I agree. The best thing you can do is learn about a company's gluten free labeling policies. Kraft and Unilever are good labelers for example. Hormel labels a lot of their gluten-free items and other companys are starting to do this also. I do wish all companies labeled for gluten CC but you will learn which companies are risky as far as that goes. Going...

ARCHIVED Totally Confused
ravenwoodglass replied to dragon's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes it could be normal. For years I had symptoms sporatically as far as tummy issues went. In my instance I might have stomach pain but only had D every few days for years although it did eventually become an after every meal thing. How long before your testing is done? -
ARCHIVED If One More Person Says....
ravenwoodglass replied to adab8ca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Go ahead and scream at them. You didn't get sick overnight and you won't heal overnight. You may also have some withdrawl for the first month or so. You will heal but it will take some time. Some of my neuro stuff resolved pretty quickly, like in a couple months but some stuff took a lot longer. Nerves take time to repair. -
ARCHIVED Test Help.
ravenwoodglass replied to VOZDUK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In addition to the conditions Skylark mentioned TTG can also be falsely positive in some other instances so make sure those have been ruled out also. From what I understand the new anti-deamidated gliadin peptide is the best test so far. Open Original Shared Link Tissue transglutaminase antibodies or TTG Since tTG had been first described as the autoantigen... -

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Wedding Menu Ideas?
ravenwoodglass replied to twinkle-toez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For the punch reception you could put out plates of different cheeses or antipasto and a variety of gluten free cracker. A chocolate fountain with sliced fruit would be yummy. There is a lot you could do for the main menu that would be gluten free. Chicken, fish or steaks can all be done gluten free. Steamed veggies and baked potatoes could round out... -
ARCHIVED Test Help.
ravenwoodglass replied to VOZDUK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It likely means you are still getting gluten somewhere, IMHO. What is your typical diet like? Are you going with mostly whole unprocessed foods and avoiding restaurants? Is your home gluten free and if it isn't have you got your own new dedicated toaster, condiments, butter, pnut butters and jelly etc? I take it by your spelling you are in Europe, are you... -
ARCHIVED Nuts
ravenwoodglass replied to hawkgirl98's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had issues with some nuts. Do you live near a Wegmans? They label gluten-free foods and some but not all of their nuts carry the circle G. You have to look for it as sometimes one size is safe but the same nut in a different size package is not. When I called to ask why they said that was because they get them from a different producer. Nuts in the... -
If he has a postive blood test and relief of all symptoms on the diet then you really do have a diagnosis. There is also a risk of false negatives on the biopsy. In addition if your son has been gluten free he would need a gluten challenge for at least 2 months before the biopsy. A reaction to the challenge is also diagnostic. If your ped has diagnosed him...

ARCHIVED Birkett Mills
ravenwoodglass replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You should be able to find it in some of your local stores. It could be in your health or organic food section or in some places in with the cereals. You could try calling around to some places or calling the company directly to see what stores in your area might carry it. If you can't find it locally give me a PM and perhaps I could pick some up and ship... -
Celiac disease is not an allergy it is an intolerance. But that doesn't mean that folks can't have both. You really should get a celiac panel done before you go gluten free. If you suspect you also have an allergy to gluten or wheat you could also have allergy testing done but the celiac screening and the allergy tests are testing for different reactions...

ARCHIVED Celiac & Lymphoma ?
ravenwoodglass replied to cassP's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes your father should be tested. If you are diagnosed all your first degree relatives need to be tested. Your brothers and sisters and both Mother and Father and your children if you have them, even if they seem to be symptom free. -
ARCHIVED Possible Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to fed up's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I second what Skylark told you. Get tested now before you go gluten free. There are some of us that are false negative with testing so after the testing is finished do give the diet a good strict try no matter what the results. It does sound like your in the right place but don't go gluten free until after your tests are done. -
ARCHIVED Hair Loss
ravenwoodglass replied to naiiad's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is hard at first because there is so much to look out for. It will get easier with time. Do be aware that wheat free is not always gluten free and many items that say wheat free are not safe for us. They can have CC issues or barley or other ingredients that are a no for us. I hope your feeling better soon. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge?
ravenwoodglass replied to Steviac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What I was trying to say is there may be more than one type of antibody other than the anti-gliadan that is now looked for and that at times they may be concentrated in organs other than the gut. This is seen in folks like myself that are seronegative celiacs with significant brain impact. I wonder if that may be the case with others who have more impact... -
ARCHIVED Celiac, Bacterial Overgrowth, Or Ibs
ravenwoodglass replied to DawnK31's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Keep eating gluten and get that celiac screening done. Hopefully the tests will show if you are celiac although false negatives are not uncommon. You could also see a dermatologist who is familiar with DH and have the areas next to your skin lesions biopsied to look for the antibodies. A diagnosis of DH is a diagnosis of celiac. I think you have a wise... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge?
ravenwoodglass replied to Steviac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the antibodies can and do travel to areas other than just the gut. We see that with DH when the antibodies are found in the skin. The antibodies can also travel to and attack the brain, thyroid and other organs. We have a lot to learn about celiac. I think it is possible that there are different antibody types or that the tests are just not sensitive... -
ARCHIVED Hair Loss
ravenwoodglass replied to naiiad's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You have to get serious about the diet for your hair to grow back and to stop falling out. Even if you don't feel a reaction is 'severe' and I do consider mouth sores, D, cramps and feeling sick more than a 'mild' reaction by the way, you are keeping those antibodies active. You need to get a dedicated toaster for you gluten free bread. You cannot use the... -
ARCHIVED Swelling In My Abdomen
ravenwoodglass replied to dragon's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Bloating is really common for us. I don't hink there is going to be much that you can do about it while you are still doing the challenge. Hopefully once the testing is done and you go back to the diet it will resolve quickly. When you go back gluten free you may want to drop dairy for at least a little while also to heal fastest. -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Frequent Bathroom Urges
ravenwoodglass replied to Silverfyre's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You mentioned being tested for other allergies but have you been tested for other intolerances or tried eliminating things that are common for us to be intolerant to? Soy, eggs and casien would be the most common ones. If you don't want to do an elimination of them you could get tested for them through Enterolab. I didn't realize the continued issues I was... -
ARCHIVED 3 Years On, Still Sick.
ravenwoodglass replied to up late's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How strict are you with the diet? If you are still having DH flares that would mean you are getting CC'd somewhere. It also sounds like you may be ataxic which would also likely make you very sensitive to CC. Could you possibly be getting glutened from CC in either your processed food, your pet's food, cooking gluten for others or your toiletries like shampoos... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Testing In Relatives And Children
ravenwoodglass replied to bincongo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is advised that all first degree relatives of someone diagnosed be tested. For you that would include your sisters, brother, mother and father if you are the diagnosed one. For you DD that would mean her siblings and both you and her father. 6 months after I was diagnosed we tested my children and they both showed positive in blood tests that prompted... -
Do talk to your doctor alone. Hopefully he will be knowledgeable about celiac and be able to educate your family. If your Mom is diagnosed she should have been told the whole family needed to be tested before they go gluten free but perhaps her doctor didn't tell her that. I lived through an abusive childhood and teen years and it is rough. In the US there...

ARCHIVED Birkett Mills
ravenwoodglass replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am lucky enough to live a few miles from them. They are my choice for buckwheat products. I buy their Pocono line. I even use their buckwheat hulls in pillows and as a mulch around my trees and flower bed. Absolutely no CC risk with them and good products. -
ARCHIVED For People With Gi Issues / Acid Reflux
ravenwoodglass replied to MarkR555's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Your post could be helpful to many that are in the early stages of healing and still having problems with Gerd. Thanks for posting the University of Maryland link. One thing to keep in mind, from that link is this: "Slippery elm has no serious side effects. Because it coats the digestive tract, it may slow down the absorption of other drugs or herbs. You...
