  1. There is no problem getting enough protein following a normal vegetarian diet, even without soy or huge amounts of beans. People following the SAD (Standard American Diet) get too much protein and it isn't good for them. Information about both points can be found here: Open Original Shared Link Sorry I took so long answering. After vacation I was...
  2. Many celiacs are sensitive to yeast as well, at least initially. This particular form of yeast contains MSG, so that may be your problem. Not gluten, but folks can react to it. I've heard that utensils can retain gluten on them, particularly if they are scratched. I hope you get feeling better soon. It is annoying when you don't know what you...
  3. With malabsorption but low antibodies, he could be one of those who are low in IgA (can't remember the exact name -- it is what your test results were talking about). There is a blood test to see if this is the case, I believe. Have you tried taking your son off of dairy, too? I know of anecdotal reports that this helps with symptoms such as your son...
  4. If you search, you should find that this very topic has come up repeatedly. I'm vegetarian and have to avoid gluten, casein, egg, & soy (and I'm told yeast, too) and I really don't have a problem finding things to eat. There is no way I can conceivably go through all the recipes I have ... and I keep getting more. A few suggestions: The Gluten...
  5. The only one I've ever heard of on the board that had a problem was one brand of Aim, and, if I'm not mistaken, the formulation has been changed. (Don't anybody rely on my shaky memory on this point!) I'd just check with the manufacturer of the brand you happen to like to make sure.
  6. There is a spread called "Better'n Peanut Butter" (I've seen it in places like Whole Foods & Trader Joe's) that has 85% less fat than regular peanut butter. It seemed sweeter & obviously not as oily as PB, but it works fine. At least for those who can have soy I really miss the stuff. One tip -- you can make many recipes with less oil than...

    ARCHIVED Doctor Won't Test Son

Perhaps if you make clear that you will take your business elsewhere if the doctor won't test your son, the doctor will then have a change of heart. I would try to talk directly to the doctor also, not through the nurse. Or will that cost you money?
  8. I've been eating vegan for years. Adding gluten free earlier this year wasn't that big a stretch. Avoiding soy now is more challenging, but I'm managing. We'll see how I feel after vacation. Leaving today for nearly 3 weeks ... my first extended trip since going gluten-free. I should be excited about vacation and I'm obsessed instead with food! ...
  9. Depending on where you are around the District, you may want to check out Great Sage in Clarksville. Open Original Shared Link It is the only place around here I've found that actually identifies what is vegan (thus no dairy or egg), gluten free, or soy free, or can be made any of the foregoing. The last time I went I ordered a sandwich & when I...
  10. Oops, is it that obvious what I am? I haven't practiced for years, but once a lawyer, always a lawyer I guess. I wasn't trying to argue really, just to clarify the point that the entire label should be read. Mentioning that we are dealing with a statute not a regulation was simply to point out that the FDA has no discretion to change the way things are...
  11. I sympathize. My reactions to casein are actually worse than to gluten. I guess you will have to come to believe, like many of us, that dark chocolate IS chocolate. Milk chocolate is merely candy.
  12. I've found that quinoa is very flexible. You can add different combo's of veggies or beans & different seasonings. You can cook it up with other gluten-free grains or put it in soups or stews. You can use it as a sub for bulghur or couscous. One of my favorite ways to have quinoa is to cook it & then add some corn, black beans, & salsa.
  13. I'll spare you that task. The word is "genteel."
  14. I have no information on the modified food starch issue being debated. However, this statement jumped out at me since I have read the law. The law requires the allergens to be disclosed in either the ingredients list or a "contains" statement. If the ingredients list includes wheat, the law does not require a contains statement showing wheat. So labels...
  15. If you google, I think you can find what you need. Here is one version of an elimination diet: Open Original Shared Link I know there are others. I ran across another one once, but I didn't save the link.
  16. I don't get the same responses (except that gluten, casein & soy all constipate me). Gluten gives me brain fog & headaches, casein makes my sinuses run, and soy makes me break out. Egg upsets my stomach. According to Enterolab, I'm intolerant to yeast also, but I've never noticed a reaction. Reactions really do vary from person to person. ...
  17. If you've reacted to beef in the past, I don't see why you don't consider that it might be the beef that is the problem, not the gluten-free status of the meal. Back when I was eating meat, I often had problems with beef.
  18. Yes, fining agents remove particulates, like the yeast. Commonly used are casein, egg white, some part from fish (yum) and a type of clay. The proposal to have vintners list any of the common allergens would entail mentioning wheat (from the casks), milk, egg, and fish (from fining). Vegan wines do not use animal products for fining. I haven't found any...
  19. Oh, I'm glad to hear this. I'm leaving on vacation next week, flying Delta. I'll have to change my meal from vegan to gluten-free. Or maybe there is some way I can manage both (& get soy free too ...) -- don't airlines sometimes have a fruit plate option?
  20. Have you eliminated dairy from your diet? Your signature doesn't say so, but your Enterolab results would indicate it would be warranted. I don't know about a connection between gluten & sinus problems, but one is certainly there for dairy. (Just google on "dairy sinus problems.") I used to get sinus infections all the time. But when I largely...
  21. Hathor was the ancient Egyptian goddess of motherhood, alcohol & war (never quite sure of the proper order ) I always liked that combination. I'm a big Egyptophile. My daughter is actually an Egyptology major, which I now tell myself I should have had!
  22. People sometimes react to the fining agents used in wine, which can include common allergens like casein, egg, or fish (yes, you read that right). This is why some people do better with vegan wines. Unfiltered wines would accomplish the same thing. Also, I've read that sometimes a wheat-based glue is used on wine casks. I don't know if there have been...
  23. Apparently, there are malabsorption scores that are even higher than those we are talking about. From Enterolab's web site: "Values from 300 to 500 malabsorption units represent mild malabsorption; 500-1000 moderate; 1000-1500 severe; and greater than 1500 very severe malabsorption (and possibly indicating a combination of gluten-induced intestinal damage...
  24. Dang. The story: I was feeling so good, I was even wondering if I really had problems. My husband said he thought I didn't respond to tiny amounts of gluten. I get a salad that had croutons in it and the waiter takes off before I saw them. I thought I could just pick them out, or dh thought so, anyway. Eating it I actually crunched into a tiny crumb...
  25. Have you tried their Seattle Crackers? I'm intrigued by these two because I can't have yeast either -- and I've found it really hard to find tasty crackers without that (much less high fiber).
