ARCHIVED Bacterial Overgrowth
burdee replied to celiac3270's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's an interesting article and possible explanation for those who are still suffering symptoms despite scrupulously avoiding gluten. Fortunately my Enterolab test results told me I had autoimmune reactions/antibodies to casein AND gluten. So after avoiding gluten and just using lactaid for over 2 months I started eliminating all dairy as well as gluten... -
ARCHIVED How Long Before Symptoms Went Away?
burdee replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My experience was: when I first went gluten-free, I felt immediately better and had several pain free hours. Then with even the tiniest slip, I felt even worse than before. As I scrupulously gluten 'sleuthed' to eliminate all sources, I STILL had regular symptoms. Since I had done tests with Enterolab (which included a milk sensitivity test--although I... -
Hi Daina: I had celiac symptoms for years before I realized I had celiac disease, went on the gluten-free diet and then was diagnosed. My primary symptoms were constipation, abdominal pain, bloating and gas. Longterm constipation (esp. straining to 'go') gave me hemorrhoids which are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area (either internal or external...

I'm sorry to hear you also were put off with the IBS 'copout'. I was given that MISdiagnosis 10 years ago and finally diagnosed myself and went gluten-free 3 months ago. My husband says that should be 'IDK' or "I Don't Know", because that's really what doctors mean when they use that IBS label. However, I rather like 'IBS' because it stands for what...

ARCHIVED How Long Before Symptoms Went Away?
burdee replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Catfish AND celiac3270: I wasn't going to respond to this one because I am STILL not symptom free all the time, which is my idea of normal. Since I realize I've had various celiac symptoms all my life, but only started the gluten-free approach 3 months ago, I'm focussing on the most obvious symptoms that led me to suspect celiac disease and seek a diagnosis... -
Hi celiac3270: Long before my undiagnosed celiac symptoms became painful enough to suspect celiac disease, I reacted painfully to dairy. So my doctor suggested 'lactaid' supplements (chewable tablets) and lactose-free milk. That DID help for a while, so I didn't have cramping pains after I consumed dairy. HOWEVER, eventually recurrent pain led me to suspect...

ARCHIVED Am I Doing Anything Wrong?
burdee replied to Alexolua's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Alexolua: I don't think Rice Dream's drink is gluten-free. That's why I tried soy milks and then bought some almond milk. Maybe someone else can verify this, but I vaguely recall they used barley in processing that beverage. BURDEE -
ARCHIVED Am I Doing Anything Wrong?
burdee replied to Alexolua's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Alexolua: I've been gluten free (with lotsa slips at first) for 12 weeks and casein free (with one bad slip) for almost 2 weeks. I went casein free after I did a milk free 36 hour test (in anticipation of my Enterolab results). My dramatic reaction to a 1/4 c. 'lactose free' milk convinced me I needed to avoid all dairy even before my E-lab results said... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Of Autism
burdee replied to Lorrie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Lorrie: There's a great website about dietary intervention for autistic spectrum disorders which is located at Open Original Shared Link This website providies information about autistic behaviors and dietarty intervention for parents and relatives of children with various autistic syndromes. Basically their dietary approach is to restrict all sources... -
ARCHIVED Bette Hagaman Had A Stroke:(
burdee replied to angel-jd1's topic in Publications & Publicity
OK, I just spoke to the Seattle GIG office about Bette Hagman. I'm not sure exactly when she had her stroke, but I guess it was around late March or early April. She has been alert and speaking even right after her stroke, but she's still recovering physically. She does read encouragement cards and notes, so she would appreciate those. I don't know... -
ARCHIVED I Am Beginning To See The Light
burdee replied to j9n's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey Janine: Thanks for the positive post. I get so discouraged by even occasional small twinges of cramping pain now that I forget how bloating and excruciating cramping pain ruled my life 3 months ago. 12 weeks today GLUTEN FREE ... YAY!! I experienced slow but steady healing (less pain and bloating) each day until about 2 weeks ago when I also cut... -
ARCHIVED Going Off Of Gluten Free Diet
burdee replied to Susan123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Susan: Thanks for explaining your situation. Perhaps you should ask your doctor your original question "Is there anything I should be aware about going off a gluten free diet. Besides obvious symptoms." Most of us here have had such horrible experiences with ingesting gluten (pain, intestinal damage, debilitating symptoms, other autoimmune diseases... -
OK, Tiffany. Here's a list of Seattle restaurants which feature gluten free entrees. Since I'm not sure how familiar you are with the Seattle area, I just listed the names, phone numbers and general location. If I didn't recognize the exact location, I just indicated 'Seattle'. Call individual restaurants for directions. Bonefish Grill Downtown...

Hi JUDI42MIL: WOW! I could relate to so much of your experience. I also received my 'official' (Enterolab) diagnosis recently (gluten/casein antibodies/autoimmune response plus celiac gene), but I've been gluten free for over 11 weeks and dairy free for over a week. Previously I had used starving, bingeing and purging (all considered anorexic/bulimic habits...

ARCHIVED Rash Testing
burdee replied to aswolf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 'stomach problems' were also diagnosed as 'lactose intolerance' and 'IBS' but following the IBS diet just exacerbated my pains and using 'lactaid supplements' didn't resolve all my symptoms (even after I finally tried a gluten free diet when I suspected celiac). If you suspect you are celiac, don't settle for anything less that blood tests and/or biopsies... -
ARCHIVED Going Off Of Gluten Free Diet
burdee replied to Susan123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Susan123: Just curious, but how did you discover you were gluten 'sensitive' in the first place? Why would your doctor test you for celiac, if you didn't complain of 'symptoms'? Were you being tested for allergies to other foods? Did you suspect celiac, but tests came back negative? You said you have a 'wheat allergy and gluten sensitivity' but can ... -
My GERD/reflux experience was similar to Richard's with a few exceptions. I was diagnosed with 'gastrititis' with acid reflux (before they started calling it GERD) almost 20 years ago. I went through many prescriptions for Zantac (wouldn't take Tagamet because of known side effects) and LIVED on Mylanta or Maalox tablets. Then I found a nondiet approach...

Hi Janine: In response to your question "Is all dairy bad?" ... That depends on whether you don't tolerate lactose (milk sugar) or casein (milk protein) or both. With merely lactose problems you can use lactaid milk and lactaid chewable tablets to digest dairy. With casein problems you need to avoid ALL dairy. However, I would suggest you completely eliminate...

Hey Karen: When I said I'd been gluten-free for 11 weeks I should have written ATTEMPTING to be gluten-free. Every week persistent symptoms motivated me to do even more intensive gluten sleuthing which revealed: my deli turkey contained broth, cross contamination ran rampant through my own kitchen with shared condiments, cannisters which formerly contained...

ARCHIVED How Long Were You On Gluten B4 You Got The Test?
burdee replied to lyndszai's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hey Lyndszai: I couldn't vote because you didn't include a category for those of us who went gluten-free as soon as we suspected we had gluten intolerance/celiac and then tested later with Enterolab (while still gluten-free). Maybe that's info for another poll and I just have to skip this one. I went to a naturopath 5 days after I started avoiding gluten... -
ARCHIVED Bette Hagaman Had A Stroke:(
burdee replied to angel-jd1's topic in Publications & Publicity
I heard about Bette's stroke 3 months ago, since I live in Seattle. She used to attend one of our local support groups. So the 'stroke' news is 3 months old--unless she had another stroke since then. However, I have not heard anything from any of our local celiac support group members about how she's doing. I'll call the Seattle GIG Office on Monday... -
I'm heading to San Diego in October, so I'd also appreciate info on celiac friendly restaurants. I located a gluten-free retailer near the airport (Gluten Solutions), but need some restaurants whose waiters/chefs speak 'celiac' or might be able to grasp the concept of gluten free/dairy free. I live in Seattle, WA, so if 'pegom1' would be visiting...

ARCHIVED Lists Of Gf/cf Foods
burdee replied to burdee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, Mariann. I was looking for a free list I could print out, but I could certainly afford the GFCGDIET Shopping Guide. Another question, though. I noticed your signature included 'soy limited'. What does your 'soy limited' signature indicate? Did you react to soy with similar symptoms as you reacted to gluten? How would I know if I 'react... -
Hardnut: Just curious, but how did you come up with a topic about how people deal with celiac and what products (I assume you mean gluten free) are on the market? Do you or anyone in your family have celiac disease? As suggested, just reading our posts esp. under the 'coping' topic should give you a pretty good idea about how we cope (or don't cope sometimes...

Hi Doglover: WELCOME to this board. I agree that feeling better is sooo worth the limitations of following the Gluten Free approach. Notice I didn't say 'diet' because that sounds like restrictions. I prefer to think SUBSTITUTION, since there's so many great gluten-free substitutes for just about anything I used to eat. I'm having more of a challenge...
