  1. Try the Nit-Free lice comb from Natural Ginesis. We had a HORRIBLE infestation and that cleared it up completely -- the comb has microscopic razors on the teeth, and it destroys the nits that remain in the hair. We tried one of the medicinal remedies (can't remember which one) twice, and it didn't get rid of the problem. This comb did. But you have to...
  2. I'm trying to track down the culprit in the most severe glutening I've had in months. The only things I had to eat the night before symptoms started were: Back to Nature rice crackers (Kraft product and claim gluten-free on their website), and Cedar's red pepper hummus (also claims gluten-free, right on the package). I also had a small, CC-type reaction...
  3. I would love to know the average and the low antibody levels of those who test negative. For example, does anyone ever have *zero* antibodies to gluten? And what ever happened to the rectal challenge test for diagnosing celiac? I read somewhere that they had discontinued using it because it was diagnosing too many people, and of course *all* those people...
  4. Rachel, thanks for the good information on enzymes! I'm hoping you can help with this question. My DD and I are going on a cruise in a couple of weeks. It's a Disney cruise, so we know they're extremely good about food issues and CC. But I believe it's inevitable that we'll be CC'd at least once on our 10-day trip -- and I just don't want to be sick at...
  5. I'm in!! Seriously -- I think this problem only will get bigger as "they" (big business/green business/etc.) try to come up with products using "waste" from other products. I saw a show on TV a while ago that featured a "green" house -- the new homeowner was proudly showing off her kitchen cabinets, made not from wood of some sort, but from ... "wheat...
  6. You bet. I don't drink their coffees, but for awhile I liked their little dried fruit-and-nut packages -- the ingredients seemed perfectly safe, and I never reacted. The last time I was in Florida, I picked up two for the drive home to Virginia. When I ate the first one in the car, I noticed the dried cranberries in it seemed sweeter, somehow. The heartburn...
  7. Well, maybe it wasn't the gloves then (although the powder inside did seem sticky, and my hand wasn't sweating much). But if it wasn't the glove, that bothers me even more -- I've carefully created an entire gluten-free bubble around myself, and I *still* get sick! Maybe I should found the first gluten-free island-based republic ...
  8. I know -- I thought of all that (including the rubber glove stuck forever on my hand by the glue in gluten !). But I don't react to latex (and I don't think this glove was latex anyway, just some kind of nylon), and while I do react to corn, it's a different reaction. And this is *definitely* a gluten reaction. I generally can figure out when my exposure...
  9. Talk about gluten being EVERYWHERE -- I was working in my storage shed yesterday and put on a pair of disposable gloves (as I often do to protect my hands when working with rough materials). One of the gloves came from a pair I'd had around awhile, though -- not the non-powdered type I normally buy. And when I took that glove off, I noticed white powder on...
  10. I heartily second CMCM's recommendation of Gary Taubes' book "Good Calories, Bad Calories" -- it's an excellent (albeit dense) survey of what we know vs. what we think we know but really don't about optimal nutrition and chronic disease.
  11. "With all this in mind, does anyone know of a healthy, non-celiac person who has tried going gluten-free and seen actual, tangible benefits? And if so, what where their reactions to gluten when it was re-introduced?" Yes -- me! I was what I considered to be "symptom-free" when I went gluten-free because I was nursing my daughter, who needed to be gluten...
  12. Thanks for all your replies and concern! It hasn't been severe enough to prod me into seeing an MD or going to the ER. It's just ... there, in a constant, annoying kind of way. It improved enough yesterday that I was able to ignore it (mostly), and it's *almost* gone today. But for future reference, I would dearly love to know how to knock it out before...
  13. I glutened myself accidentally (well, sort of) on New Year's Eve. A friend put a *huge* amount of time and effort into producing what she said was a "gluten-free" meal in her gluten-filled kitchen, even after I asked her not to do so and told her I would bring food for me and for my DD. I knew the huge chance I was taking by eating any of it (and did...
  14. This is where I started -- I had told my mother that DD and I would cook the entire meal and had planned to make it entirely gluten-free. But my mother decided it wouldn't be "fair" to deprive the rest of the family of their gluten-y favorites. My father (*certainly* undiagnosed Celiac, and also the least supportive of my immediate family when DD and I first...
  15. I, too, got migraines for the first time after I tried to reintroduce gluten (long story -- was doing the diet for my DD and didn't realize *I* had a problem, too!). Those horrible headaches went away for me quickly (within a week) after I went gluten-free again, so hopefully they will for you, too! In the meantime, caffeine (Red Bull or otherwise) and sublingual...
  16. I'd host if I could and make the meal entirely gluten-free, but my parents don't travel anymore and they live 1,000 miles away -- if I want to be with them (and I do), then it's at their house. I did manage to keep my DD and me safe (well, mostly -- there was the "natural flavorings" ham incident) while we were there. But I stressed about it the *entire...
  17. I had a very strong reaction to this, as it sounds (at least on the surface) so very similar to what happened to me. Nearly four years ago, when my DD and I first went gluten-free, my then-husband got onboard -- but only incredibly begrudgingly. He, too, never cleaned up after himself, and would let my then-three-year-old child play on the counter amongst...
  18. Hi Ken, Your changing reactions are interesting -- I can't wait to hear what other folks have to say on this topic! I'm sorry to hear your brain fog and fatigue are back -- that's what's been happening to me (I've been assuming because of CC, since I do eat out a lot, albeit carefully). That's why I'm going to spend January eating at home and being...
  19. Hi folks, Over the holidays I had ample opportunity to test my reactions to alcohol (hee hee!), and found that they have changed considerably since I became strictly gluten-free (about four months ago). One glass of wine used to make me tipsy and two glasses was my absolute limit -- beyond that and I'd get sick and/or have a raging hangover the next day...
  20. Once her behavior settles down (give it a couple of months), you'll be able to tell easily whether she's in that "out of control" gluten-induced place or whether she could get ahold of herself if she tried. I know it seems overwhelming now, but it will be obvious to you soon. In fact, I've seen similar behaviors in friends' children, and even persuaded one...
  21. Hi Kate, If you can afford it (and none of this is cheap!), I'd definitely get the Enterolab gene test as well as the other testing. It might turn out that you've got DQ7 or DQ9 along with your DQ1. Your doc didn't screen for those because they're not recognized as Celiac genes in the U.S., just in other (more enlightened) countries. Good luck! Jane
  22. ... and my mother just glutened the leftover turkey by sticking a stuffing-contaminated fork in it <sigh>.
  23. Thanks so, so much to all of you for your hugs and kind thoughts! Things are a bit better here, although it turns out I definitely *was* glutened the night we arrived (I suspect the ham -- when, oh, when will I learn not to risk "natural flavoring"?). It took my almost-seven-year-old daughter to point it out to me -- "Mommy, you're acting awfully cranky...
  24. I've spent the last three days at my parents' house guarding (mostly successfully) against the ever-pervasive crumbs. It's working so far (I'm sure I've been CC'd, but at least I'm not really sick, and DD Danielle seems okay). But it's driving me insane and practically ruining my holiday (not to mention I have a cold, which I hate)! So we were *supposed...
  25. Hi Sharon, Blood tests and biopsies are *extremely* unreliable in young children and will be even more unreliable in your daughter since she's been off gluten for a few weeks already. IMHO, there's absolutely no point in torturing her for a month and then putting her through a medical procedure that's likely to yield a false negative. You got your answer...
