  1. Not sure how soon you need it but you can order an 8 pack online: Open Original Shared Link
  2. Thanks for sharing. This is good stuff.
  3. I think these sites are particularly helpful when you are just starting out. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link https://www.celiac.com/ (This forum is a part of celiac.com)
  4. Red Lobster has been discussed several times here and I think the general consensus is that they do not accomodate a gluten-free diet (or any other allergy for that matter). I think the best rule of thumb is to avoid restaurants that do not publish a gluten-free menu and be extremely careful at the ones that do because most don't train their staff. This...
  5. My votes: Namaste Spice cake (made as a carrot cake) Cause You're Special Lemon Pound Cake And, not technically a cake but Trader Joe's Brownie Mix
  6. Rice Dream uses a barley protein in their processing and until very recently their label disclosed this. The barley note has recently been removed and replaced with gluten-free because the final product tests out at less than 20ppm but the formulation has not changed. Many celiacs react to Rice Dream, myself included, and many of us don't really consider...
  7. Low blood pressure can be caused by a number of things. You should have your thyroid and ferritin checked. You could be anemic or have hypothyroid.
  8. I second the Citracal - Gluten-free Casein-free and very gentle on the stomach.
  9. Feeling cold can also be a sign of anemia. Have you had your ferritin checked recently?
  10. Anemia affects a lot of different functions in your body so it's possible that what you describle is realated to years of chronic anemia but it might be a good idea to have your other vitamin and mineral levels checked as well as your thyroid. I can't quite tell from your post if you are celiac and are on a gluten-free diet. If you aren't it might not be...
  11. There are tons of backpacking opportunities within a few hours of Boston in Vermont and New Hampshire. Mt. Washington is awesome. Also, the Applachian Trail runs through western MA. The AT is good for beginners because it's well mapped, has shelters, and a lot of times you can find shuttles to/from. Some rental car agencies offer special weekend rates...
  12. I do quite a bit of adventure travel and did a lot of serious backpacking when I lived in Arizona. The best advice I can offer is to start out with day hikes and when you're comfortable move on to an overnight car camping trip. Also, invest in some good lightweight gear. backpacking.net has some good information on backpacking and has a list for an 18...
  13. I am heading to Albuqerque in a few weeks and it just wouldn't be a trip to New Mexico without green chile (red is OK but I'm a green girl and I like it hot). Does anyone know if Sadie's or Weck's can do gluten-free? Or, if you have other suggestions please let me know.
  14. At my lowest point my ferritin was 3. It's now up to 60 but my doctor (who is just the best) thinks that anything below 80 should be addressed with a supplement. If your ferritin is that low you can't really get it back up without a supplement and even then it takes months to get it up to an acceptable level. The iron shots/IVs are a last resort and are...
  15. Winter Park is nice. A set of in-laws live in Mt. Dora which is a neat little town about an hour north of Orlando. There is an Italian restaurant in town that will prepare gluten-free food. I think it's Vincent's. Mt. Dora is pretty small and I think there is only 1 Italian place in town. We eat there quite a bit and I've never had any issues. I only...
  16. I am currently dealing with some insurance issues and wanted to share with everyone and see if anyone has any ideas or suggestions that I've missed. For many years I was insured through employers with no issues. In October 2006, I left my company and elected COBRA coverage. My COBRA coverage exhausted on April 30 of this year. I have been shopping...
  17. You have to go! Shanghai is a really awesome city and definitely worth the long trip. The worst part of the trip for me was the 15 hour flight from Atlanta. They didn't load a gluten-free meal but fortunately I had food with me and the flight attendants came up with salads and fruit to supplement. Since your brother lives there you'll have access to a...
  18. Galaxy Naturals has a vegan rice cheese that is casein and soy free. It comes in slices and I think shreads. Road's End Organics makes a cheese substitute called "Chreese". It is a sauce type concoction that is good for pizzas, pastas and such. Namaste makes a pasta product called "Say Cheez". Finally, if don't have a problem with cashews there are...
  19. MommaGoose, I visited Shanghai last month and had a great time. I posted about grocery stores and restaurants Open Original Shared Link and maybe it'll help you out.
  20. I am dairy and soy free and we don't have a problem in our house. My husband has no food issues whatsoever and loves the way we make our food. I cook everything gluten, dairy and soy free and we add stuff to his food once it's plated. So if we have pasta he'll add parmesean or if it's stir fry he'll add soy sauce. All of the condiments (soy sauce, ketchup...
  21. 20PPM is now considered gluten-free under the US labeling laws that are set to go into effect later this year. For those of us who are affected by small amounts of gluten this will indeed make our lives more difficult. The change of the Rice Dream label is a perfect example of this.
  22. My husband, who is not celiac, has this problem when he eats anything with MSG.
  23. It varies quite a bit from person to person but anything between 250-1000 MG would be normal. The RDA is in the 300-400MG range. I'd start with 250-500MG and adjust as necessary.
  24. I second the magnesium! I don't do the powder though. I do the pill thing and take Magnesium, Calcium and Vit D at the same time but I take them individually because I've never been happy with the combo thing.
