  1. We had this problem at a wedding. We had a gluten free cupcake but it wasn't a piece of the big, gorgeous wedding cake. It broke my heart. My daughter just started 3 year old preschool too. We haven't had a birthday treat to deal with yet. Unfortunately, I don't think there is much we can do about treat envy besides making sure they have a really...
  2. Anyone try it? Is it good? I'm worried about CC in a pizza place so I'd love to hear if anyone has first hand experience!
  3. How frustrating! Until you get this worked out, maybe find a back up person who could bring in a safe lunch if you can't get there in time? I like the idea of extra food in the safe snack box too. Lunch at school is yet another thing I'm worried about!
  4. Good point Kibbie. I think the only reason I'm even thinking this way is we're talking a 20 day difference. Right now my husband thinks I'm a little crazy for even thinking about this so we'll probably not worry about it. I like the thought that the older child will help prepare the school for Julia's needs before she even gets there! ...
  5. Just to clarify: I'm not "ignoring" the cut off date. I'm considering asking the school (whose cut off is actually earlier than our state's guideline, note not a mandate) for their opinion on this issue. Nor am I talking about pushing a child into something she's not ready for.
  6. I'm considering asking the school to start my daughter in kindergarten a year early so that she'll be in the same year as another little girl who has celiac. I would love her to not be the only kid who has to have special treats. Plus it seems like it would be a lot easier to get the classroom to be gluten-free if there were two gluten-free kids. My...
  7. Congratulations on your new baby! I've been reading a lot about how breastfeeding can possibly help prevent celiac so it is great that you're nursing! Other than that, enjoy that sweet little newborn, this time passes sooooooo fast!
  8. Hi! This board is so helpful!
  9. I don't know if this helps with the church daycare or not but in my daughter's preschool room the teacher has all the kids wash their hands before and after snack. They stay at the tables while eating and the tables are cleaned well immediately after snack. I don't think I would trust my daughter in a situation where those precautions weren't taken. ...
  10. I would definitely have her tested. We kept thinking my 3 year old's belly was just baby fat, even after her diagnosis, until it went away once we started the gluten-free diet. Push to have her tested. If you need to convince your husband or doctors, google the results of untreated celiac.
  11. We're going to be visiting family ~ they'll have a new baby though so we don't want to impose on them to provide gluten-free meals! I'd appreciate any suggestions!
  12. Julia has a few gluten-free things that she really loves ~ so I was thinking about buying in bulk. If you do this, - does your child ever get tired of the item before you use it all? - do you think you save money? - is it a pain to find storage? - does the product ever go bad or get stale before you use it? - where do you buy in bulk?
  13. If I were in your shoes I would consider the blood test that checks to see if she has the Celiac gene. I wouldn't want to put my rapidly recovering daughter back on something I knew was hurting her just for a test to show what I already knew.
  14. I have a love/hate relationship with celiac. I am so happy that this is all that was wrong with my daughter (we were so afraid it was cancer or something else awful) and I love that she doesn't have to be on medicine or have surgery or anything scary but I HATE that she can't just be a normal kid and I hate that she gets sick if we make a teeny tiny mistake...
  15. In our case it really did. My 3 year old was a very picky eater before we went gluten-free. Now that we've been gluten-free for only 2 months, she will try anything and likes the majority of what she tries. Before her diagnosis, she hated pasta, bread, pizza, and many other very "gluteny" foods. Julia pre-diagnosis was legendary for her picky eating...
  16. I know we won't be getting the fresh donuts this year! How about carmel apples? Maple candy? Cider? What gluten-free treats do you think are safe at the apple orchard? Also, can you make a gluten-free pie? Apple crisp? I haven't attempted making gluten-free stuff from scratch yet!
  17. That's wonderful!!!!
  18. Oops, didn't answer my own poll! 1. Since our diagnosis in mid July, she's been glutened 4 times 2. Our longest bout was 12 hours 3. 2 were my mistake when we were eating out, one was unidentified, and one was her sister slipping her a goldfish cracker 4. movies, snuggling, and pedialyte (she gets dehydrated FAST) 5. 2 months
  19. I was just curious how often other parents see glutening happening with their Gluten-free children. If you don't mind answering, please do! Sorry I'm not sure how to properly format this as a poll, hope this is okay to post this way! 1. How often does your child get glutened? 2. How long do symptoms usually last? 3. Can you always identify where the...
  20. I carefully checked the ingredients in the icecream treat never thinking about cross contamination from the scoop. My 3 year old feels miserable and I feel stupid. Any tips to avoid this or do we just need to stick with Wendy's Frostys?
  21. Those symptoms sound very similar to the ones my 3 year old had before we started the gluten-free diet. I would talk to the pediatrician about testing for Celiac (you want to have the tests done before you go gluten-free). We knew nothing about Celiac Disease, so it has been quite an adjustment. But we are so relieved to find answers and are delighted...
  22. I'm not an expert or anything but I've heard that clinical depression can be induced by stressful situations. An ill spouse and child could definitely count as a stressful situation. Try to get him in to see a counselor or at least to talk to his doctor. Maybe you could approach him in the spirit of keeping him well so that he can help you and your child...
  23. Sadly, my Kroger doesn't carry it. I sent them a feedback email about it though!
  24. Great news! I'm heading to Kroger today and will check to see if they've added those to mine! I hope so because the Whole Foods is much further away and has an awful parking lot to navigate with 3 little ones!
  25. I can totally relate to the shock! My 3 year old daughter was recently diagnosed and is also about to start preschool. She really likes the book "Eating Gluten-free With Emily." We're still figuring this all out. My daughter is feeling so much better since we started the gluten-free diet. She's almost like a different child. The best thing we...
