  1. I have 3 (7, 4, and almost 2) and find that the best thing to do is to wear them out in the morning (park, beach, zoo, pool, mall, etc) and have quiet time in the afternoon (nap for the baby and crafts for the bigger ones). My 7 year old is learning to sew and that is keeping her very occupied and my 4 year old likes gluesticks a lot. Hope it lasts!!
  2. Try not to worry yet. I had 3 healthy babies while still undiagnosed and on a regular diet. Best wishes for a healthy and happy pregnancy!
  3. Insist the pediatrician run the celiac panel. It sounds like there's a family history (all first degree relatives should be tested anyway) and some possible symptoms (Open Original Shared Link). If your pediatrician won't, it is time to find a new one.
  4. Tofu Pups are okay but they need a lot of toppings!
  5. Coffee bothered me too until I switched to cold brew coffee (I like the "Toddy" products). It is less acidic (and in my opinion it tastes even better).
  6. That sounds very similar to my daughter's symptoms (anemia; eczema; bulky, unformed stools; and behavorial issues). Keep in mind, lactose intolerance can be a side effect of celiac disease. You'll want to keep him on gluten until after testing if you're hoping for accurate test results. But if you're content with a dietary response, it is fine to take...
  7. I've found that you have to learn to be tough and even a little assertive when it comes to our kids with this disease. People just seem to love giving kids gluten. Think of a quick simple phrase that you just have ready for situations that might make you wimp out. Something like, "Thank you but no. She gets too sick and a cookie isn't worth it." It...
  8. I'm sorry to hear he had a bad day. It is hard feeling left out sometimes. One thing that seems to help is to bring your child's favorite snack (maybe even something that will look so good to other kids that they might ask for some). Like if you bring him his own cupcake, cover it with M&Ms so it is super delicious so much so that he doesn't miss...
  9. I think anger is part of the process I went through to get to acceptance. Let yourself feel angry (maybe find a healthy way to express that anger). And it helps me to keep reminding myself that sometimes things can suck without being anyone's fault. And as hard as it is to handle, you need to forgive everyone (especially yourself!) for the 4 years...
  10. My friend's son has a peanut allergy and no one thinks it is odd that she asks people not to bring food. I don't see why anyone would be offended especially if you're offering to provide snacks.
  11. Going lactose free was really important for my daughter. If you haven't tried that, you might want to. We only had to do it for a couple of months to give her a chance to heal. Hope you find your answer!
  12. For veggies you can try providing dipping sauces (especially if you put the dip in teeny tiny bowls). My girls love veggies in hummus, ranch dressing, ketchup, or melty cheese. And ditto the bribery suggestion! We have a "no dessert until you eat your veggies rule." It works even if dessert is just fruit with a little whipped cream. We also try...
  13. My daughter with celiac disease was the most picky eater in the world. She's still very picky but much less so since going gluten-free. At first she lived off of the gluten-free chicken nuggets (there's a few out there). But now she's almost always willing to take at least one bite of anything (and I'm careful to only try stuff I think she'll probably...
  14. I just want to add to the positive stories! My husband has dealt with several years of me having mystery ailments and 2 years of our daughter being sick before we were diagnosed. Our diagnosis was a relief to him and he's thrown himself into finding good restaurants, new recipes, and keeping us healthy. The person meant for you is out there and celiac...

    ARCHIVED Mad Mother?

Sounds like you need a new doctor to me. It is my understanding that all first degree relatives of a person with celiac disease need to be tested. It is also not acceptable to speak to a patient or an underaged patient's mother like that, in my opinion.
  17. I do a quick wipe down before DD sits down and we do a lot of handwashing. You're probably already doing something similar to this but thought I'd mention it because it has really helped my DD: we came up with a quick phrase to let her know that I'm worried about gluten exposure, we call it "gluten-hands" and that tells her that she shouldn't eat or put...
  18. My daughter couldn't potty train until she was gluten-free. We tried everything. When she was diagnosed, we planned on putting potty training on the back burner but she completely trained herself within a couple of weeks of the diet. She was younger than your grandson but when she is accidentally glutened, she has accidents even now.
  19. I'm not sure how I'd handle it in your situation. My daughter was pretty sick when she got her diagnosis and when she's accidentally gotten gluten she has a strong reaction so the endoscopy wasn't necessary to keep her honest or to convince us that the bloodwork and dietary response were positive.
  20. I haven't heard of that. Check out kellymom.com for good breastfeeding advice. When I had clogged ducts it was usually because I wasn't nursing enough or drinking enough water. Good luck with the breastfeeding! My (3rd and last) baby is almost weaned and I have to say I'm actually going to miss nursing!
  21. Rice Chex with a little cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on the top is my favorite.
  22. I didn't read all the replies so maybe someone already posted this, if so sorry! It helped me find veggie burgers I like: Open Original Shared Link
  23. My daughter dehydrates fast so watch for that (leg tenderness is her first sign of dehydration). We give her pedialyte and it helps quickly. We do peppermint tea but I bet chamomile is just as good! Don't beat yourself up about it. Everyone makes mistakes. I put a new sunblock on my daughter the other day without checking it. She turned bright...
  24. It all depends: -When eating out in a fast food place I say she has a severe allergy to wheat and bread (in case they don't get that bread is made of wheat). -When eating out in a restaurant that has a gluten-free menu (like PF Changs and Outback) I explain that she has celiac disease and is very sensitive to gluten -When we're dealing with friends...
  25. We try to avoid eating out as much as possible because my daughter is so sensitive. We've had pretty good experiences with Wendy's though. I get her the kids' meal with a cheese burger-no bun, milk, and orange slices. When I order I stress that she's very very allergic to wheat and bread and ask them to please be very careful and please change their gloves...
