  1. *Smacks forehead* Well thanks, that worked wonderfully. I'm still adjusting to my new MacBook, and it's funny how many times I can't figure something out, only to be told the way to fix it is the simplest thing ever. I've used a PC my entire life up until about two months ago, and I can't ever seem to figure out what's the deal with this silly...
  2. Joe's Jeans. They're amazing. They have just enough give, and they don't over stretch. When I wash and dry them, they shrink back up, too. They're a bit on the pricey side, so I usually buy mine at Nordstrom Rack, where they can usually be found on sale for $100 a pair, as opposed to their higher retail prices. I've heard they can be found at TJ Maxx, too...
  3. Yesterday I loaded a new avatar to this site. When I go into my settings, it shows the new picture, but whenever I make a post, it still shows the old one. I'm puzzled. Anyone know why this is happening?
  4. I love Rice Chex so much, I was thrilled when I found out I could eat them again. I'm now hoping Rice Krispies will go gluten-free as well, so I can make some Rice Krispies Treats again. I miss those things!
  5. My parents were a lot like that at first, too, for that exact reason. They didn't want me to commit to some crazy hard diet when gluten might not *really* be the culprit. They didn't want me tied down to this pain in the butt disease. In the end, reason won over and when they realize how much happier and healthier I was on the gluten-free diet, they became...
  6. I've never had their spinach dip, but even if it does turn out to have gluten, I'm sure you could find a recipe somewhere and modify it so that it's gluten-free. I've found that Kinnicknick English muffins toast up with a nice crunch, so you could always make toast out of it and use it with the dip. I do love the Cheesecake Factory, though! They're...
  7. Do you mean food in the dining halls or like, groups/clubs? I suppose in both cases it really does depend. I go to the University of Colorado and while the dorms supposedly provide special diets, at least when I was in the dorms, they did a really horrible job. The people I knew at the time who couldn't eat gluten were really only given special accommodations...
  8. The big ones for me include getting rid of: Migraines Anxiety/depression weight loss dark circles under my eyes eczema fatigue always feeling "sick" I feel like these days, I'm just functioning overall a lot better. There were a lot of little things that stopped as well, like bleeding gums, sinus infections, cramps, hair loss... I can't even...

    ARCHIVED Taco Bueno

I feel your pain about craving Taco Bueno. I used to eat there all the time as a kid (long before I knew anything about celiac), and have basically been dying for Bueno every since I moved away from Tulsa, OK when I was 13. It used to be that whenever we went back for a visit, my mom and I would make our first stop there, haha. Aren't the owned by the same...
  11. Ugh, I just avoid Starbucks, anyway. I'm not a huge fan of their coffee to begin with, and thankfully where I live there are loads of local shops that have much higher quality coffee at lower prices, not to mention locally baked gluten-free pastries. The one thing I'll say for Starbucks is this: when I was visiting London last March, my boyfriend found...
  12. This doesn't help on the day-to-day living, but on special occasions PFChangs has a wonderful gluten-free menu (Ask for it). The Shanghai Street noodles and the Chang's Spicy Chicken .. are my favorites!

  13. Hey guys! I live in a sorority house and don't have a kitchen, so on weekends I've had to get creative/risky with the restaurants in my area. I'm still pretty limited, but I've been surprised to find that one restaurant I have had a LOT of luck with is the local Jimmy John's sandwich place. They do a breadless lettuce wrap version of all their sandwiches...
  14. Noodles used to be one of my standby choices for restaurants, but I've given up on them. I ate there a few times and got sick in August, and came to find out that they had changed their gluten-free menu. I'd ordered the pasta fresca (which used to be on the gluten-free menu) but was no longer, but no one bothered to tell me that even though I asked them to...
  15. ^Thanks. I'm going to double check online and make sure everything's set. ETA: I just logged on and followed your directions, but the only thing on the drop down menu was the "add emergency contact info" option. :/ Gotta love this sort of crap.
  16. I just called NWA again, and the lady I talked to this time told me there are gluten-free meals and made reservations for me to have them both ways within 5 minutes. I couldn't believe how easy it was the second time around. I couldn't find the number they were looking for, so instead they looked me up by name and flight and everything is all set now. Last...
  17. How do I do that through their website? I bought the ticket through the student travel association, so I didn't use their website to purchase the ticket. When I tried to use their website to find any info on gluten-free meals, I couldn't find any information anywhere. If it's not very filling, I'll still want to bring my own stuff in addition. I eat kind...
  18. Hey guys, sorry I haven't been around much. I've been pretty busy with school! I thought I'd pop in and ask some questions because I'm going to Hong Kong to visit my boyfriend over Thanksgiving break. I'm pretty worried about the food situation. Actually, I'm nervous anyway because I've never been abroad before and never been on an airplane alone. Ahhh...
  19. Hey there, I haven't been around in a while but I've been busy with life/work/etc. Thought I should come back, as I'm really starting to miss the support of others who can relate to being gluten free. My basic story in a nutshell is that I'm going to be living in a sorority house this year. Food during the week shouldn't be a problem. Our chef is awesome...
  20. Well, I think it can affect your social life if you let it. The hardest part for me was sitting in my room alone eating boxed/frozen gluten free meals rather than eating with friends in the cafeterias. It just felt lonely. However, I could still find a lot of restaurants that were safe for me to eat at (call ahead! The host might not have any idea what...
  21. I've been glutened at two regular Chili's in the past couple of months, so I would never bother with there airport junk. Seems rather horrifying to me.
  22. Well, lots of peoples' bloodwork comes back negative or only "slightly positive". I've read that it can depend on a lot of things... how long in advance one was actually eating gluten, how much gluten was actually taken in, how long one was gluten free before the challenge, genetics... I've read a few times that in rare cases some people just don't produce...
  23. I really think it depends on where you go... whether or not it will really be safe. I've heard excellent things about some schools and really terrible things about others. The school I go to is basically useless in the gluten free department. The only dorms with kitchens are upperclassmen dorms, but a few buildings have their own communal kitchens. Mine didn...
  24. Thanks guys for all the input. Guess I'll just wing it for now and cut back on dairy pretty significantly to see what happens. If I find it's not enough, I'll try to cut it out totally. I agree that soy is probably one of the harder ones. I'm also a Chinese food fanatic, and I like soy milk, tofu, etc. I suppose there is always rice milk. I think...
  25. Okay, so I've been gluten free for about a week and a half now and am starting to get vary curious about the whole soy/dairy free thing. I hear often that people should go dairy free in the beginning, and I've also read a lot suggesting that avoiding soy for a while is also good. I guess my question lies in how much is too much, or should it be totally...
