  1. Hey there! I'm in college, I can relate I myself am fairly new to the gluten-free thing myself, and I know it can be really, really hard. Emotionally its hard enough, but with all of the pressures (money, peers, time, etc) in college, it can be so much harder. Hang in there! First of all, go to facebook. Right now. There are several facebook "support...

Yeah, definitely this guy is a jerk. Well, the endoscopy is on Wednesday. When I originally scheduled an appointment, this was the soonest I could get in to see ANY GI. The wait for others in town was much, much longer. At this point it will be easiest just to go ahead with this biopsy and find a new GI afterward. I'm 20, but I DID sign paperwork releasing...

Well, the problem with my bloodwork is that it all turned up negative. If it had turned up positive I probably would not have gone through with all of this biopsy business in the first place. It might not be a bad idea to see an alternative practitioner. I'll look into it.
  4. I was under the impression that positive bloodwork IS good enough for an official diagnosis. Usually the problem with bloodwork is that people with negative bloodwork can still have celiac, so getting the biopsy in that case makes sense. But if the bloodwork is positive.... what's the point? I can relate, though. I myself was gluten free for about three...
  5. Hmmm... I've been using the mineral wear powder for a few months now. I don't have the ingredient list anymore but I read everything even before I started worrying about gluten and I thought it was just a bunch of minerals. I didn't have any issues with it even once I started gluten-free. I use it every day. I've got some weird bumps on my skin now, but I...

In the US doctors fax stuff to each other all the time, so long as they have the patient's permission. My regular doctor did the original celiac panel and had those results faxed over to the GI. Prior to the biopsy, I have to do a couple of stool samples. Since his office is out of town, they told me to take the samples to a lab in my city, and that lab's...

Yeah, I know... Not hereditary, my butt! Actually, once I've found a decent GI, my younger sister plans to be tested as well. She has quite a few of the symptoms herself and is another one of those people that gets tested for everything and the doctor just tells her she's "fine". Now that I'm going through all the testing, she's starting to suspect she may...
  8. Really? Is it just the rice stuff they use for pad thai or is it actually actual pasta? I heard a while ago that you could request their pad thai pasta (gluten-free) and have any other sauces and toppings put on it. To me it sounds kind of weird, since pad thai is gummy and mushy, and then put like, marinara or cheese all over it, LOL. Last time I was...

Well, again, I'm not really sure what other options I've got at this point. I need the diagnosis, and it could take weeks to get an appointment for a biopsy with another doctor. Weeks that I would continue to have to be eating gluten. I've been talking it over with my dad, but he's still somewhat set on me having this biopsy. So is my mom. It's the closest...

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to reply. The situation is that I kind of need an official diagnosis. I know I have celiac. My grandma knows I have celiac. My family and boyfriend all know I have it, too. The problem is, I'm going to be living in a sorority house next year and I need to have one in order to request special food from the cook. Our...
  11. I'd like to point out that just because colleges are supposed to do something about meals for people with such strict dietary restrictions, they don't always follow through very well. I go to University of Colorado at Boulder, and finding gluten-free food is pretty difficult. I know a girl who was diagnosed shortly before the school year started, and they...

I finally got in to see a GI last Tuesday. I guess it went alright, but I went home feeling kind of set off by some of the things this doctor said to me. In the appoinment I explained all of my symptoms, that my grandmother has celiac, and that when I tried going gluten free for three weeks, ALL of the symptoms went away. I went through the exam...
  13. Hmm... I'm not really sure... periods, celiac, and birth control are all things that seem to be so variable between everyone. It would make sense that period issues would go along with celiac- if one is already malnourished as a result of celiac, then not getting periods would make sense. Depo Provera is such scary stuff. I've only talked to a couple...
  14. I'm really glad you posted that. I was wondering about this, too. Seems this entire school year, I'd get random low-grade fevers and generally feel awful... pretty much all the time. Especially the last few months. They disappeared when I stopped eating gluten, and they're back now that I'm eating it again for the biopsy.
  15. I didn't end up calling the dermatologist today. I keep looking at my ONE new blister like I'm insane: it probably is just a pimple. My dad's convinced it's not, my sister is convinced it is a zit. Besides, I was too tired to drive. My dad's planning on calling my GI tomorrow to see if maybe something can be done about the situation. This clearly isn...
  16. I know exactly what you mean. My boyfriend and I had even started arguing about our dismal sex life before I tried going gluten free. This was wrong, that was wrong, and it all boiled down to my not accepting any of his, well, advances. I felt like there was something wrong with ME and I couldn't understand why I didn't want sex. I was really worried, too...
  17. Hey all. I posted a couple weeks ago about my initial stint with being gluten free, how celiac runs in my family and I decided to try it to see if I would feel better. I got back on gluten in time for my regular check up with my regular doctor. I'd been on gluten for about 5 days and when I brought up my concern about celiac with her, she decided...
  18. I definitely, definitely noticed a change. For a few months prior to trying gluten free, things were kind of simmering down and not much was happening. Worse was that I couldn't even summon enough desire to initiate or do much of anything in that respect. My boyfriend and I have been together for quite a while and I wondered if it was just things "settling...
  19. Wow... I keep hearing two totally different things about Amy's. I've been a little wary of pre-prepared foods in general, but I keep a few of the Amy's meals around for when I don't have time to cook or when I need to bring along something that I can eat to a friend's house. I think I'm pretty sensetive to gluten but haven't reacted to anything from Amy's...
  20. I'd never thought of a connection before, but I've had ongoing sinus infections for basically as long as I can remember. I got my first in 6th grade and it's been downhill ever since. I used to do what jerseyangel suggested. It really does help, though I don't do it as often anymore because the water always gets stuck in my sinuses and comes rushing...
  21. I'm going to have start bringing my wheat-free soy sauce to sushi bars... *Sigh* I got spoiled in my college town, they all had tamari on hand if you asked. I went to a sushi restaurant last weekend and they had none, so I had to eat my sushi plain, haha. Bringing your own tortillas is another great idea, I hadn't thought of that
  22. When I initially went gluten free to see how I would feel, I was living in a dorm. The food in our cafeterias was AWFUL. Completely unsafe for someone dealing with this sort of diet... eating out was infinitely easier for me at the time. I suppose the lesser of two evils. I've realized that most people are completely unaware of how little gluten it takes...
  23. For years I've had symptoms of depression and issues with anxiety and irritability. Last year it got so bad I ended up having to withdraw from a semester at college and come home. Interestingly, I always felt like it somehow wasn't me. I wasn't sure what WAS me, because I'd been unhappy for so long, and I could never really put my finger on what was wrong...
  24. Eating out is tricky, at best. I've had some good experiences and bad... in my college town, there's a sushi bar where everyone's helpful and if I ask they can cook me something special (usually rice, beef, and veggies with some tamari). They've always got tamari on hand and they take it seriously. On the other hand, my boyfriend and I went out just yesterday...
