ARCHIVED Need Your Opnions
ravenwoodglass replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry for your loss. This will be a tough time for your family and they likely wouldn't be concentrating on what you are or are not eating. Celiac is nothing to be ashamed of and if bringing your own food will keep you safe then it shouldn't be an issue. However if you are really uncomfortable bringing something safe to the restaurant you could eat something... -
ARCHIVED Thai Kitchen Products
ravenwoodglass replied to JBaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do you have problems with soy? There are only a couple of their products I can have because almost all have soy. -
I feel this is what is likely. Since celiac requires a triggering stress or illness Lyme disease could well be the trigger for some of us. Treating the Lyme will not 'cure' celiac though. Once the disease is triggered it is there for the rest of our lives.

ARCHIVED Can You Have Celiac With Negative Blood Test, But Good Results On Diet?
ravenwoodglass replied to Ox on the Roof's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I went to my new GI doctor a couple of years ago I asked him about the tests. I had been blood tested over and over and always came back negative. The GI said that some of us just don't show up in blood tests and I would have been "one of those celiacs diagnosed by autopsy". He said he always tells folks that have negative tests, including the endo,... -
ARCHIVED Avixis Solution
ravenwoodglass replied to Mexican Trailrunner's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What is mentioned here is what happens with myself as far as my hairloss goes. In addition to gluten I am also both intolerant and allergic to soy. Even a tiny bit of either will cause my hair to start falling out. It takes me about 3 or 4 months to notice any regrowth after a good gluten or soy injestion. I also have to be very careful to make sure my shampoos... -
ARCHIVED Type Of Endoscopy Sedation...should I Do It?
ravenwoodglass replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have had two endos both done with colonoscopies at the same time. I also have a resistance to many meds and the first combo was done with the 'twilight' drugs and because my large intestine is twisted it was not a pleasent experience and they were not able to complete the colonoscopy and I had to have a lot more sedation for them to finally get me out enough... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Not Gain Weight?
ravenwoodglass replied to hunter6009's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was the heaviest I ever have been before diagnosis although a lot of it was fluid. The first couple months on the diet I went from a size 12 to 16 to a 4. That was eight years ago and I am holding steady at a size 2 to 4 which is a normal weight for someone my height. I do put on a few pounds in the winter when I am less actice but not enough for me to... -
ARCHIVED Kettle One Vodka
ravenwoodglass replied to lischro's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For many of us distilled gluten grains are safe but not for all. If you have been gluten free long enough to heal and are feeling well then you could go ahead and try it and see if you react. Or you could go with a potato vodka. I am someone who reacts to distilled gluten and have no issues at all with the potato vodka but a wheat derived vodka will bring... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Quit My Job!
ravenwoodglass replied to Rowena's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I would start looking for a different job where your talents and work ethic will be appretiated. -
ARCHIVED Symptoms
ravenwoodglass replied to glufreecali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is not unusual at all for us to have a bout with depression or anxiety after a glutening. For me it is the first symptom to appear and hits the day before the D does. Gluten is a neurotoxin for some of us and it seems you are in that group. It should lift soon. -
ARCHIVED Help! I'm In The Mosh Pit!
ravenwoodglass replied to lpellegr's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I would get another ticket with a seat and let your son invite a freind to go along and join him in the mosh pit. Just be sure to make clear where to meet after the concert is over. -
ARCHIVED Testing After Dieting?
ravenwoodglass replied to happybfree's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Whether you are gluten intolerant or celiac the treatment is the same, the diet. Gene testing can be interesting but it can also be confusing since many doctors only test for 2 of the associated genes and there are at least 9 and some research is showing as many as 28 associated genes. If your symptoms resolve the doctor may diagnose based on your recovery... -
ARCHIVED Any Sites Or Literature To Easily Explain To Family Members?
ravenwoodglass replied to TPT's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could have them come here and ask any questions they need to or just read the posts. If you go to the home page there is info on safe and unsafe ingredients and the disease in general. The NIH also has some good information on their website. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Store-Bought gluten-free Shampoo And Conditioner
ravenwoodglass replied to srfjeld's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most of the time I use Garneir Nutritioneste. I use their shampoo and conditioner and also their skin care line. They will clearly label gluten ingredients. Until I developed a soy allergy I used the organic Giovanni line. Their smooth as silk conditioner is great but the soy allergy makes me itch to much to use it anymore. Suave and Dove will also clearly... -
ARCHIVED Who Survived Thanksgiving?
ravenwoodglass replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My Thanksgiving was peaceful, too peaceful with the kids, well young adults really, in another state and unable to come home. I had a great dinner though. I made a chicken and used Grainless Baker stuffing mix to stuff it. Since I really love stuffing and have missed it greatly I was really pleased how good the gluten-free stuffing tasted. I also made mashed... -
ARCHIVED Went To The Hospital Last Night
ravenwoodglass replied to jess-gf's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Are those instant grits from a gluten free facility? I would think the chance of cross contamination would be high if not, but I could be wrong. You are also very new to the diet and it takes some time for us to heal. Are you avoiding common CC issues like using the same toaster as you did before you went gluten free, have you changed out cutting boards and... -
ARCHIVED Cognitive Challenges & Career
ravenwoodglass replied to gifree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It can take a long time for the brain to recover. Don't lose hope as you may find that in a year or two you realize you have come much farther than you thought you could. Do keep being strict with the diet and the suggestion to supplement the B vitamins is a good one. Often the progress that is made is such a gradual process that you may not realize that... -
ARCHIVED Tried The Tinkyada Pasta
ravenwoodglass replied to TPT's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also cook Tinkyada for less time than the package says. As others do I cook it for about half the time and then check. My preference for pasta is a rice pasta put out by Thai Kitchen. I use the angel hair the most often it cooks in about a minute and a half and I have even just put some in a cup of broth and put a lid on the cup and it 'cooks' up in just... -
ARCHIVED I Made Yucky Bad Stuff.
ravenwoodglass replied to Juliebove's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
With a lot of stuff you can wing it measuring but usually with baked goods you are better off measuring your ingredients. One thing I have seen with many gluten-free baked goods is that I always need to leave them in the oven longer than the recipe states. Do you have an oven thermometer? If not you may want to pick up an inexpensive one and see if your oven... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Mom's Dementia Issues
ravenwoodglass replied to TombRaiderShan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I do agree that she should be seen by a doctor. You may want to contact her regular doctor and let them know of your concerns if you don't think she would bring them up at a visit. It would be a good idea for her to get her antibody levels run as well as vitamin and mineral panels and you might suggest that to her, and while the doctor is seeing her for that... -
ARCHIVED Good Ways To Challenge Soy?
ravenwoodglass replied to StacyA's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Perhaps tofu? -
If it was a distilled gluten grain you could be one of us who reacts to distilled gluten. Not all of us do. Your tummy could also be too sensitive for any alcohol. As far as being fine for a week taking the drug, well some of us have delayed reactions and if the amount of gluten in the drug was not a high amount it could take a bit for the antibodies to build...

ARCHIVED Are Blood Tests More Accurate If Done More Than Once?
ravenwoodglass replied to Ox on the Roof's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It depends on the person. I was tested over and over and never came back positive. Some of us just show false negatives on the tests. Have you tried the diet yet? Also if you are in the US you have a legal right to copies of those test results. If you post the results here someone might be able to help. Sometimes tests are not as negative as doctors fell... -
You may want to talk to your doctor about discontinuing the meds. It sounds like there is something in at least one of them that your body doesn't like. Were you able to check them and confirm that they are all gluten free? Being gluten free should take care of the IBS symptoms, what the dicetel is prescribed for, and the stomach pain that you were given...

ARCHIVED Today's The Day.
ravenwoodglass replied to TPT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Be sure the derm does the biopsy properly. The biopsy needs to come from skin next to the lesion not the lesion itself. Once you are done with all the celiac testing you choose to do then give the diet a good strict try for a bit and see if it helps.
