  1. If you google 'asymptomatic celiac' you will see how serious this is. Celiac is a spectrum disease effecting much more than just the gut. In googling you will find lots of articles related to the ill effects that 'silent' celiac causes. Celiac can attack the thyroid, brain, gallbladder, lymph system and much more. The choice whether to save and improve...
  2. I would get your records and copies of those tests and the results and get a second opinion. Flattened villi are the 'gold standard' for celiac diagnosis. I don't know why with that result your doctor would say it was negative. If your doctor gets upset that you want a second opinion take all your records and run to someone else.
  3. One thing that you may find helpful is getting some sublingual B12. The foggy drugged feeling could be a side effect of the drug but it may also be from your bodies inability to process B12. B12 is needed for proper nerve function and may help you a great deal. Once you go gluten free you may want to talk to your doctor, after your depression issues...
  4. I have a hard time with gaining weight because I really never feel hungry and have had years of negative conditioning to food. Something that has helped me a great deal in the last couple months has been using Royal Jelly. I started it as a pill less form of B and other vitamins but found that for some reason it really increases my appetite also. If you...
  5. I use either a buillion cube or Pacific gluten-free chicken broth and then throw in some of the Thai Kitchen Thin Rice Noodles. They can be found in the Oriental section of many markets. I like them because I can just bring my cup of broth to a boil then throw in a small handful of noodles and cover the cup with a plate for few minutes an the noodles are...
  6. You could try Ghee. It is straight clarified butter and it is gluten, soy, casin and lactose free. I find it works okay for cooking, but I have never tried to bake with it. I don't like it for stuff like toast with cinnamon though. I give coconut oil shortning a big thumbs up also for baking, yumm for apple crisp.
  7. I also suffered for many, many years. Depression and ataxia were my first symptoms at around age 5. For me the depression cleared within 3 weeks, although part of those three weeks the depression may have been also from withdrawl. The only time I get depressed now is when glutened or going through something that it is normal to be depressed about. When...
  8. I don't know if I would even share this with her right away. You can get carbs from sources other than grains. Fruits and Veggies have carbs as do things like wild rice (actually a grass not a grain if memory serves me today ). Many of us do have issues with soy so it is a good thing you are eliminating it. It may make a big difference eating unprocessed...
  9. She should be okay and it is wonderful that she has someone as caring as you to look out for her. You have come to a great place to learn how to make that home gluten free from day one and the many, many things we have to look out for. I hope she is feeling better soon, also even if her villi are totally gone when they do the endo there is every reason...
  10. Have you contacted your doctor and told him of the reaction? That is diagnostic in itself. If you have been gluten free did your doctor know this when he did the blood tests? It would have produced a false negative. They are looking for an antibody reaction and if you stop eating gluten you stop producing the antibodies and the test will be negative. ...
  11. Welcome, you have come to the right place for info and support. If you are happy with your doctor other than the gluten issue then you could stay with him. You might even print out some of the stuff from links on the home page that could educate him a bit. You don't need his permission to be gluten free, after all. You may find that you really don't need...
  12. Wonderful news!!!!!!
  13. If you have had positive blood work then you have a reaction to gluten. It is your choice whether you want to biopsy or not. The biopsies have also been know to be falsely negative. You have 22 ft of small intestine and if damage is patchy or in an area that the scope can not get to then you will have a false negative. You can also be told the test is...
  14. Just my opinion but I would wait. Not because it might effect the test results, if you are still on a full gluten diet it shouldn't, but because many contain other flours and stuff that your system is not used to eating. That can be problematical for some of us. It also is a good idea when first diagnosed to go with a minimally processed diet for a bit...
  15. Chances are good that this is a hernia as your doctor has previously told told you. The spasms that are caused by the intestines attempts to rid you of the gluten that has been injested can be very violent. I am giving you a good link to lymphoma info. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph system, it would cause swelling in the lymph glands not to my knowledge...
  16. You are quite right, and as many most likely know I am one of the people who do react. I would suggest having one or two drinks three or four days in a row when not consuming anything else that is risky, and watching for a reaction. For those of us who do react to gluten grains they often have an overintoxicating effect and can give some really douzy...
  17. If this is something that you are noticing in conjuction with a glutening then the chances of it being lymphoma are really pretty slim. Many of us do get swellings, they can be from gas in the intestines or muscle spasms or any number of things. If your doctor has been on top of this, and it sounds like he has, I would not be overly concerned. Lymphoma...
  18. What happens if the biopsy shows up negative is that you go gluten free anyway. The skin rash will take a while to resolve totally and even small amounts of gluten, even in your toiletries will keep it active. It should however improve quite a bit as soon as you stop reinjesting gluten. The truest test of whether you will benefit from the diet is doing...
  19. What genes did they test for? If they only tested for the two celiac genes that are recognized in the US and you carry one of the 7 that are newly recognized, they will tell you that the gene test is negative. I was a full blown celiac who saw lots of stuff go into remission on the gluten-free diet but the gene test I had done 5 years after diagnosis showed...
  20. Yes there is. Gluten is absorbed through mucous membranes, including those in the nose and mouth. Even a tiny amount that accidentally gets into your system will keep the autoimmune process going. For those of us who lose hair it is often this autoimmune process that is more at fault for the loss than poor nutritional uptake but both can be a factor.
  21. Not as bad as from a pet bird in the house but yes. I gave away the bird but I do still feed the outdoors ones. I fill the feeder outside, wear disposible non powdered gloves and wash when I am done. Oh and I don't fill on a windy day without a face mask. If I do all that I have no problem.
  22. I think you have gotten some excellent advice already and I would be furious also. If the husband to be does not want to stand up to his mother the marriage is in trouble before it starts. He should tell her that the place SHE wants is unacceptable and then make reservations in a venue that is safe. The reception dinner is for the bride and groom first...
  23. Welcome to the boards. Your PA was less than worthless. To put it bluntly. Celiac is actually very common but some folks stop learning the minute the diploma is handed to them if they can get away with it. I would suggest that you spend as much time as you can here and that you throughly check out the home page and other sites like www.csa.org. Then...
  24. Please do let them know, maybe if they hear from enough of us they will bring more of them in. I haven't even been able to get the Gorrilla Munch there now for weeks. Lots of those 'rock' cereals though that have to be soaked for an hour for my poor celiac teeth to handle them safely. GRRR I did get brave and bought a box of the Chex, now I just have...
  25. I am also on a limited budget, it can be hard. Here are my basics for the week. Rice, organic and unfortified or Minute Rice Ground beef stew beef Raw unprocessed chicken Frozen veggies, no sauces potatoes, celery, carrots and onions pnut butter and jelly I go for the ones that have the least ingredients or say gluten-free gluten-free lunch meats...
