  1. The Real Chow Baby, Nan (awesone Thai food), R. Thomas and South City Kitchen are close and all are highly recommended. The Real Chow Baby would be a short cab ride but it's worth it. If you like to walk I think you could walk to all of them except maybe the Real Chow Baby. If you do walk use the small side streets along Peachtree. There are some great...
  2. One half of the in-laws lives in Santa Ynez (just north of Santa Barbara) and I've eaten successfully at the Shoreline Beach Caf
  3. Thanks for the info. We rented a townhouse on the beach. The dogs are going with us so I suspect we'll cook most of our meals at the house. We'll definitely check out Ada's. We're planning a visit to the Edison & Ford homes and I think Ada's is in the same area.
  4. We're heading to Sanibel Island in a few weeks and I would like to know if anyone out there has a restaurant recommendation for the Fort Myers (or Naples) area? We can always find one of the chains with a gluten-free menu but I'd like to experience something local if possible.
  5. I've tried several brands of gluten free oats and can say that oats cause the worst reaction of all the glutens for me.
  6. We are doing the Germany - Austria trip on Viking in November. I contacted them about my multiple intolerances (gluten, dairy and soy) and preferences (quasi-vegetarian) as well as my husband
  7. We are taking our first cruise this fall and we decided to go with the Viking River Cruise in Germany. I have multiple sensitivities and contacted them to see if they could accommodate my gluten, casein and soy free diet. To further complicate things, I am also quasi-vegetarian (I eat fish & eggs). I was a little concerned because I had so many requirements...
  8. I am not a fan of any medication but I agree with Nikki on this one. If you have a positive RF and show joint damage you should not wait on the methotrexate. DMARDS are the gold standard for RA treatment and there is a lot of research suggesting the sooner you start the better your long-term prognosis. Six months can cause irreparable harm to your joints...
  9. I visited Washington DC this week and wanted to share a few places to eat. We visited several Smithsonian museums while we were there. I was surprised to see the cafeteria at the American Indian Museum labeled quite a few of their dishes gluten free, vegetarian, etc. It is a cafeteria so I can't say that there isn't an issue of cross contamination but...
  10. I don't trust food in airports but lived in the Atlanta airport for several years when I was on the road. I would try Houlihan's in the Atrium (it is outside security), Le Petit Bistro on T, Chili's Too on A or Magnolia on B. There isn't much on E and I am a Delta girl so I don't know anything about Concourses C or D. Hope this helps. You can always...
  11. There are several non-chain restaurants in Atlanta that have gluten-free menus or chefs that will prepare gluten-free food. Always ask to speak to the manager or chef. I have eaten at The Real Chow Baby, R Thomas, Carpe Diem, Tamarind, MF Sushi and Nan without problems. I understand that Bones, Blue Pointe, Nava and the Flying Biscuit can accomodate but...
  12. Moe's responded to me today and said they only have one fryer and it is used for both corn and flour. My concerns about cross-contamination and desire to add a dedicated fryer for chips have been forwarded to corporate so maybe we'll see some action.
  13. Well, Moe's categories are: wheat or other glutens soy milk eggs fish yellow 5 MSG I am always bothered by those because I am not sure they take into account cross-contamination but I think it's helpful in identifying actual foods that contain an allergen. I did ask Moe's about cross contamination with the fryers and will let you know what...
  14. You can buy the packets at gluten free.com
  15. They did not list ingredients. It's one of the charts that has a dot when something contains an allergen. Good to know about the chips.
  16. I contacted Moe's last week and received an allergen chart in PDF format which I can't figure out how to post but I'm sure you can email them and they will send it. I'm glad to see most of the items are gluten free! The items that are not gluten free are: Flour Tortillas, chicken, steak and tofu. Everything else is gluten free.
  17. This is funny. I just contacted Cracker Barrel a few days ago too and received the very detailed email about gluten in their food that rtucker2000 received. I also have a soy and dairy intolerance and asked about that. Here is the info they added on to the email about dairy and soy. I assume they have info on other allergens like corn but I didn't specifically...
  18. I just saw something on CNN last night about a condition called popcorn lung. The butter flavoring contains a chemical called diacetyl and it apparently made a lot of factory workers sick so I guess it's possible that if you eat popcorn every day that it could affect you in some way. I had to cut out the bagged popcorn because something in it disagreed...
  19. I would recommend a biopsy and the genetic test but you have to keep eating gluten for your biopsy. Even if it is negative you can have serious issues with gluten without being celiac. A few people in my family have this problem. We did the genetic tests and have both celiac and gluten sensitive genes. My list of complaints included the stuff you mention...
  20. I'm coming in a little late here but I like to think I'm fashionably late. I have a degree in computer science and have worked for about 10 years in the industry - most recently as a consulting services manager for a software company. I am currently on sabattical and managing my husband's art career.
  21. I think most people see Dr. Rudert but she does not accept insurance so if that is an issue here is a list of Doctors from the Metro Atlanta Celiacs group and I'm sure some of them accept ins. Open Original Shared Link
  22. I was a road warrior for seven years and never checked a bag until I was diagnosed. Now I have a seperate suitcase for food and cooking supplies. If I'm going to a place where I know it may be difficult to find food I pack an electric wok, a plastic lettuce knife and cutting board. I pack my gluten free food like pasta, crackers, salad dressing and hit...
  23. Hi Fiona, I spent a month in Taiwan last summer. The Taiwanese have a lot of pride and take their jobs very seriously so I had a lot more confidence that the wait staff would take my requests seriously and comply. I would not expect mainland China to be any different. If your Chinese is very bad so I would recommend a written card in a couple of...
  24. I am a pesce vegetarian (meaning I eat fish) and am also intolerant to dairy and soy. I was a vegetarian for 10 years before I had to elimiate gluten. I had to change my eating habits quite a bit because there is almost no comercially prepared or fast foods that are gluten, dairy, soy and meat free but that was a good thing because I wasn't eating fast...
