ARCHIVED Is There Any Chocolate Without Soy
ravenwoodglass replied to Debbie B in MD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Enjoy Life makes chocolate chips without soy, gluten or dairy. I find them in the organic section of my regular store, Wegmans, and also at my local health food store. -
ARCHIVED Puttin In Work
ravenwoodglass replied to Junot's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You need to do two things, get in touch with Social Services explain your situation and see if you qualify for food stamps. They will likely want you to apply for temporary disability and you should do so. Your doctor has told you that you can't work in your present job and should be able to give you a note to that effect. Social Services may be also able... -
ARCHIVED Overeating/cravings
ravenwoodglass replied to joej1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Joe, This is not unusual. If you are concerned about overeating what you might want to try is making only the amount you feel is appropriate and filling out the meal with fruits and veggies. Your body is craving not just calories but also nutrients like vitamins and protein so do make those meals as balanced as you can. This should resolve in time and... -
ARCHIVED Type One Diabetic For 18 Years, Related To Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to angelfaerie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Type 1 diabetics are one of the groups that are supposed to be screened for celiac as they are a group that has a higher rate of the disease. Your doctor really should have done a blood test before you started the diet. You may want to see if you can get a referral to a dietian knowledgable about both to give you a bit of help with it. We do have some type... -
ARCHIVED What To Do For Dh Of The Scalp?
ravenwoodglass replied to kdprouty's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Make sure you are checking your shampoos and conditioners to be sure they don't contain gluten ingredients. I never found anything that would help with the sores other than being very strict with the diet and avoiding iodine and gluten containing topicals. If your lesions are extremely bad your doctor may be able to give you a short course of prednisone to... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Test, Endoscopy Next Week
ravenwoodglass replied to Katrala's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. The day they do the endo you should go strictly gluten free. The procedure is not bad, you won't have to do the 'clean out' that you had to do with the colonoscopy. Do make sure you have someone drive you to the procedure and they will need to stay while it is done to drive you home. You won't be able to drive for the rest of the day... -
ARCHIVED How Common Is It To Not Have Diarrhea And Have Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to Candikane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could be describing me both as a child and for most of my adult life. I didn't get D until after my second child was born but had been celiac since I was about 5, that was when I developed DH rashes that were misdiagnosed as 'poison ivy in my blood'. I was aware of my physical and vocal ticks but there was nothing I could do to stop them. They disappeared... -
This is some of us are saying to do the diet strictly before having the surgery. Nothing against your doctor but he won't make any money if you do the diet first and then the gallbladder issues clear up. I haven't had any gallbladder pain at all since I went gluten free. Don't know if that would be the case for you but IMHO it is worth a shot before getting...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Makeup In Dept. Stores
ravenwoodglass replied to wannabhealthy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten can be absorbed through the mucous membranes which will trigger antibodies. Some countries test for celiac using gluten filled swabs or suppositories and then biopsy the membranes to look for antibodies to diagnose especially when someone has been gluten free for a while. This antibody reaction includes the eyes and nose as well as the mouth. Some... -
ARCHIVED Gene Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to goodnews's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree strongly with this. The diet may resolve all issues and negate the need for surgery. -
If you had positive blood tests before you went on the diet then you are celiac. The fact that the antibodies resolved shows that you are doing the diet well enough to at least keep the antibody levels down. Gene testing can be done but gene testing cannot firmly rule celiac in or out. There are celiacs with genes that are not one of the two typically associated...

ARCHIVED Gene Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to goodnews's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Of course that is only the diagnosed celiacs that they have gene tested. It isn't routine to gene test all when they are diagnosed and then there are the 10% that have a different associated gene. As for yourself if you have symptoms with the results of the gene tests you should be sure to do at least a couple months strictly gluten free no matter what the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Natural Shampoo
ravenwoodglass replied to superfob's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also would suggest Shikai. Giovanni is another that might be a good one for you. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed-Collagenous Sprue Any Others?
ravenwoodglass replied to momtojzsh's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is advised that when one family member is diagnosed that all first degree relatives be tested whether they have symptoms or not. So you should not only test your kids you should also make brothers, sisters, Mother and Father aware of the diagnosis so they can also be tested. Since false negatives are common if someone, like your children, have symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed-Collagenous Sprue Any Others?
ravenwoodglass replied to momtojzsh's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Collagenous sprue from what I saw when I quickly looked it up is similiar to refractory celiac. Were you previously diagnosed with celiac but haven't responded to the diet? If that is not the case and you are newly diagnosed with celiac (some doctors will refer to celiac as Sprue) you are in the right place to learn all you need to about being gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Help
ravenwoodglass replied to aking3028's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What are you typically eating? Have you deglutened your home? Have you checked all scripts and OTC drugs as well as supplements? Have you eliminated gluten from all your toiletries? I used to get horrible migraines when I was consuming gluten and thankfully they ended once I got rid of every possible source of gluten. They do return full force with even a... -
ARCHIVED Advice About My Gasroscopy Please....
ravenwoodglass replied to fozbery's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am allergic to iodine so I didn't have the dye. It would be a good idea to touch base with your doctor about the reaction, just to be on the safe side. -
ARCHIVED Just Saw The Gi For My Daughter Argh!
ravenwoodglass replied to Debbie B in MD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor is flat out wrong about the blood work. You may want to ask for a second opinion. You also mention she has improved on the diet. She would need to do a much longer challenge than just a couple of weeks for the best chance at a positive diagnosis with the scope. Even then if the doctor does not do enough biopsies or the damage is patchy she could... -
ARCHIVED Advice About My Gasroscopy Please....
ravenwoodglass replied to fozbery's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I do hope it was gluten-free solution. I have had a couple of CTs both before and after diagnosis. The first one, before diagnosis I didn't even make it out of the hospital before needing to rush for the restroom. My second CT, after diagnosis, I insisted on gluten-free solution and the doctor even wrote it on the orders and I had no ill effects at all. ... -
ARCHIVED La Tortilla Gluten Free Wraps
ravenwoodglass replied to finlayson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am very sensitive to CC but I would risk trying these. It sounds like their procedures are good and they are well aware of CC risks. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Gene Test Results
ravenwoodglass replied to mielle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gene testing is only a small part of the picture. There are diagnosed celiacs that do not have the two genes most commonly associated with celiac. While gene testing can at times be helpful it is only one diagnostic tool. The best test being response to the diet after all testing is completed. -
ARCHIVED Dandy Blend Coffee Substitute
ravenwoodglass replied to Flexigirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wouldn't touch the stuff. -
If you want to stop the Nexium you will need to taper off it. Asking your doctor for a lower dose pill is the first step, go to that and then after a bit ask for an even lower dose. You are consuming soy in some of your foods. You may want to drop it for a bit and see if that helps. It isn't unusual for us to have an intolerance to soy.

ARCHIVED Advice About My Gasroscopy Please....
ravenwoodglass replied to fozbery's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since celiac can appear at any time in your life a negative test 6 years ago is worthless. Hopefully your next blood test will show something, do ask to get a hard copy of the test results as even a point or two into the positive range is positive but doctors will sometimes say a low positive is a negative. It would be a good thing to ask that the liquid...
