ARCHIVED Hip Pain
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know EXACTLY how you feel! Oh the drama! My DD gets the bruised/red eyes when glutened as well. She had a bad spell a few weeks ago. 3 glutenings in 2 weeks. Thankfully none since then! Her legs and hips just seem to get the brunt of pain most of the time w/ glutening (she used to get "growing pains" several times a week before she was gluten-free). She... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free In Denver, Co?!?!?
buffettbride replied to XxKittykat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
There's quite a few options here. Are you visiting DU? One of our favorites is Noodles. They have pad thai or you can get rice noodles with just about anything you want with it. We eat at Noodles about once a week and they have always been very careful about preparing my daughter's food when you tell them gluten free (ask them to press the "allergen alert... -

DD loves rice, always has, even before Celiac (probably subconsciously because it didn't make her sick). We make it 3-4 times a week, along with risotto. I'm slowly getting the kids away from "Minute Rice" and on to some of the healthier varieties.

ARCHIVED Motrin Junior Strength Tablets
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks. She toughed it out without meds, which was probably better anyway. I just think she was sore from overexerting herself in gym class Friday. They played softball and she said she slid into home base a few times! I'm going to call the company tomorrow and verify because it would be super handy to be able to give that to her. Motrin has a bit of a... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Out Here.....
buffettbride replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not very knowledgeable in the CF arena, but I fail to see how a gluten-free diet could be bad for anyone. I mean, as long as you know what vitamins to compensate for that you might be missing with gluten products, since making our house gluten-free, we've filled it with mostly healthy, whole foods. It has been a good thing for the whole family. I fail... -
ARCHIVED Choc/pb Treats
buffettbride replied to confused's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What an awesome-sounding dessert. If hubby and I weren't starting South Beach this week (we are not celiac, our DD is, but our house is gluten-free) I would sooooooooooooo be making those by the truckload right now. Those sound sooooo goooood. I think I'll have to whip up a batch for DD as a special treat. Maybe some will jump into my mouth! -
ARCHIVED Motrin Junior Strength Tablets
buffettbride posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Can anyone verify the gluten-free status of the Motrin brand Junior Strength Ibuprofin tablets for me? DD has some leg cramps and we're out of Tylenol Meltaways and I have some of the motrin on hand. Here are the inactive ingredients: carnauba wax cellulose corn strach D&C yellow #10 FD&C yellow #6 hypromellose polydestrose polyethylene... -
ARCHIVED Favorite gluten-free Shampoo
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ooooh! That Long and Strong sound promising. That is just what she'd need. Conditioners are a booger in general because she needs a realllllly good one to keep her hair brushable. We use Dove body wash so I have no worries there--just not a fan of the shampoo/conditioner by Dove. Thanks so much! -

ARCHIVED Favorite gluten-free Shampoo
buffettbride posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I thought I had read somewhere that Herbal Essences was gluten-free but apparently I am wrong. So, time to switch it up for something surely gluten-free. I know Dove is, but I'm not a fan of that shampoo or conditioner, and my daughter (who is the Celiac) has extremely long--past her waist--hair. Any recommendations on your favorite gluten-free shampoos... -
ARCHIVED Salsa--

We use the Ortega shaker bottle of taco seasoning regularly with no problem and also use their tortilla and tostada shells. We use Pace salsa and Daisy sour cream. -

Maybe with a little more time between Coors Light and Redbridge you'll like it more. I live near Golden, CO and was just thinking how nice it would be if they had gluten-free beer. -
ARCHIVED White Cheddar Rice Cakes

We all make mistakes sometimes--no matter how hard we try. I just realized my daughter's shampoo could have gluten in it. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Reading Labels

That happened to me last week too!! DD w/ Celiac uses Crest so that is not a problem, but I read that about Oral B as well and that is what DS uses and they share a bathroom and I KNOW the toothbrushes touch the same counter and spitting and all that gluten that could be floating around. I guess I know where I'll be tonight...at the grocery store... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had A Gluten Free Wedding?
buffettbride replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There was an article about a gluten-free wedding in the last Living Without magazine. I can't recall the details, but if you could get your hands on one, it might have some resources. -

buffettbride replied to jaayimee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OK. Please ignore my Herbal Essences comment. I went to double check on the gluten-free status and as of March 2006 are not considered gluten-free. EEEGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADS. This explains a lot, though. We bought a new type of Herbal Essences last weekend and DD has been bloated and gassy and yellow-flakey-pooping all week. Stick with Dove and you'll... -

Replacing utensils and toasters are a must...and non-stick pans if scratched and plastic strainers, cutting boards, etc. Just to be safe, I'd stick with gluten-free shampoos (many mainstream brands are) and definitely chapsticks and lipsticks and makeups. Even the tiniest amounts will make you sick and damage your intestines so absolute care must... -
ARCHIVED Is It Really A Disease?
buffettbride replied to Vykt0r's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm in the "it is a disease" boat as well. My daughter, while mostly healthy when she does not consume gluten, is subject to many other issues because of having Celiac. Her immune system is compromised as a Celiac sufferer--all the time--not just when she inadvertantly consumes gluten. Do I like that it is called "Celiac Disease"? Not especially.... -
ARCHIVED Quick And Easy Recipes

We do pulled pork often. Get a pork butt roast, enough beef broth to cover the roast, a tablespoon of liquid smoke, and about 1/2 cup coffe, and let cook all day. Then, when you want to eat, put the pork on a cutting board and pull apart with forks. You can mix in the BBQ sauce of your choice. Super easy and super yummy and would go well by itself or... -
ARCHIVED White Cheddar Rice Cakes
buffettbride replied to megsbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Corn gluten is different than bad-Celiac-gluten. Sometimes you'll see corn gluten or rice gluten on products and those are safe for Celiacs. -
My daughter reacts the same way--same intensity--with a crumb as she does with a slice of bread. The only main difference we've seen is duration. The more gluten she gets, the longer she is sick and the longer the extraneous symptoms last (emotional meltdowns, leg pains). When it is an accidental thing (like when her brother handed her a grape after he ate...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Cured With Stem Cell Transplant
buffettbride replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would definitely say that is hopeful--but I can't help but be skeptic. What if that child is just experiencing the "honeymoon period" we hear about with Celiac, rather than complete resolution. I wish there were more information like that associated with this article. However, if the disease was truly "resolved" it is an amazing prospect. -
ARCHIVED White Cheddar Rice Cakes
buffettbride replied to megsbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They look gluten-free to me--might want to call the company about the natural flavoring to make sure it doesn't contain barley/malt. However, with the hydrogenated oil, they aren't exactly as healthy as you think rice cakes would be. Probably beats a bag of chips, though. -
I'm in Denver, too. My daughter sees the GIs at Childrens. Dr. Hoffenburg. We had nothing but success there, considering my daughter didn't even really present symptoms consistent with Celiac. Diagnosis in under 2 months.
