Yes, unfortunately it is quite possible she was and was never diagnosed or that she was diagnosed in childhood and was thought to 'outgrow' it. This was common thinking for quite a bit. You should have all first degree relatives tested, your sisters and brothers, father, sons and daughter etc. It is just a blood test to screen so you do need to remember...

Your doctor has a lot to learn about celiac. You have found a great place for links to research and such to educate after your immediate health concerns are dealt with. By the way welcome to the board, you have found one of the best resources there is for support and education.

It sounds like you just did a gluten challenge, with the dim sum most likely. Reactions can be as severe as yours but usually would not continue so long without reglutenings. Has anyone done a stool sample on you? If not demand one Monday morning. You need to be checked in case you have some sort offood poisoning like salmonella. In which case you will...

ARCHIVED Cheerios
ravenwoodglass replied to chasing4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is a cereal called Perky O's that is available. I really want to try their version of Apple Jacks but my store only gets the plain. If you can find them they are gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Vitamins

I would get sublingual B12 tablets. They bypass the gut the same as the injections. They are absorbed through the membranes in your cheek and gum. Most of us need B12 supplementation because the same area that is damaged in our guts is needed to produce something called intrinsic factor. Without that our gut can't use B12 from food or supplements. B... -
If you are recently diagnosed with celiac you should give yourself a good year before undergoing any 'surgical' type procedure. It can take a long time before hair re-growth is obvious. Some with celiac have autoimmune alopecia or hair loss due to vitamin and mineral defiecits or the stress of the illness and this may resolve on the gluten-free diet. The...

I have wondered about how to educate them as well. My feeling is the AMA should step in and help things change. I have often wondered what would happen if a bunch of us late diagnosis folks, the ones still well enough to travel, got up in front of congress with 2 piles of records, pre and post diagnosis. I don't know about the rest of us but I know I...

ARCHIVED Pregnant And Eating Gluten
ravenwoodglass replied to jlynn's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you had a postive blood test you need to be gluten free. The biopsies are really hit and miss but the blood test when it shows a postive is pretty conclusive. One reason to be gluten free is that if your baby carrys the gene, and you have a difficult delivery the baby can have the disease triggered at birth. I am pretty sure this happened with my... -

I know this doesn't really answer your question but I get this if I get barley even in trace amounts. Could you be getting trace amounts somewhere? Some of the dairy replacement milks use barley and don't disclose it so that might be one place. Some supplements that are labeled gluten free also use barley grass. May not be the cause for you but thought... -
ARCHIVED Is Cayenne Pepper Ok When Having celiac disease?
ravenwoodglass replied to motif's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know what you mean! I had a PT rub some cream on me with it as main ingredient. Even ice packs couldn't cool the burn. The skin was red and tender for days. Ouch. -
If you do a search on a good search engine, I use google the most, and you put in the words 'colon cleansing dangers' you will have a lot come up. I agree that these are dangerous for us as are 'liver and gallbladder cleanses'. Most of us have a leaky gut and a lot of 'stuff' that the normal uncompromised gut will exclude we will absorb. They also can...

ARCHIVED Is Cayenne Pepper Ok When Having celiac disease?
ravenwoodglass replied to motif's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Interesting, thanks for the link. Not something I could ever try though, my reaction to cayenne is not pretty even though not gluten related. I knew it was quite helpful for joint and muscle pain but will have to check it out more throughly it's other benefits sometime. -
ARCHIVED Rainbow Lite Vitamins

I know I wouldn't touch it. I think we had a discussion on barley grass not too long ago, you may want to do a search to help you make up your mind. -

As long as it is for sure gluten free it shouldn't be a problem. Although I do have to ask, what about this would strengthen the heart? Just curious. -
Has it really been a year, seriously...time sure does fly. Glad to hear you are doing well. The green actually got toned down a little from the original change, if memory serves me. Lot's of cool changes on the home page too so be sure to check it out.

ARCHIVED Which Relatives To Test?
ravenwoodglass replied to ChemistMama's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is recommended that all first degree relatives be tested, so that includes both parents. If either of you show positive then all your first degree relatives need to be tested, your brothers and sisters, Mom and Dad etc. Be aware though that not all folks who need to be gluten free show up on blood work. People that have symptoms, anything ranging from... -
ARCHIVED How Much Of B12 And Magnesium?
ravenwoodglass replied to motif's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the tabs that you have are sublingual they will be very tiny, they are meant to dissolve under the tongue not to be chewed or swallowed. Liquid works okay also as long as it is for sure gluten-free. Amounts in the sub linguals will vary but don't be scared by what seems like a large amount. Most of us need the supplements because our body is not able... -
ARCHIVED Question About Flax Seeds & Peanuts
ravenwoodglass replied to 1GreysFan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just a quick note, apples are often waxed with a lacto-resin. For people that are lactose or dairy intolerant this may bother them. -
ARCHIVED Is That Proof I Have celiac disease?
ravenwoodglass replied to motif's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac can definately cause the problems you are having. And excluding gluten, feeling better and then getting ill when adding it back is a very valid way of telling you have a problem with gluten. For some of us it is the only way we can be diagnosed before we ae almost dead. You should get some sublingual B12, it will help with the tingling and other... -
ARCHIVED I Do Not Know If I Can Handle This
ravenwoodglass replied to bisja's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You need to try and get some protein in you to help to regulate those sugars. Nut butters, eggs, a handful of nuts or a shake with hemp milk or a protein powder and fruit will help. Try to snack with a carb and a protein frequently during the day. Gluten free pretzels with a handful of nuts or a hard boiled egg. Cream of Buckwheat is very easy to digest... -
It certainly wouldn't hurt him to be gluten free and might very well help guite a bit as far as his general strength and immune system. As to the issue of MM and celiac what I would do is do a seach with the terms 'multiple myeloma and celiac'. There will be a lot that comes up. From what I understand when we are compliant with our diets many of our cancer...

ARCHIVED Clothes And Frustration
ravenwoodglass replied to radgirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Another thing I find helpful with pants and jeans is before I put them in the dryer I grab the hems and waistbands at the seams and stretch. Then I try to remember to remove them before they are totally dry. It seems to help for me, at least with my jeans, it seems the seams often 'shrink' or wrinkle. My Mom sewed a lot and she always made sure the fiber... -
ARCHIVED Mushrooms
ravenwoodglass replied to elisabet's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link She got it from the above link. I had a hard time finding the quote and had to read it a couple of times. I think the gluten reference may come from the lengthy talk about ergot fungus but I could be wrong. There are also more than one form of gluten, corn gluten for example, so perhaps that is what is being spoken about. ... -
ARCHIVED Anxious & Morbidly Hopeful
ravenwoodglass replied to WhimsiKay's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Please be aware that up to 30% of celiacs or gluten intolerant folks will show a false negative on blood testing. Be sure to give the diet a good strict try after you have completed all the testing you desire to do. The truest test of whether or not the diet is needed is the diet itself. -
One additional note, if you were screened through blood work and are producing antibodies there is a really strong chance that you are not really 'silent'. Those antibodies are already working against your organs if they were shown in the blood panel. Some of the damage can be so varied that is it hard to recognize as gluten related until the damage is...
