  1. Oooh! I feel your pain on this one. I think it would be an awesome idea, I hope they seriously consider it!
  2. ^So then, in other words, celiacs, stay out of trouble!! It's funny that you mention it though, I was wondering about this the other day.
  3. Oh!! I just thought of something... in situations like this, sometimes they prioritize for people with the most need. Have you let the power company know of you dietary restrictions and that you need to be able to cook and store food? I don't know how it works, but maybe if they know that you can't just run to pizza hut and grab food like everyone else...
  4. Oh my goodness... Have you tried getting some canned goods? Tuna, sardines, and simple rice crackers? Other than that I'm totally at a loss. That's really, really awful and I hope they get out there sooner than you expect. Good luck with everything, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers!
  5. Welp, it got worse this afternoon and the cramps and dizziness came back full force. I ended up in urgent care where they ran all kinds of tests and hooked me up to a hydration IV while everything was being checked. Long story short, I don't appear to be anemic, have blood sugar issues, or have an infection of any sort. They didn't seem to think it was...
  6. Thanks for the response. Today I'm actually feeling much, much better. I still have my regular gluten symptoms though, of tiredness, D, brain fog, etc. I definitely don't feel flu like at all. I guess this rules out food poisoning or virus... It was just so weird. I'm still getting dizzy if I stand up too quickly, but it hasn't been nearly as bad. I...
  7. This isn't a recipe, but Gluten Freeda's makes a preformed gluten-free cookie dough that tastes just like the real thing. My favorites are the chocolate chip and the sugar cookies.
  8. When I went gluten-free, I grew a couple of sizes. Even then I wasn't completely gluten-free (in college, in a sorority house, couldn't cook for myself) and now that I'm totally gluten-free things have gotten a bit bigger again. The first time around, I noticed a lot of soreness/tenderness. I never mentioned it to my doc, but I have a friend who says...
  9. Earlier this afternoon I went to lunch with a friend at a local restaurant. They have some gluten-free options and advertise gluten-free bread on their menu, but it's still a burger/pizza place where CC is absolutely possible. I ordered a burger, no bun, cooked in a pan instead of on the grill with a side salad. Later on I went to work, and at around...
  10. I always walked on my toes. My dad says it began when I was learning how to walk and he was so tall that I had to tip toe in order to hold hands with him when I was learning how to walk, haha. I had to consciously break the habit, but I think I still do it sometimes.
  11. It's funny, a while ago we were talking about this at work. Scary as it is to think about, I'm not really that concerned. The economy (and other things) will always experience ups and downs. Still, I think it's a good idea to have a few things on hand "just in case". Maybe not enough for a few months or even a month, but enough in case there's say, a...
  12. I shop at King Soopers (which is part of the Kroger brand) all the time... they're right across the street from me. I've never bothered asking about a gluten-free list or anything, but compared to other stores in my my area (Albertson's, Safeway), they've done a MUCH better job of having gluten free STUFF. Granted, they don't put the "gluten-free" label by...
  13. A lot of the Giovanni line is gluten free... except for the "golden wheat" variety I used them for two years solid and loved it. They may have a lighter sulfate in them somewhere, but it's listed in the middle of the list and I never had any problems, whereas traditional body washes and shampoos really make me itch so bad. I just checked, and my Tea...
  14. A lot of people have already posted great advice, but I just wanted to say hang in there! A lot of us here, myself included, don't have a diagnosis. Like you, celiac does run in my family and I tested negative on both the biopsy and the bloodwork. Like someone else has already pointed out, just because you tested negative in the past doesn't mean...
  15. Ugh, that's so scary. I'm so glad the Chicago Tribune is bringing a bit of light to this topic, though. That's huge! I've been wondering about some of the Whole Foods stuff for a while. It's a little bit misleading, as some of the stuff is marked gluten-free, but then you read the label and it may not necessarily be gluten-free. For a while, one of...
  16. WOW. I've never had someone ask if they could bring me separate butter for bread I may have brought. In fact, no matter what, without fail, the server ALWAYS puts the bread right in front of me. I have to laugh because usually this occurs at fairly nice restaurants where they otherwise "get" the gluten thing. It happened to me the other night when I was...
  17. I remembered some of my own tips that I swear by, figured I'd give them to you: -Look very closely in the meat sections at the grocery stores. Things that are close to expiring (within 3 days or less) often have a "managers special" sticker on them and are dirt cheap. I once found these huge veggie and steak kabobs for $3.00 because they expired in...
  18. I haven't had good luck at Outback, either. It could just be a regional thing, but the last time I went I definitely got sick, and I got the impression that they just don't get it. I asked for a gluten-free menu, and was kind of bored by it. It seemed really halfway to me. Honestly, you can't even have the cinnamon apples in the cinnamon apple dessert...
  19. Well, that sucks. I'm really disappointed with a lot of chain restaurants like this, anyway. They just don't give a rat's butt, if you know what I mean. Loosing a few celiac customers means nothing to them, because they can make so much money off of everyone else. I just go to a local sushi joint that's totally accommodating if I want a seafood fix...
  20. I've vowed that my own bridesmaids, when the time comes, will be wearing beautiful dresses. I WILL NOT HAVE UGLY BRIDESMAIDS. LOL. I can understand why you feel hesitant to be part of it. It's not particularly special to you and you're not close to her. Typically, I think the maid of honor does things like throw the bachelorette party, helps oversee...
  21. Oh man, school is so frustrating right now. I totally understand. My family can't really help me out much, either, and I work full time just to pay my bills. Our tuition wasn't hiked *yet*, but my financial aid was cut drastically this year thanks to the credit crunch. Needless to say, it's been a rough semester and I totally understand where you are coming...
  22. Bingo! It's probably the imitation crab. That stuff makes me SO sick. Years before I knew anything about celiac I knew fake crab made me feel queasy, so I stopped eating it. That stuff is nasty. A lot of it does have gluten as well, and I learned the hard way to ALWAYS ask the sushi chef whether the "crab" is real or imitation. Once or twice I've been...
  23. That's huge! I'm glad you found someone who is caring and GETS it. I think that's very rare! Aren't chiropractors awesome? I've seen several of them over the years and I always find them to be some of the most open minded medical professionals out there, and usually their concern is genuine and they have the most holistic, practical, best advice for just...
  24. UGH... here's the not so good update: I went of the BC pills, and while I feel less glutened, I'm on my period again already. I was just on it less than two weeks ago. I'll have to make an appointment with my doctor sooner than I thought to get this sorted out. Also, I told my boyfriend I was withdrawing from classes, and he freaked out. I've already...
  25. You're really supposed to continue eating gluten normally straight up until the endoscopy. Meaning, 3 or so slices of bread a day. Even then damage doesn't necessarily show up, the biopsy isn't completely accurate. Damage is patchy, they may not catch it. If you think gluten is the problem, you might just pass the endoscopy all together and put her...
