  1. Before going gluten-free I was a snack cake addict! It is almost my birthday and I'm hoping to make a Hostess Cupcake knockoff. What do you think, is this doable? Suggestions?
  2. I'm sorry that this has happened. I wish I had some kind of advice for you. Right now, I'm not ready to trust other people to prepare my daughter's food so we've just been sending in really great treats on the days that she is getting left out of a treat at school but I'm sure that that won't seem so great as she gets a little older. I hate that our...
  3. Here's a list that might be helpful! Open Original Shared Link
  4. Our little girl was pretty sick. She'd been worrying us for a while but the pediatrician kept dismissing everything "some kids are just anemic, some kids just get rashes, some kids just get sick a lot..." Finally, I requested an appointment to sit down and go over all of my concerns and demand some testing. They tested her for just about everything out...
  5. My daughter that has celiac disease was also an extremely picky eater. She's my only picky eater. She is getting a lot better since we started eating gluten-free. I imagine that picky eating was one of her defense mechanisms. She dismissed foods based on looks and texture mostly. Even now, she closes her eyes when she takes her first bite of a...
  6. I keep Envirokids cereal bars in my car at all times! My daughters like the Koala ones, they're kinda like chocolatey rice krispie treats. We also have good luck with the Lays Stax potato chips.
  7. My daughter got all excited because a character mentioned gluten-free marshmallows on Hannah Montana today. The show was a little negative about it but my little girls thought it was so cool. Anyone know any other mentions of gluten-free diets in kids' shows?
  8. Maybe she's in a growth spurt or maybe breakfast is her big meal of the day. My 17 month old will eat the world's biggest breakfast (today it was a banana, two eggs, milk, and a piece of toast) but eats tiny lunches and dinners.
  9. -My daughter had almost instant improvement. She was feeling better within days. But, we're still seeing signs of improvement 6 months down the road! -She is not hungrier but will eat more of a variety of food than ever before (this has been a gradual change). She is gaining weight (was a size 2T and is now almost grown out of 4s!) because she is now...
  10. I would be strongly tempted (for me, not for my daughter)!
  11. We do but only very rarely. We've had good luck at Wendy's so far. When I order I really stress that she has serious food allergies (yes, I know it isn't an allergy but it seems to get a good response from the staff!) and that they need to change gloves before touching her food and that her food can't touch anything with wheat in it. We get her a bun-less...
  12. Ice cream it is! Thanks everyone!
  13. Maybe the ice cream? Milk shake? Anything?!
  14. What a disappointment! My fingers are crossed that bag lunches will be the "in thing" when my daughter is in full time school!
  15. If it is a close friend or family member, I just say that "I'm sorry we can't have it in the house but thank you so much for the lovely thought." With other people, we've just been sending it to my husband's office. Another poster suggested a nice reply if someone asks if you enjoyed the gift; we just say, "We couldn't eat it because we don't eat gluten...
  16. Gluten-free can be a hard adjustment at first. I recommend buying some good gluten-free mixes, recipes or even cookbooks, and ingredients for meals and inviting your wife to learn to cook gluten-free with you (maybe even get a sitter for the kids and get some flowers and wine to make it almost like a date). I'm sure a lot of people on this board can help...
  17. Lethargic, weepy, territorial ("MINE!"), prone to absolute meltdowns, and a little OCD. She gets these symptoms right before the vomiting and diarrhea. It is so hard to see her this way because otherwise she is very generous, easy going, and is just a riot (she keeps everyone laughing!).
  18. What about one of those egg crate mattress toppers? I used one in college and it made even the dorm beds comfy.
  19. Kids heal fast. So if you go gluten-free before the biopsy, her intestines won't show damage. If you want to have the biopsy, you need to keep her on gluten until she has it. That is one of the reasons we opted not to do the biopsy.
  20. I would definitely tell your pediatrician. You're raising awareness by telling him and maybe his next patient won't have to suffer any longer than necessary.
  21. I'm not exactly sure what a doctor would take seriously. My GI recommended this site. But, my only doctor friend scoffs at most websites that have "medical" information on them. I wonder if it would be best to take the father to a consultation with your son's doctor?
  22. That had me giggling away! Thanks for reposting it!
  23. I know how overwhelming all this is! Here's some books that really helped me: -Kids with Celiac Disease : A Family Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy, Gluten-Free Children by Danna Korn -Living Gluten-free for Dummies by Danna Korn -Eating Gluten-Free With Emily: A Story For Children With Celiac Disease by Bonnie J. Kruszka and Richard S. Cihlar I...
  24. I don't think that is too paranoid because I feel the same way! Whenever we have gluten in the house or are at an event with gluten, my husband and I wash our hands so often they get all dry and cracked. We've even rearranged our table settings so that the gluten eaters are on the other side from the non gluten eaters even though we rarely have gluten...
