems with lactose free dairy, you can be tested for casein intolerance. This is something Enterolab does. -
ARCHIVED Recently Found Out Had Soy And Egg Allergies

If you have any more specific questions, ask. It is hard to respond sometimes to an "any advice" sort of post I have the same intolerances as you do (been told by Enterolab I should avoid yeast too, but I don't notice a problem now) and I'm vegetarian. You just have to read labels. But you have been doing that anyway, right? There are gluten... -

ARCHIVED Favorite Pasta Brands?
hathor replied to Tephie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Wow, such a diversity of opinion. I'm one that isn't that big a fan of Tinkyada. But I often use it because it is readily available. I've tried BiAglut & Schar's (too lazy to check spelling ) and they are pretty good. But they seem to be a mail order thing for me. Depending on the recipe, I've used corn pasta and quinoa pasta and they have worked... -
If you look at the labelling forum, you will find a discussion of this. There are two ways allergens can get into wine. There are fining agents that take sediment out. This can be a form of clay, egg, casein, or some part of a fish. This is why some wines are considered vegan and some aren't. Some say they have reacted to fining agents before. I haven...

ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Free On Norweigan Cruise Line
hathor replied to rmmadden's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I recently went on a cruise with another cruise line (Amadeus) and they did a poor job. Another celiac on board had recently gone on a cruise with Norwegian, however, and said it had been a wonderful experience. Perhaps it is easier to be accommodated on a larger ship? (I was on a small river ship.) Anyway, I was thinking my next cruise would be with... -

Thanks. Has anyone seen anything, other than discussion group comments, about the impact of double DQ1? I frequently get cold for no apparent reason & my doctor was unable to discover a cause. Would this be considered "neurological," I wonder? Of course, this is a pretty minor symptom. I've also fainted a few times over the years, but still ... -
ARCHIVED If You Were Me...what Would You Do?
hathor replied to Greeneyes4950's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I certainly wouldn't trust this doctor. Not everyone with celiac is underweight or has suffered major weight loss. Just browse around the weight forum. Of course, you could give your doctor another chance. Say that you've been researching celiac and have found that only a minority of people present with the previously-believed "typical" symptoms. ... -
Symptoms vary. Your symptoms could be due to one or both of these items. (Or something else, of course.) Since you are in Australia you can't do the Enterolab testing. I don't know what tests are available to you. I guess the ultimate way of knowing is to eliminate those items and see how you feel. Of course, if you feel better, you would have...

ARCHIVED Excessive Sweating When Glutened
hathor replied to Mballerina's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have hot flashes/night sweats AND periods when I am freezing for no apparent reason. I've yet to figure out why. I've had the latter for years and my doctor couldn't figure it out. I'm in menopause now so I guess that could explain the hot flashes. But then the food intolerances have happened to me about the same time. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing For Casein, Eggs, Soy, Yeast
hathor replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't see why your consumption of these items would need to be any more recent than consumption of gluten has to be for that test to work. But, as mentioned, you can simply ask them. I avoided all but occasional, minor bits of egg (occasional bakery goods on special occasions) and rarely had dairy, both for years. Yet, my tests proved positive. -
ARCHIVED Too Much Fat?
hathor replied to radgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I follow a rather low fat diet, both because I think it is healthier & the fact that more than a minimal amount of fat makes me sick. Maybe the two are connected If I have too much fat, food just sits on my stomach & doesn't digest. And my gut hurts something fierce and gets worse as the hours go by. No medicine helps. The only thing I... -
ARCHIVED Cow Milk And Soy
hathor replied to breadless in wonderland's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Many find that casein affects them every bit as strongly as gluten. Soy too. There are some who feel that these three affect the gut in the same way, as sticky sort of proteins. BTW casein intolerance is different than lactose intolerance. Casein can be added to lots of things that lack lactose. One is a protein (and hence can create antibodies) and... -
If you go to www.nhen.org, you can find information on all state regulations and also contacts for local organizations. I believe the Virginia Home Education Association has a Yahoo group; at least they used to. I'm in Maryland. So when I homeschooled my daughter, I participated in the BWHE Yahoo group (Baltimore Washington Home Educators). There...

I know there is Hadjivassiliou. I can't even spell that off the top of my head with an abstract of one of his articles in another tab. I wish I could remember where and how I got access to a full article by him that mentioned DQ1. I was ranting too in my post from my frustration. Rereading what I said I thought it might have been read to be challenging... -
ARCHIVED The Dq1 Gene
hathor replied to confused's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here are a couple abstracts. I don't know if the disorders mentioned exhaust the possibilities of neurological reactions to gluten. Probably not. I recall seeing one article, I think it was by the doctor here with the long name that mentioned the prevalence of DQ1 in the population he was examining, not just the typical "celiac genes." I don't recall... -

ARCHIVED Enterolab Results
hathor replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I wasn't trying to be argumentative. I've repeated the same things myself from having been told this before. I've just been frustrated trying to find anything specific in the literature about double DQ1. I thought you might have had some links. It seems every time this comes up I hear about this information that is out there somewhere, but my attempts... -

ARCHIVED Enterolab Results
hathor replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I hadn't heard that about double DQ1; I also have that. Where did you hear that? Sometimes I wonder if I would have felt better overall if I had continued to eat gluten. My reactions to occasional traces are way more than anything I ever experienced before when I ate lots of the stuff. It isn't like I had an endoscope done and damage was shown.... -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Out There Vegan, Or Has Anyone Tried A "raw Diet"?
hathor replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I forgot to mention other recipe sources. McDougall has cookbooks out & most of his regular books have many recipes in them too. Go to his website & the archived newsletters all have recipes and there is a recipe board. I think that somewhere on Vegsource you can find recipes as well. I really like the recipes at Open Original Shared Link Of...
