  1. I can definitely say that my daughter complains of aches and pains and has meltdowns at the drop of a hat when she's been glutened (and pre diagnosis) but never has these problems when she's gluten-free.
  2. All 3 of my girls get eczema that sounds like it presents just like the rash you described. We only bathe every other day and use very gentle soap only sparingly (even the baby washes and shampoos are pretty harsh for sensitive skin). As soon as they're out of the tub, I cover them with Eucerin lotion and put Aquaphor on any of the rashy spots. My...
  3. I'm sorry she got sick. If it helps at all, we bought almost a whole new kitchen from Ikea and really didn't spend that much. If you have one anywhere near you, it is worth a trip! They have very inexpensive cutting boards, colanders, utensils, kid dishes, pans, etc.
  4. I can't handle spicy foods very well. Could that be it?
  5. We did notice almost instant improvement just a day or two after my daughter's diagnosis (from the celiac panel blood test). She had symptoms very similar to your son's. If you decide to have a formal diagnosis, he will need to eat gluten until the test. My daughter was diagnosed with a very positive blood test at age 3. We opted not to have the endoscopy...
  6. I'm a vegetarian with Celiac Disease. It was easier to cut gluten out of my diet than it was to cut meat out. And by cutting out the gluten, I've been able to tolerate dairy again (I've been lactose intolerant for years). I'm so happy to eat dairy again! I do a lot with beans, cheeses (only after you have given yourself a chance to heal!), veggies...
  7. For us the benefit has been that it is easier to get my daughter's school to work with us. Will your doctor write a note that will satisfy whatever your school might need? If she will, I think that would decide for me!
  8. Thank you for your concern! Of course we don't know it will be accurate but after long consultations with our pediatrician and GI and reading everything we could find on the topic we've chosen this path as the best one for our family. We now have a pretty good idea of what symptoms to watch for (since our now 4 year old is diagnosed) and we'll have to keep...
  9. Have you considered getting a dog; they're good with crumbs! We're facing a similar problem now that our toddler (16 m/o) has joined us at the table. It is getting really hard keeping her from contaminating our 4 year old's food and my food. (I'm still giving her gluten because I want to be able to have accurate testing on her at her two year check...
  10. Bless her heart! I'm always amazed at how well kids take this news. I'm finding it all much harder than my daughter or your daughter! My 7 year old, non-celiac daughter just got two webkinz. She probably doesn't really fit the bill (too young and is only partially gluten-free) but if you're desperate, send me a message and I'll figure out her webkinz...
  11. I think it is normal and healthy to have a little anger when you're first dealing with this kind of major life change. Just my opinion!
  12. Hi! I'm glad you're finding answers for your baby! Our favorites so far are Kinninnick white sandwich bread (tastes kind of like english muffins and you have to eat it toasted or it isn't good), Glutino crackers and pretzels, Pamela's baking mix (for pancakes), Pamela's chocolate cake mix (for cupcakes), and Envirokids cereals and cereal bars. I...
  13. My husband sometimes struggles in the "understanding department" too. He wants the best for me but this whole gluten thing is hard to get even for me who suffers the reactions so I can only imagine how hard it is for him. I think my husband most struggles with the thought that our daughter and I will never really be "all better." Just tell him what...
  14. All of you are very inspirational! I don't usually do resolutions but I think I can use some this year! -find time to exercise -start going to church again -learn to bake gluten-free stuff from scratch
  15. I don't know how to tell the difference until the gluten is under control. My daughter had absolute break downs. They've completely gone away.
  16. I buy my songs from I tunes.
  17. I was undiagnosed through 3 pregnancies and I now have 3 healthy children. I think you're going to be just fine. Make sure you are staying hydrated though! Sometimes a little watered down gatorade or even some pedialyte is a good idea if you think you're getting dehydrated during pregnancy.
  18. My parents are in that area. They have good luck finding gluten-free foods at Meijer (lots of the Glutino things). Better Health is in Frandor Plaza in Lansing (they carry Kinnikinnick and other good things).
  19. Happy Birthday! I love the Pamela's mix. It is so rich you don't need much for frosting. I've dusted the cake with powdered sugar and that's been enough! Is Cool Whip okay? That would be good. If that's not okay, I know I've seen soy based Cool Whip but I can't remember the name of it!
  20. I'm not sure what your sister's reasons were but I can tell you why I would bring my own food: 1. gluten-free food can get pricey; I feel better saving my hosts that expense 2. cross contamination can happen so easily (wooden spoons, colanders, teeny-tiny crumbs) 3. gluten-free cooking takes a lot of research and I honestly wouldn't want my hosts to go...
  21. Our pets are all gluten-free (we feed California Natural). The food is pricier but since you feed less of it (because there are less fillers) our pet food budget hasn't gone up (we used to feed Iams, a much poorer quality food). And as previously mentioned, the cats' boxes are so much less stinky. Plus, they're healthier, have less hair ball issues, and...
  22. I'm so sorry to hear that! My daughter (who was diagnosed at the same time and age as your little one) seems to feel better with pedialyte to sip on. She dehydrates quickly so the pedialyte helps with that plus it is a little sweet and is gentle on the tummy.
  23. Continue breastfeeding! There's enough info out there that shows that breastfeeding is beneficial for kids who have Celiac or who are at risk for it. If your son's results are positive, you will most likely stop eating gluten anyway (it is so hard to keep a child gluten-free if the household is full of gluten).
  24. DD is mildly glutened from Duncan Hines frosting. I read the label, it looked fine so I let her have some at her preschool holiday party. Now she's sick and tomorrow is her birthday. When will I stop making mistakes?!
  25. Taco Bell is pretty awful because they sneak gluten into all their spices. We mostly do Wendy's (cheese burger with no bun, orange slices, milk) or McDonalds (cheese burger no bun, fries -but check to be sure they use a dedicated frier or apple slices, and milk). Honestly though it is so hard to eat out without getting sick. I have to make a big fuss...
