  1. A Chick FilA just opened nearby. What do they have that is gluten-free? Is it pretty safe? I rely on El Pollo Loco and In and Out for my fast food fix.
  2. It can be used for eczema as well. It's a topical steroid.
  3. It is a steroid cream or ointment I believe. My Doctor prescribes me steroid creams to calm a flare up because he doesn't want me on Dapsone. It is not a cure, only a gluten free diet is. Even staying gluten free it is possible to have flare ups every now and then. Different doctors presribe different creams and ointments to relieve the inflammation...
  4. I have DH diagnosed by skin biopsies. It is terribly itchy and pops up on me immediately after I accidentally eat some crumb of gluten. Although it is not actually an allergy, but an intolerance to gluten, I tell everyone I am Allergic to wheat because it is just easier for people to understand. I also get allergic skin reactions to random things such...
  5. Cajun Chicken Littles from the Cheesecake Factory, with Oreo Cheesecake for desert.
  6. I was given that in ointment form for my DH before my biopsies. It calmed down the rash, but wasn't a cure.
  7. I was diagnosed almost two years ago, but never went on dapsone. I am on a strict gluten free diet, but I still get rashes sometimes. My dermatologist says it is something other than DH. Like you, I get welts, especially around my waist. I use free and clear detergents for my clothes, mild cleansers for my skin and topical steroid creams when I have these...
  8. I also get the bumps (like little blisters for me) when I'm glutened. I have definitely been diagnosed with DH so I always just assume that's what it is. I have been gluten-free for nearly two years and it always seems to be a restaurant that messes me up. I have also had the red ear thing, but I never associated it with gluten! Hmmm.
  9. I have been DX'd with DH by biopsy. My scalp problems were very similar to those described until I went on a strict gluten-free diet. I think it took a couple of months for my head to completely heal, but I rarely have a flare-up now unless I get glutened. I do have flare ups when I take anti-inflamatory drugs such as Aleve and Motrin even though they...
  10. I would never had believed I had celiac disease if I hadn't had a skin biopsy which was positive (for DH whcih means I have celiac disease.) I had eaten gluten all my life and NEVER DREAMED I had a sensitivity to wheat, etc. In fact, if I had stomach problems I always ate BREAD to make me feel better (oops!) ! So yes, your symptoms could easily be celiac...
  11. Oh great! I'm going to Laguna in a couple of days! I'll avoid sushi places. Mom's bf reminds me of an in-law I have who was actually diagnosed with celiac disease! He told me, "Yeah, the dr says I've got that same 'wheat thing' you have. " So of course I had to say, "So why are you drinking a beer and eating a sandwich?" His reply? "That doctor's crazy...
  12. I praise of supportive spouses: My husband is a wonderful cook. He has been great about converting our favorite recipes just for me. I am the only one with celiac disease at my house, but our main dishes at dinner are always gluten-free. I stopped making two batches of pasta about a year ago. Sometimes the others have bread that I can't have, but I can...
  13. I originally sought treatment for skin problems and was diagnosed with dh and, thus, celiac disease by my dermatologist. Looking back, I realize that I have had GI problems here and there, but nothing that made me see a specialist or allergist or anything. Your daughters skin sounds just like my daughter's was at her age. She had terrible excema, just...
  14. I think all Whole Foods have some Kinnickinnick products. They are in a frozen food section. You can also order from Kinnickinnick.com, but shipping is $10 so I order lots at one time. There are many WHole Foods stores in California, but we don't have the fresh bakery stuff that they have on the East Coast, yet.
  15. Last Thanksgiving I made gluten-free creamed corn to take to my in-laws house. A well-meaning but careless relative pulled a serving spoon out of the canister of flour (they had just thickened the gravy) and stuck the spoon right in my casserole, sprinkling flour all over the peas and sweet potatoes on the way!
  16. I can relate to this thread so well. I'm at least 30 pounds overweight. People keep commenting that I must be losing weight since I can't eat bread, etc.,, but I'm actually slowly gaining! I also have the thyroid issues and celiac disease. I'm interested in the SC diet and will look into it today.
  17. My Raynauds has also gotten bettter since I went gluten-free. I never really thought of the connection before. Hmmmmmm!
  18. I have Raynauds. I have had it about twenty years. I have no idea if it is at all related to celiac disease. When I am cold (or very stressed out- which isn't that often) I lose the color in my fingers (and toes sometimes) My fingers look dead and bloodless. It doesn't hurt; it just tingles until the blood starts to come back into my fingers. Then it...
  19. Continuing with the Kinnickinnick thought.... Their chocolate and maple-covered donuts are wonderful, as are the carrot raisin muffins. I take them with me to Starbucks and feel like I'm cheating. Bad foods? 1. most breads, 2. Amy's frozen pizza (But who ever heard of a good frozen pizza?), and 3. white rice pastas (they clump together into one giant mass...
  20. Be sure you check to see if a fryer is used to fry anything other than fries. Most places stick chicken strips (breaded) or onion rings (breaded) into the same fryers as the fries. As for a remedy, try immodium, or Tums, or Pepto B. Read the ingredients on Tums, though. I think some flavors have starch. How about good old 7up? Or peppermint tea (Celestial...
  21. When I was first diagnosed I started with plain rice and hard-boiled eggs. I am SO over that. I eat lots of grilled meats and vegetables. I go out to eat several times a week. I am a cereal eater, so I eat Cocoa Pebbles or gluten-free cereals from Trader Joes or Whole Foods. I eat protein burgers at In and Out and the fries, too. When I crave cookies...
  22. I went to NYC last week. Besides the places on the list, I tried Sardi's and Tavern on the Green. They don't have gluten-free menus or anything, but both places were very accomodating. The chef was able to convey which sauces, etc. I should avoid. Definitely go to Risoterria while you are there. It's the best.
  23. The ingredient to watch out for in generic ibuprofen is "stodium Starch glycolate" which is in some brands (Savon for one)
  24. My understanding is that 1 in 133 have Celiac (whether it has been diagnosed or not). I understand your frustration. It does seem like an impossible diet at first. You are actually lucky to live in Europe. Restaurants seem to be more accomodating than in the U.S. As for bread products, I order from www.kinnikinnick.com. I really love their muffins and...

    ARCHIVED I Had To Laugh...

We have to laugh when my family goes to a restaurant together. I, too, just say I'm allergic to bread or to flour so the waiters understand. But daughter #1 is allergic to cashews and pistachios and avoids cheese and creamy sauces. Daughter #2 has the peanut allergy. My husband eats everything so he tells the waiter to bring him MY BREAD, and everyone...
