  1. As far as making them palatable you might be able to mix the powder with something like applesauce instead of putting it in liquid. You might want to ask your provider if that is ok. Are you aware that the Meta Fiber has oats in it? Not all of us tolerate oats. You may want to try them one at a time to make sure you tolerate the ingredients. Open Original...
  2. That is a very important point also that can be overstressed.
  3. Toss me on that wagon also.
  4. The best place to get the answer to whether they are gluten free or not would be from the maker. If they are not gluten free you definately would not want to use them. Gluten absorbed into the blood stream through the intestines and mucous membranes cause enough of an antibody reaction. I have never heard of anything injected that wasn't gluten free but that...
  5. Celiac is definately a genetic disease. Not everyone who carries the genes develops the disease though. It usually requires a triggering illness or stressor but if someone is celiac it is because they inherited the genes for it from one or both parents.
  6. While pot can help the pain you really need to become gluten free. You are risking a lot and pot can't help keep the autoimmune destruction at bay. I did use it for years for the reason you are but it didn't keep all the stuff you see in my signature from occuring. Please become compliant with the diet it could save you from a lot of other problems. edited...
  7. Have you gotten her a new toaster only for her use? Also as previous poster mentioned cutting boards, colanders, scratched pans etc that have been used for gluten items need to be replaced for her food. Has she eliminated gluten from her toiletries, makeup, shampoos etc. If not she should. It is also not uncommon for us to get CC'd especially early on. Some...
  8. Since celiac is an autoimmune disease continued exposure can lead to a number of different things. Lymphoma, gallbladder disease, liver disease, cancer of the intestines, thyroid problems, arthritis, ulcers and other stuff. The antibodies can attack pretty much any organ. I am glad to hear that she is concerned about your health and is helping you to try...
  9. I was one of the lucky ones also. Of course I only usually have one or two cups of coffee in the morning. Even one cup in the afternoon will keep me up into the night. I think folks that drink it or drink caffinated beverages for the whole day might have more trouble but I'm not sure. Someone could always try cold turkey and if they find they get a headache...
  10. If you have DH you have celiac even if you don't have gut symptoms. You can not safely eat wheat again at any point in time. DH can also show up at any age from infancy to old age.
  11. Just in case you end up distracted because you long to stop in keep some Kinnickinnick doughnuts handy. Welcome to the board. Ask any questions you need to and I hope you are feeling great soon.
  12. It sounds like the diet is helping you. Good to hear. About that lunch, the people are not going to have access to your medical records. If it is easier to just say you are celiac then do so. Or you could just say you have food allergies and then change the subject. Try not to worry about what others think your health is more important.
  13. While the two genes you were tested for are the most common celiac associated genes they are not the only ones. If you are going for an endo you really need to be back on gluten, at least 3 slices of bread worth a day. Even then you could have a false negative on testing. If you are now gluten free and feeling better and going back on gluten makes you sick...
  14. When I did my doctor guided elimination diet he chose foods I rarely ate as a starting point. For me it was turkey, sweet potatoes, plain white rice, peas, pineapple and cranberry juice as the only beverage other than water. No tea, coffee, soda, condiments, butter or spices other than salt. After two weeks I was allowed to add 1 item, in pure form, at a...
  15. I think it would be a good idea to make sure your shampoos, conditioners, lotions etc are gluten free for at least a couple of months or until your next checkup and blood test. Anything that gets on your hands can get into your system either through your mouth or rubbing your eyes or nose. Also go with whole foods for the most part if you are not already...
  16. There is nothing wrong with looking for other issues while she is on the diet trial. Being gluten free will not effect the testing for other problems.
  17. Bring those treats even though he is saying not to. I think your doctor has the right idea in waiting on the growth hormone inquiry. There is a good chance he will catch up it can just take some time. If you haven't seen any growth after a year gluten-free then do consult about the issue of giving him the hormone.
  18. Encourage her to try the diet for 3 months or so strictly. It is a good idea to also eliminate dairy at least at first. We have a lot of small intestine and if the doctor only biopsied in that one spot damage could have easily been missed.
  19. I hope you had a great birthday and that all went well for you.
  20. You want to ask your doctor for a full celiac panel. You do need to be still eating gluten for the test to have the best chance of being correct. If your test is positive your doctor may want you to have an endoscopy so keep eating gluten until that is done if your choosing to have one. Both blood and biopsy have a rather high rate of false negatives so after...
  21. My total IGA has never been tested to my knowledge. I suspect it is at normal levels though since I haven't even caught a cold since I was diagnosed.
  22. Celiac is not an allergy it is an autoimmune disease. The reactions are very different. Autoimmune means the body attacks itself where an allergic reaction is a histamine reaction.
  23. You have had positive blood work. The choice to endo is up to you not the doctor. If you go gluten free before the endo the results will be a false negative most likley. There are false negatives seen for some even with a full gluten diet. If you can stay compliant with the diet without the endo then go gluten free. If you need an official diagnosis then...
  24. I'm sorry in advance if this sounds a bit harsh but how happy is she going to be sitting by your hospital bed while you get treated for something that could have been avoided if you had been strict with the diet? The results of continued exposure to gluten for the sake of a few restaurant meals could be dire. Can't you eat safely at home and then go out and...
  25. What do you order when you eat out? If you get something like steak or chicken just ask them to cook it seperately in a clean pan and add a baked potato. Don't be afraid to speak up and be very clear about your needs. If you tell them you have a wheat allergy it will be easier than saying gluten free. Once you find a place that has cooked for you without...
