ARCHIVED Fibercon?
ravenwoodglass replied to suzanne*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Why would your doctor tell you to use Fibercon for D? According to their website it is used to relieve constipation. If you are celiac avoiding gluten will take care of the D without any meds. If you are in the testing process don't go gluten free until the tests are finished. If you are gluten free and still having D try eliminating dairy for a bit and see... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Presents. Ugh!
ravenwoodglass replied to Juliebove's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There are puzzle type contraptions that you can even put the cash into. You could get some different ones and wrap them seperately with different amounts in them so she would have packages under the tree. You said she does like some DVDs so ask for a list of some she would like and some music CDs also. She should be able to give you a list for those. -
ARCHIVED Ater 3 Weeks I Discovered Pristiq Has Gluten In It
ravenwoodglass replied to Blessings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The first poster gave you a good reply. I always say I am allergic to wheat instead of gluten intolerant. The reason why is because wheat starch is suppossedly 'gluten free' so you could end up with a product with wheat starch and still be told it is 'gluten free'. I had such a severe reaction to Pristiq that I only took it once. What a waste of lots of money... -
First off celiac does not show up on allergy testing. You should eliminate the stuff that you are reacting to for a bit. You may find after you have been gluten free for a bit that your other intolerances will improve. Leave them out till you are fully healed on the gluten free diet and then add the others back in one at a time to see if you are tolerating...

ARCHIVED Not Sure What The Next Step Is
ravenwoodglass replied to MichMoo's mom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She needs to get into the colleges Disability Office and talk to them. Celiac is covered under the ADA. The college needs to make sure she has safe food. In my daughters case they put her in senior housing so she could have her own little kitchenette and let her opt out of the meal plan. At the least she should be allowed her own toaster, microwave, hot plate... -
ARCHIVED Can You Help A Newbie With Gluten Labeling?
ravenwoodglass replied to aedixon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The tests for gluten in foods don't test for no gluten. Some are tolerated by folks who are not very sensitive and some folks won't tolerate them. I don't tolerate small amounts of gluten but for me the key part of the label is 'processed on a plant that processes gluten foods'. Those I personally stay away from. -
ARCHIVED Some Help, Please
ravenwoodglass replied to Sevenoclk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sure is nice to be able to zip those jeans. I loved having an excuse to buy new clothes. I had to wear a 14/16 to accomodate my belly before I was diagnosed. I'm now the same size I was in high school....at age 54. -
ARCHIVED Vitamin D Deficiency
ravenwoodglass replied to glutengal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I get those also, I call them brain farts. -
ARCHIVED Had Endoscopy Yesterday.....
ravenwoodglass replied to kpryan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you tried eliminating soy? If you haven't you may want to do so. It is not uncommon to become intolerant to it after we are diagnosed and gluten free. The stomach pain I get from soy is incredible and at first I thought I was being glutened but I didn't get the other issues, neuro and D that I get when I get glutened. -
ARCHIVED Not A Good Day At The Hospital And Feel So Lost Now.
ravenwoodglass replied to Dellers's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you were gluten free for 10 months and only did a two week challenge chances are your tests are going to be negative whether you are celiac or not. Do not use the DNA test as a for sure that you are or are not celiac. Many times they only test for 2 of the associated genes and not the other 7 or possibly more that are also associated with celiac. How... -
ARCHIVED Not A Good Day At The Hospital And Feel So Lost Now.
ravenwoodglass replied to Dellers's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. Unfortunately it isn't uncommon. Stay on the diet strictly for at least a couple months. The testing for celiac leaves a lot to be desired and it misses up to 30% of us. If you have had the biopsies get on the diet full force now. If you haven't had biopsies then wait to start the diet until those are done. If you... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin D Deficiency
ravenwoodglass replied to glutengal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
IMHO your doctor was giving you the right advice. Go with the natural D3 he advised rather than the lab made D2. -
ARCHIVED Vitamin D Deficiency
ravenwoodglass replied to glutengal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
D2 is made in a lab while D3 is a natural form often derived from fish oil. I have to respectfully disagree with 'Dr Mercola' that D2 is preferred. Perhaps it is his preference because that is the form he sells. D3 is the one that is most advised for us to take. -
ARCHIVED Can A Child "outgrow" Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to Lori2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
While remission can occur, doctors refer to it as a 'honeymoon' period, damage is still being done. This remission was the reason why doctors years ago commonly thought that celiac was a childhood disease and that children could outgrow it. It can take a long time for symptoms to reoccur and they are not always the GI symptoms that are usually thought of... -
ARCHIVED Letter To Restaurant
ravenwoodglass replied to blondie1985's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Unless you specifically told them that the pasta needed to be cooked seperately they likely cooked it in the same pot that they finish the cook for their parboiled wheat pasta in. Writing a nice letter and talking to the owner and also the chef is a really good idea. You also need to let them know that your chicken needs to be cooked in a seperate clean pan... -
ARCHIVED Getting Crafty
ravenwoodglass replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Usually the grout or caulk used in areas like bathroom tubs and kitchens is latex or acrylic based. The grout you would need to worry about is a cement type grout that is a powder you mix with water. I do use that with my stained glass mosiacs but I wear a OSHA approved filter mask (looks like a bugs face with special filters that screw into it) and gloves... -
ARCHIVED I Have Celiac, But No Sickness When I Cheat... Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to moats1234's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
While not the norm it can happen. Levels of sensitivity vary. Please don't use this as encouragement to 'cheat' every now and then. The tiredness and rash do show that your body is reacting. Once that rash, which is likely to be DH, gets a good hold in your skin it can take up to 2 years for the antibodies to leave the skin. You could also have other organs... -
ARCHIVED Some Help, Please
ravenwoodglass replied to Sevenoclk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes it is possible for celiac problems to manifest as neuro issues. I just got done doing a short research paper on it. Some people don't even have the typical GI issues but the research I looked at still defined these folks as celiac. In one study they found the antibodies in the brain on autopsy with some patients. It can cause ataxia, depression, anxiety... -
This: "Deamidated Gliadin Abs, IgA 12.4 (0-10)" is a positive test. After you are done with all testing do get on the diet strictly for a couple of months.

ARCHIVED Getting Crafty
ravenwoodglass replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wallpaper paste and drywall (joint paste) compound are often not safe. If the gesso is acrylic based that may be okay but I would still wear gloves when applying. You also need to be careful of white glues. I use acrylic paints for painting on canvas and wear gloves or use care. Don't know if that is for sure safe or not. -
ARCHIVED Question Regarding Endoscopy
ravenwoodglass replied to lymie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
False negatives are not uncommon even on a full gluten diet so after being gluten free for a month he has even stronger chances of having a false negative result. -
ARCHIVED So, Tell Me Why I Need This Endoscopy....
ravenwoodglass replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A month challenge if you have been gluten free for long enough to heal is not a long enough challenge. The challenge should be at least 2 months. If you are doing better gluten free I would skip the challenge. If you are still having issues then perhaps agree to the endo only to look and see if you have other problems. -
ARCHIVED Can A Child "outgrow" Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to Lori2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You should encourage him to at least get the blood test done. There may actually be health issues you are not aware of as not all are comfortable discussing health issues with others. Also some people think the stomach issues that often come with celiac are 'normal for them'. Celiac can impact any organ so it isn't just tummy issues that are seen. Headaches... -
ARCHIVED Some Help, Please
ravenwoodglass replied to Sevenoclk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This may not pertain to you but the 'blackout' effect is exactly what I experience with vodka even with just one drink. I can drink potato vodka all night long, remember what happened and not even have a hangover. If and when you feel brave you may want to get a small bottle of distilled grain vodka and do a challenge with it. You may find that you are sensitive... -
ARCHIVED Some Help, Please
ravenwoodglass replied to Sevenoclk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Where did you go out to eat? Were you very specific in what you ordered? It isn't just the food but also prep that we have to be careful of. If something was grilled it needs a clean pan and you have to tell them no seasoning unless the restaurant has a gluten free menu. Myself the martini would have done me in. I don't tolerate distilled gluten grains...
