  1. The symptoms and the reaction time can vary from person to person and even change after some healing takes place. For me the skin stuff used to show up very quickly, like the peeling lips and DH blisters (my DH now takes a few days but I am 5 years into this), within hours my balance will be affected and within 24 hours I am hit with a short lived but severe...
  2. He is really beautiful. Congratulations and enjoy.
  3. Yes, I called the company and they emailed me a response stating that they are working on 3 new cereals that will be out in January. If you still have them at your store buy as many as you can. The email didn't say the 3 new ones would be gluten-free but I sure do hope so. I'll have to brave and look for the Rice Chex, I just hope it doesn't have soy...
  4. The real sensitive in my family avoid any 'dark' sodas regardless of how gluten free they are said to be we both react. There is also the possibility that the soda in the machine will have a different and possibly gluten filled formula that the bottled stuff does not have.
  5. My DH and I are both smokers. We have both been glutened by cigs. He didn't believe me when I said they were a source but humored me by switching to American Spirit cigs (no additives whatsover, just tobacco). (Note I am not in any way affiliated with the folks that make these, I just smoke them.) A couple of months after we switched he ran out and he...
  6. Brian put it so well I don't have anything to add other than agreement.
  7. I admit I am a chicken. I am also heartbroken that Wegmans has discontinued thier gluten-free cornflakes with strawberrys. Please if any of the supersensitive folks try this stuff, post back and tell us how it went. I am very leery of CC issues as I react really badly and hope this will really be safe.
  8. Hopfully you will have the same result I have. I have been gluten-free now for over 5 years and don't know if it is a coincedence or not but for the last 4 I have seen a great decrease in my subs and dislocations. I used to have to relocate my ankles every morning and was often woken up by them dislocating. That almost never happens anymore. I have noticed...
  9. I can't take iron so I will leave those suggestions to others but I want to ask about the issue of not having anyplace to cook. I am taking that to mean you don't have access to a kitchen. You may want to consider picking up a rice cooker or a crock pot. Perhaps that could give you a way to cook something without a stove and reduce your chances of CC from...
  10. Wasn't judging, sorry you took it that way and were offended.
  11. I use Estee Lauder MagnaScopic which I confirmed was gluten-free with the company. I do worry about mascara because the eyes are lined with mucous membranes and gluten is absorbed by the mucous membranes anywhere they are on the body. The nose, the eyes, the mouth, in women the 'personal' areas, these are all areas where gluten can be absorbed into the...
  12. For some of us celiac can impact the function of the kidneys. When glutened we will retain water. That can cause a temporary increase on the scale until our system clears out. If you wear rings the easiest way to know if that is what is going on is if they are too tight after a glutening. Make sure you are getting lots of water it will help clear things...
  13. Just a quick note, I was close to death before I was diagnosed and could barely move from my arthritis. It wasn't until 5 years after diagnosis that I had my genes tested, long after all my autoimmune disorders went into remission. After the results were back and I started researching I discovered that if I had been gene tested before my celiac diagnosis...
  14. You need to do better on your diet and be sure that when you are having D that you also use a barrier method to prevent an unwanted pregancy. Better to be safe than sorry as they say. If you are taking the pill for a medical reason other than contraception you should talk to your doctor about this issue.
  15. Thanks for posting this. Perhaps they had the stuff labeled as wheat free even though spelt is actually a form of wheat.
  16. Oh gosh yes, in fact for some of us the neurological effects are quite severe and present for a long time before GI stuff is more than an annoyance. There is an article on this sites home page this month on the connection between celiac and depression but there is often other impacts as well. If you do a search on neurological and celiac, depression and...
  17. Something you can also do in some baked goods is replace the fat with applesauce. This works really well with stuff like muffins and pancakes.
  18. If you only quit the vitamins with the gluten 3 days ago you are still experiencing the effects. Be sure to check everything else that use on or in your body. It does take some time to heal but it took us a lot of time to get as sick as we needed to be to be diagnosed. Hang in there it will get better.
  19. Yes your shampoos and lotions and makeup can make a huge difference. Gluten in these products can keep the autoimmune process active. I used to use Giovanni's line, they are really nice and gluten free but they do have soy which is a problem for me. Suave will clearly label gluten ingredients as will Dove. Garnier Nutritioneste has some that are...
  20. I would check those nonfood items first before I underwent loads of other testing. Celiac disease can effect the functioning of a lot of other organs, including the thyroid and liver. Delete the gluten from all the things that come into contact with your body, that may be enough to end your problems.
  21. Please forgive the correction but up to 30% of us even with total villi destruction will show negative. As one who was in end stage celiac before diagnosis with constant negative blood work I thought it was important to clarify. I agree with the others about the need to stay on the diet regardless of the results of the blood test. The endo was conclusive...
  22. Have you eliminated nonfood sources of gluten? Toiletries, shared toasters, lotions, craft and home repair compounds, clays and glues for example. Did you check every med and supplement, OTC and Script, you are on with the maker? Is your house gluten free or are you living with folks that eat gluten? If so you may be getting CC'd. Do you eat out without...
  23. Except that my ataxia began in childhood my story is similar to yours. I am a celiac who does not show up in blood work. That delayed my diagnosis for a very, very long time. I am also going to suggest Enterolab testing and a trial of a strict gluten-free diet, including dropping dairy for a couple of months along with the gluten. Also keep taking that...
  24. I actually got some of the Gluten Ease for my DH. I thought since he was always taking risks it might be a good idea. I really regret doing it now and there is no way to turn the clock back. It did seem to help his GI issues a little bit but does absolutely nothing for the neuro ones. I suspect that it may help with GI issues to a small amount but it...
  25. Here is a short list of some of the fruits and their glycemic index. If you do a google search you can get a lot of info on GI and many lists. There are a lot of real good fruits that are low GI. Cherries Low 22 Grapefruit Low 25 Apricots (dried) Low 31 Apples Low 38 Pears Low 38 Plums Low 39 Peaches Low 42 Oranges Low 44 Grapes Low...
