  1. Tropical Source makes great gluten/dairy free chocolate bars (delicious DARK chocolate) in dark expresso roast, hazelnut, raspberry, almond and rice varieties. UNFORTUNATELY those contain SOY which may cause problems for others (like me). Has anyone found any gluten/dairy/soy free chocolate? I know Ener-G Foods makes gluten-free/df/sf chocolate chips...
  2. Ruth: Beano is gluten-free/CF and really does work. I can enjoy all the gassy vegies and beans when I use those tablets. I really prefer low glycemic bean carbs to the gluten-free pasta, grains and pasta carbs, even though I've controlled my weight enough to not worry about carbs per se. Without beano I'd miss all those healthy vegies and bean carbs. ...
  3. Alex: I wanted to share more of my 'soy' experience and how that convinced me I have soy problems. OK, I already said I substituted a LOT of different soy products when I learned I couldn't have dairy. Even without dairy or gluten I had symptoms which strongly resembled my dairy symptoms. So I went off soy for a week or so. However, I really thought I...
  4. Daina: There is a simple stool test for celiac disease available. Check out www.Enterolab.com. I did my tests for gluten and milk intolerance and the celiac gene through that lab. It was simple, noninvasive, expensive, but well worth it. However, most doctors will test for gluten antibodies in the blood or an intestinal biopsy to show damaged villi from...
  5. Ruth: If you used the oatmeal to increase soluble fiber in your diet to help with cholesterol readings, consider trying a rice bran cereal instead. Ener-G Foods makes a GREAT rice bran cereal which is VERY high in fiber. I used to cook that with quinoa flake cereal to make a hot cereal which was very similar to oatmeal. Quinoa doesn't have as much fiber...
  6. Pacific makes gluten-free/DF rice milk and almond milk. There are several other gluten-free/DF rice milk brands. Sorry I've forgotten the brands, but read the ingredient labels. Also Almond Breeze makes a safe almond milk. BURDEE

  9. Sorry, I don't have any experience with Zelnorm. I have not subjected my body to any drugs to cope with celiac disease symptoms. However, I found your post very interesting. I thought Zelnorm was supposed to RESOLVE symptoms of constipation, bloating, pain and gas. Your experience that Zelnorm exacerbated the very symptoms it's supposed to treat just...
  10. Thanks, Kate, for the reassurance. No, really, you reassured me by telling me you had SYMPTOMS after introducing each of those foods. I also had SYMPTOMS when I introduced soy products to substitute for dairy products. However, I have NEVER had symptoms after eating peanut butter or corn products. Before my gluten/casein intolerance test results, corn...
  11. I wasn't trying to suggest all anorexic or bulimic behaviors are 'caused' by undiagnosed celiac symptoms. I moderate a website for people with 'disordered eating' behaviors which include bingeing, purging, starving, compulsive overeating and chronic yoyo dieting cycles. Only a few of over 40 members have described symptoms which could be celiac related...
  12. Kate: HOW did you discover those other 'intolerances'? After relying on just fruit, vegies and meat for a while, did you add back each of those ingredients (peanuts, corn and soy) in an 'elimination' diet manner? I already have been diagnosed (Enterolab tests) with gluten and casein intolerances and reacted badly to soy. So as I ate my breakfast of PEANUT...
  13. Sorbitol is an artificial sweetener used in many sugar free foods and other products. As such, it's indigestible (hence calorie free), but also causes 'IBS' symptoms (gas, pain, bloating and diarrhea) for many people who consume products containing sorbitol. I first discovered sorbitol problems (cramping pain, bloating and diarrhea) many years ago when...
  14. OOOOPPPPSSS!! Sorry I missed your 'drift' there. Similar doubts (about dairy as well as gluten) led me to also do an elimination test and later Enterolab tests. However, my symptoms (excruciating cramping pain plus the bloating and gas) are pretty obvious. But even after eliminating gluten/casein/soy, I still seem 'sensitive' to acidic foods, overly...
  15. Tiffany: It's very likely you are intolerant to gluten AND dairy AND any other major allergens. Try eliminating gluten AND dairy for a while to see how you feel. I wouldn't advise substituting soy for dairy products unless you are sure soy doesn't bother you. Also ignore comments from doubting MILs who aren't concerned with how food affects THEIR bodies...
  16. Peppermint tea helps relieve the cramping pains from celiac disease reactions. For gas and bloating I do pilates or yoga exercises that put my knees to my stomach or over my head. That works EVERY time to push gas through. Also a hot shower with water spray concentrated on the painful area helps me. I won't take any drugs to treat celiac disease symptoms...
  17. Now I remember why I didn't consider Colgate or Crest, even though both are gluten-free/cf. Both contain sorbitol in their ingredients. For me (and many others) sorbitol causes cramping, bloating, gas and diarrhea, similar to celiac disease symptoms. Tom's of Maine toothpaste did not contain sorbitol. BURDEE
  18. Actually I would say it's the other way around ... undiagnosed celiac disease symptoms often lead to 'disordered eating' behaviors. I've heard from many celiacs who avoid eating for long periods to avoid the inevitable uncomfortable (and even painful) symptoms. That could be considered 'anorexic' starving by people who don't understand celiac disease. ...
  19. I just thought of another source of gas and bloating which I now avoid. When I was looking at ingredients for gluten free/casein free toothpastes, I noticed most include sorbitol which can cause gas and bloating for many people. The only gluten-free/cf toothpaste I found WITHOUT sorbitol is Tom's of Maine. Also many sugar free candies and gums include...
  20. With all this confusion about celiac disease vs. gluten intolerant, I am soooo glad I did tests through Enterolab which tests for autoimmune reaction to tissue transglutaminase, gluten sensitivity (antibodies), casein sensitivity (antibodies) and small intestinal malabsorption (fecal fat) AS WELL AS the gene test for gluten sensitivity. Even though I had...
  21. Even after I eliminated gluten/dairy sources, I also still had symptoms of bloating, gas and cramping pain. When I tried to substitute soy for dairy, I had the same symptoms. So I also abstained from soy Avoiding those 3 things gave me some 'good' days of no pain, no bloating, very little gas. But whenever I had any accidental ingestion of any of those...
  22. Alexolua: My gastrointestinal 'soy' symptoms are just like my dairy symptoms, except less severe and shorter in duration. Also I don't get the sinus and regularity symptoms with soy like I do with dairy. My gluten reaction symptoms are definitely different from dairy in duration, intensity and type of gastrointestinal pain. So I agree with all the previous...
  23. 'Sorry that I don't have any experience with those supplements, but I wanted to ask: Does your doctor know you are celiac and can't tolerate any gluten? I've seen 'free of wheat gluten' labels on products that contained barley, rye or oats ingredients, so I would check the ingredients on that supplement. I would NOT take those supplements until you know...

Jill: Check out all the books from the 'Bookstore' on this site. "Dangerous Grains" by Ron Hoggan is the best physiological explanation of celiac disease. Several other books included in that 'bookstore' discuss how to cope with symptoms and stay gluten free. Good luck! BURDEE
  25. Tiffany: I had given up on tuna, since most 'water-pack' actually includes soybean oil and I can't tolerate soy. What brand is that truly water-packed tuna? Is it the Whole Foods brand or another? BURDEE
