ARCHIVED New Here - Sad And Overwhelmed
ravenwoodglass replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know you feel overwhelmed right now. It's going to be okay. It is a hard adjustment to make for many and you can use the time while you are waiting to see the GI to learn all you can and get ready for the changes you will need to make. Celiac is something that can often pop up. Usually it appears after a stress either emotional or physical. For many... -
I am so glad to hear that he is doing better. Yea they have never to my knowledge tested my Vit D levels. I do know that since I started taking it a month ago my moods have been better and a toe that I broke back in Sept that just wasn't healing is finally pretty much pain free. The D3 along with calcium and magnesium seem to have really made a difference...

What your describing does sound like DH. I was often covered in it as a child, my Mom was told it was poison ivy even in midwinter. I once got what was most likely poison ivy on the top of the blisters I always had that was a real mess. I never got it in my mouth and throat, although my Mom did fear that would happen, especially when I got it in my eyes...

ARCHIVED Lower Left Side Pain With Lump
ravenwoodglass replied to Crystal Brown's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Whether the prep had gluten or not I really can't say. In some the flavorings that you add may not be gluten free but the active ingredients before you add the flavors should be. I also became very ill from the prep but for me it was the 'pills' that they had me take after I got cleaned out with the GoLightly, what a misnomer that is. Sometimes I wonder... -
ARCHIVED Lower Left Side Pain With Lump
ravenwoodglass replied to Crystal Brown's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I just wanted to give you an additional note on the contrast in the barium solution that you drink. In most cases it is not gluten free. You need to ask specifically for your doctor to order the gluten free solution. It will be a clear solution and thin not thick. Do mention your reaction to iodine each time you are tested, they will most likely not be... -
ARCHIVED Reintroducing Dairy Into Diet
ravenwoodglass replied to runnerkat's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your tolerating yogurt okay try adding in a hard cheese like cheddar. If that is well tolerated after a couple of weeks then add in some of the wetter cheeses, perhaps american or mozzarella. The same villi that are damaged by celiac produce the enzyme to digest lactose so if you have healed enough you may be okay with dairy again. -
I am glad to hear things seem to be improving. You need to avoid barley, rye and oats also not just wheat. One important thing though is that for the derm to be able to biopsy you need to have an active lesion. If no lesions are present when you see him you may want to ask if you can get a quick appointment if you have another breakout from accidental injestion...

ARCHIVED Residual Symptoms Or Slip Ups?
ravenwoodglass replied to Beloved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes eating out and getting CC'd could cause that and even a full blown glutening. It is very easy to get CC'd especially in fast food places. -
ARCHIVED Inflammatory Issues/arthritis/tendonitis/bursitis?
ravenwoodglass replied to mimommy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It sure is. I am not ashamed to admit that brought tears to my eyes. The pain I dealt with daily and the fears produced in my children by their watching the pain that eventually was too great to hide did a lot of damage to them. To say nothing of what it did to my life. Many of us here live with that companion far too long. It will help makes things... -
ARCHIVED How Soon After Eating Gluten Do You Have Breakouts?
ravenwoodglass replied to tomcallahan's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
When I was new to gluten free I would get a breakout within hours of ingestion. I found after a few years stictly gluten-free, in other words, once the antibodies left my skin, it takes a lot of gluten for me to breakout and even then it is very minor. I was very strict from the being and I stopped getting new lesions really quickly. My old lesions also... -
ARCHIVED Inflammatory Issues/arthritis/tendonitis/bursitis?
ravenwoodglass replied to mimommy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When you said the MRI showed little what was it that showed? It wasn't by any chance what they call UBO's was it? Those are diagnostic of celiac in some other countries but often thought to be nothing here. Reading your description of your pain is like reading my own prediagnosis. I can't say the same will happen for you but I have been pain and med free... -
ARCHIVED Lower Left Side Pain With Lump
ravenwoodglass replied to Crystal Brown's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you ever had a colonoscopy done or GI study with contrast that you would drink? Is this something that was always there and has just gotten bigger and more troublesome or something that has cropped up in the last few months? The advice to supplement and try eliminating other possible sources of reaction is a good one. If you haven't already I would... -
ARCHIVED Corn Flakes
ravenwoodglass replied to Nicole H.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some of us do react to gluten grain distilled vinegars alcohols. If it is a concern for you Heinz distilled is safe as it is not derived from a gluten grain. I use Heinz ketsup and their white vinegar with no problems. -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
ravenwoodglass replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think we are pretty much in agreement. I do always say to get the panel before doing anything else and if fact think it should be something that all children should have at age 4 and again at puberty and it should be the first thing done when folks have symptoms. The one thing I think that a lot of doctors forget is that the panel does have false negatives... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
ravenwoodglass replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It would also most likely not give any relief for another condition that wasn't being caused or complicated by gluten to begin with and of course there could be other conditions that are present with celiac. As far as it helping other conditions, well sometimes it does because those conditions may be rooted in the gluten issue to begin with. As we learn... -
ARCHIVED Any Experiences With Osteovalin?
ravenwoodglass replied to chasbari's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think your making the right choice. Glad I was able to help. Also glad I found that link, which I have bookmarked as it may come in handy for the future. Something you may also find helpful is to ask your doctor for a referral to a physical therapist. They can be really helpful in evaluating and forming an excercise prescription that can help you... -
ARCHIVED Medical Marijuana For Symptom Control
ravenwoodglass replied to raisin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is a very valid point that actually applies to a lot of drugs. Also I think when folks use it to relieve symptoms they don't always consume like the folks that are doing it to get 'high'. Most people think of the 'pot head' sort of thing where folks smoke themselves into a stupor and just sit around all day. When folks are using it as a medicine they... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
ravenwoodglass replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What is wrong with putting a child from a family with a history of celiac and issues suggestive of it on the diet? If the diet helps them you have the answer, if it doesn't then look elsewhere. It is well known that the rates of false negatives for children is even higher than it is for adults. If the history is there and the symptoms are there and the... -
ARCHIVED Any Experiences With Osteovalin?
ravenwoodglass replied to chasbari's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't have experience with this but I am giving you a link to the PDR section on supplements which will let you know the side effects and cautions for the components of the drug. Do be aware it seems that all three major componets of this have Diarrhea as a side effect for some people and there is a drug interaction warning for at least 2 of them. . ... -
ARCHIVED Medical Marijuana For Symptom Control
ravenwoodglass replied to raisin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There is actually quite a bit on the net about it. It can be quite helpful it seems for a lot of things. Although it wouldn't be appropriate as a substitute for the diet it could help when folks were glutened. In states where it can be prescibed it appears celiac is one of the things they prescribe it for. Unfortunately even in states where the state... -
ARCHIVED Multiple Food Allergies--how To Determine If I Have Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to Lady TS's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The only thing I have to add is from my own experience. It took a long time for me to get diagnosed with celiac. The biggest clue the allergist had was that when he did the scratch tests I was allergic to 98 of the 99 substances he tested me for. That was his big clue that he was dealing with a celiac although he didn't tell me at the time. He put me... -
ARCHIVED Any Experiences With Osteovalin?
ravenwoodglass replied to chasbari's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are things you can do that bypass the drugs, I would try those first. Weight bearing excercise on a daily basis and supplementing with vit D3, calcium and magnesium would be my first step. Also if you are newly diagnosed your system will start absorbing nutrients after you have healed which also should help. -
ARCHIVED Dr. Wakefield Trial (mmr/autism Possible Link)
ravenwoodglass replied to AndreaB's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
In this section yes any subject can be discussed as long as folks follow board rules. Thanks to everyone both pro and con on this issue, it has been an interesting thread. -
Yes the biopsy is a simple in-office procedure. You need to have an active lesion. They take the biopsy from the skin next to the lesion not the lesion itself. It is done with a local anesthetic and the amount taken is very small. Usually they use a little punch instrument. I just had a bandaid afterwards and no discomfort to speak of at all when I...

ARCHIVED Neurological Only Problems
ravenwoodglass replied to neurobeard's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might be surprised about the blood test. If your insurance might cover it you may want to go ahead. My children were not very far advanced when they were tested, they were screened because they had finally figured out I was celiac. If you are prepared to follow a wheat free diet for a few months you might want to consider taking the step to gluten...
