  1. Funny you mention the itchy knees and eczema. My eczema was horrible before going gluten free, and I had started to get the worst itchiness on the front of my knees. It was not a normal eczema rash, just like you described. It was painfully itchy, though. The gluten-free diet has really helped me control both.
  2. Wild Oats was started in Colorado. They used to just be a small(ish) independent chain but were bought out by Whole Foods about two years ago. I'm in Colorado, and the Wild Oats that stayed open often have both Wild Oats and Whole Foods brand stuff. It's basically just like a Whole Foods these days, so you could certianly try them. I don't often go, as...
  3. I've never had issues from grain based hard alcohols. My understanding is that the distillation process removes gluten. I'm super sensitive, so I'd know if I got glutened (especially considering how much I do drink when I drink. Shush! I'm 21 and kind of in college!) When I've been glutened while drinking, I've come to the conclusion that it has to...
  4. Don't apologize! It actually addressed a few things I'd never even considered before. It's definitely worth checking into. I'm planning on scheduling an appointment with my regular doctor back home soon so I can figure out a new birth control option and I'm going to ask about some of this stuff. I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to reply...
  5. Texas Embassy has a menu, and it was alright. I say "alright" only because I was born in Texas and am a true Mexican food junkie. It wasn't spicy enough!! They were nice though, and I loved the concept. Unfortunately, I everywhere else I went I just had to try and pick my way through the menu and order something that "seemed" safe. I was only there for...
  6. Hey! My parents live up there! I love Muggs and Beau Jo's, but I'd never heard of the Rustic Oven. I'm REALLY going to have to try that next time I'm in town. I'm always looking for new gluten-free pizza options! I'd always been curious about Spoon's, too. Now I know I'm really glad you posted this, because honestly, half the time I go there I...
  7. I also wanted to add: In my case, my bloodwork and biopsy both came back negative. My GI thought I was crazy. He only told me to go gluten free because I told him my regular physician says I shouldn't have it. He kind of gritted his teeth and said "well, if you don't have celiac, maybe it's an intolerance." You'd be surprised how many medical professionals...
  8. Oh my god. What a way to get a free upgrade! I once threw a tantrum at a California Pizza Kitchen when they told me I could only eat two of their salads minus the dressing (seriously, $11 for freakin' lettuce?!) and I had to watch all my friends eat bruchetta and freakin pizza. I cried. I broke down. I'm STILL kinda embarassed when I think about it.
  9. You know, my understanding is that a positive blood test is good enough. There's really no such thing as a false positive but there's a such thing as a false negative when it comes to celiac bloodwork. If the bloodwork came back positive two different times, that's a pretty strong indicator that she has celiac and NEEDS to go gluten free. Like the others...
  10. Ugh. I'm glad I trusted my gut instinct about those things. My boyfriend loves them, and I got REALLY mad at him for eating them at my computer the other day. I know they're supposed to be gluten free, but they terrify me. I hope your daughter feels better!!
  11. I just want to say I can very much relate! I'm a point where I'm also struggling to get healthy again and I've been loosing weight and dealing with depression, too. Everyone has given you some really excellent advice. I'm considering the "cave man" diet, too temporarily. It's a frustrating thing, isn't it? I hope you get better soon!
  12. I have actually had my thyroid checked... it was about a year ago. They said it was a bit swollen but the results came back "normal". With the new standards, I wonder if it really wasn't normal. It's definitely worth checking into again, as I've kind of been wondering about this. They said I did have a lot of symptoms that could indicate thyroid problems...
  13. Thanks SO much for these suggestions. I am actually seeing a counselor right now, and she agreed that taking some time off from school is the best thing. So that's one good thing. I've really just been trying to take it easy. I've been wanting to do a lot of things to make me feel better, like attend some free meditation classes, go consignment store...
  14. Long story short, I've had the semester from erm, down south. My financial aid was cut (thanks, credit crunch!) and I ended up working full time to try and pay bills WHILE trying to go to school full time. In the end stress and depression and anxiety caught up with me and I've withdrawn from all of my classes to focus on work. I think some of the emotional...
  15. Aww, that's so sweet!
  16. Mine prefers the Gluten Freeda's brand chocolate chip cookies to the real deal, and he also likes gluten-free pasta more than wheat pasta. He doesn't feel like he's giving up anything, and I know he's being honest about that.
  17. I had the worst time in the dorms... but I was not officially diagnosed and didn't have a doctor's note to use yet (it was about 2 months before I moved out of the dorms, so at least it was short!), and our food services weren't that helpful even to the diagnosed celiacs I knew. They'd mark up a menu and highlight the "safe" foods, which were very repetitive...
  18. Stop feeling guilty. Seriously. It won't get you anywhere. DO count your lucky stars that you've been blessed with someone who is as supportive as your bf is, because many people aren't as lucky as you in that respect. When I first went gluten-free, my bf was pretty supportive as well, and I too, felt kind of guilty. You know what? Two years later...
  19. That's so scary! I wonder if they would have to mark fruits that they use this kind of coating with. I mean, wheat is a major allergen and the FDA is supposedly making everyone mark this kind of stuff. But it's not like most fruit has labels to mark it on... What exactly is that website though? I don't speak French so there's no way for me to understand...
  20. I'm 5'5, and I think at my lowest I was down to about 105 lbs. Everyone thought I had an eating disorder, and I looked horrible because of how sick I was. I had dark circles under my eyes, I was tired, depressed, etc. I kinda did look like I had some sort of disordered eating. It was AWFUL. I had people pull me aside often and ask if I was "alright" or if...
  21. I have to admit, also being in colorado, I'm much the same way. I LOVE that King Soopers does have a pretty big selection, and they're right across the street from me. Convenience is huge. I also go to Vitamin Cottage far more than Whole Foods. I think the atmosphere is more personal and I get sick of the crowds (and ridiculous prices) of Whole Foods. Ironically...
  22. Being in Colorado Springs, you may have heard of Deby's Gluten Free in Denver. They've been pretty successful, and I think they've been around for more than a few years. I remember when a good 7 years ago or so my grandma (who lived in another state) ordered their bread by mail because she liked it so much. Part of the reason for their success, while...

    ARCHIVED Ugh, Why?

So true. I know that not everyone is supportive and I think I'm extremely lucky that my family, friends, boyfriend, and even HIS family are so supportive. I don't have much to complain about at all. Ugh, I know all about trying to be a "good" daughter in law. Things are very different in my family and in his. I grew up with lenient parents...

    ARCHIVED Ugh, Why?

We don't even have a garage... lol we share a tiny one bedroom apartment. And one car, lol. Unfortunately, she's one of those ladies that is *very* easily offended. She takes everything personally, and I mean everything. If it were anyone else I'd have no problem letting them know not to bring any gluten into the house. Believe me, I'm very outspoken about...
  25. Also, why not bring some of your own gluten-free dessert? I'm a dessert junkie... I make all kinds of gluten-free cakes and cookies, and those could easily be plopped into a tupperwear container and you wouldn't feel left out of the dessert portion of the meal. That's one of the toughest parts for me, so if I've got my own, I don't feel left out. If you're...
