ARCHIVED High Altitude Baking Modifications
buffettbride replied to jenngolightly's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi! I'm in Denver, too and I've wondered about this also. I haven't done much baking since DD was dxd, but I have made banana bread using Pamela's baking mix. The recipe called for 2/3c flour + 1TBSP baking soda + 1TBSP baking powder. I've never adjusted it for high altitude, but I did use 3 cups of baking mix (since the baking soda and baking powder is already... -
ARCHIVED What Would You Do?
buffettbride replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Overall, the most important thing is to keep your child healthy--whether you remove gluten on your own or you choose to do so after a doctor's diagnosis. I think it would be important to get her diagnosed by a doctor and I would worry less about what it would cost so I could have a confirmed diagnosis (because that is important to me). I guess I don't... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Kids And Orthodontics? Question?
buffettbride replied to Melmelsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hmmmm. I don't know about the orthodontic adhesive (good question, though). Couple things to consider, if you haven't already... -Is there any possibility she is cheating and eating something she knows she shouldn't? (I'm not saying she is, I'm just giving a laundry list of possibilities) -Have you checked her toothpaste? Mouthwash? -Does she... -
ARCHIVED Hormel Natural Choice
buffettbride replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We buy the Hormel Natural Choice turkey lunch meat regularly and DD has never had a problem with it. Hormel is great with labeling (and I think their web site lists gluten free products as well). We use the turkey a few times a week in DDs lunch--I make her homemade lunchables w/ Glutino crackers and Kraft Cracker Stacker cheese. I haven't bought the... -

ARCHIVED Halloween Candy List
buffettbride replied to Dandelion's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I couldn't find it either. I was just thinking about this today. We were talking about Candy Corns and Peanut Butter Kisses (although those are both Brachs I think which is a not-gluten-free-friendly company). I hope it's out soon--I'm going to encourage the members of another board I'm on (it's a Parrothead thing) to hand out gluten-free candy this year... -
ARCHIVED Another Interesting Day At The Doctor's Office
buffettbride replied to Ridgewalker's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh Sarah! I'm so sorry! You and I seem to mimic eachother. My youngest son who is non-Celiac has acquired an icky cough, but no real infection. It's been dragging on for weeks though. Thankfully no medicine allergies (I'd get the alert bracelet for that). He is allergic to peanuts though. Our first 2 weeks of school with my DD who is Celiac were great... -
Our Maggiano's (Downtown Denver) has been great both times we've been. DD orders the corn rotini with alfredo sauce, steak strips, and broccoli. The chef comes and takes her order and cooks it personally each time. And I agree--an apology isn't enough. Not that I know what I'd expect, but they don't have to deal with the fallout that is gluten when...

ARCHIVED What An Awesome Weekend!
buffettbride replied to bfarnsworth0709's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I wish my Chipotle experience had been better, but we are true supporters of Noodles. For being a place full of wheat, they take our order seriously and we're becoming buddies with the manager. We're there about once a week and it's the only "fast food" we've learned to trust. I am SO glad you had a good experience. It must be such a pleasure to enjoy... -
ARCHIVED Newbie With A Craving.......reese's Peanut Butter Cup
buffettbride replied to Motorboater's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The lines aren't cleaned between the batches of miniatures and the gluten-containing candies are processed along with the non-gluten candies so the CC risk is high. -
ARCHIVED Starting Kindergarten Early?
buffettbride replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you feel your child is ready it would be a great thing and definitely worth persuing. There are other kids at my DDs school with Celiac, but they are in 7th and 8th grade (DD is in 5th). It would be nice if she had a gluten-free buddy closer by. I'm thinking if they consider your request the teacher will want to do some kind of assessment to make sure... -
ARCHIVED Chemical Depression After Being Glutened
buffettbride replied to mhansen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Short Answer: Yes Long Answer: YES YES YES YES YES YES YES My daughter is Celiac and while the GI symptoms only last a day or so, for about a week she is just an emotional train wreck who feels like the world is crashing down around her. In fact, it's one of the primary symptoms that concerned me before she was dxd because she has a very stable family... -

ARCHIVED **another Fyi
buffettbride replied to mouth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Was there any flavor indication regarding the strawberry flavors? My daughter just received some Strawberry Kiwi Liquid Lip Smacker and Squeezy Lip Smacker. I know previous Bonne Belle gluten-free lists have warned about strawberry flavors because of vinegar added. Thoughts? -

the hip pain started well before the rear-ending accident. -
ARCHIVED Hip Pain
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That is the plan. Since we had 3 glutenings in a short period of time and she seems to feel better now, we're going to keep an eye on the pain separate from glutening incidents. Since going gluten-free her "growing pain" in her legs has subsided almost completely, but if that hip stuff keeps happening without a glutening then we'll take it a step further... -
ARCHIVED Hip Pain
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You make a great point! Bandanas definitely have the potential to become trendy placemats! I'm going to the Army/Navy surplus today to pick a BUNCH. They are washable so I'm not adding to a bunch of lunchtime waste, either (one of the reason we got the Laptop Lunches as well). -
ARCHIVED Hip Pain
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thankfully she is doing MUCH better now. Hasn't complained of hip pain most of the week and no glutenings this week. I think we've made it over the "hump" of adjusting to school *fingers crossed*. I'm sending a bandana in with her every day to use as a placemat to provide extra protection of her food space. I was hoping to find some of those self... -
ARCHIVED Hip Pain
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sadly, she's sharp enough at 10 to know that Pez isn't a Tylenol. We use the whole placebo effect with both kids for as long as possible. For almost 5 years (pre-celiac) graham crackers were cookies, etc. -
ARCHIVED Hip Pain
buffettbride replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks so much! So far no fever or anything and no glutenings since midweek last week. She has complained of sore throat, but we've had a cold bug passing around our house too, so that doesn't surprise me. She's 10 (and very dramatic) so it's hard to tell with her sometimes. To top it all off, we were rear-ended driving to school/work this... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me...new To Celiac
buffettbride replied to Melmelsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is still fairly new to me too, and it is definitely overwhelming. I know I felt better about it when I saw my daughter feeling better--something you haven't accomplished yet--but you'll get there. It is a tedious process always, but it doesn't seem troublesome at all once you see what a difference it makes. This forum has been so valuable to me I really... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me...new To Celiac
buffettbride replied to Melmelsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Might you share what her daily diet is like? Pretty much anything that might go in her mouth would have to be gluten-free, including vitamins, toothpaste, lipstick, Chapstick, etc. The verdict is probably still out on shampoos and such, but I keep ours gluten-free *just* to be safe. My DD is 10 and was just diagnosed last May so we're still pretty new... -
ARCHIVED No Need To Feel Angry
buffettbride replied to FEELGOOD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My DD feels the same way about the "Disease" part. She thinks it makes her sound infected or something. Maybe it should be called "Celiactic" like "Diabetic" instead. -
We've been having a frustrating time at school the last few weeks--3 glutenings in two weeks due to not-ideal lunchroom cleanliness, etc (that is so frustrating because she hasn't been glutened more than 1x per month and we've only been doing this since May). She just seemed to be contacting gluten with her hands and then not washing them before eating. We...
