  1. I am a Catholic and not being able to receive the host was very traumatic for me until I was told by a priest that you could experience 'spiritual communion' without having to ingest the wafer. He also said you could do the wine only if you choose to but to be honest with you the logistics of being at the right mass (we go to the cathedral), at the right...
  2. Udi's bagel w/ gluten-free pizza sauce, pepperoni and mozarella! Mmmmmm.
  3. How big is your department? How many people? Is it possible that you could offer to cook the ham. They could pay for it, OF Course...but you come out ahead looking like a generous soul and you get to eat the ham without any of the worries listed above.

    ARCHIVED Blood Type

So far I see a number of green-eyed, reddish brown haired celiacs here, which describes me as well.
  6. I like your analogy of the wheelchair. This past week a co-worker asked if I had tried the new chocolate-covered bugles snack. Most people that I work with know that I have to eat gluten free and as she asked she remembered that I couldn't have the bugles and apologized for asking! I told her it was no big deal. She then said she was so amazed at my commitment...

    ARCHIVED Blood Type

I'm pretty sure we are related somehow...I mean, like we both have mothers, right? Just kidding, but we do share the same blood type and your heritage is almost identical to mine..except that there is some french in mine as well and the traditional 'my great, great, great grandmother was a cherokee princess' schtick! LOL
  8. Yay for you! I knew you could find yummy things to make! I love fried chicken! You can also find crushed, gluten-free cornflake crumbs for chicken and I have a really great recipe for chicken thighs stuffed with cheese and baked in crushed taco chips that I would be happy to share. I love the gluten-free corn chex. I crushed them and used them on...

A+....which explains my tendency to be an over-achiever I think we have determined that Celiac does not discriminate!

    ARCHIVED Chili's

I have really good experiences with the Chili's and Applebee's where I live. Yes, they have screwed up a couple of times and I have had to send something back to the kitchen, but by and large they are very accommodating and I have yet to be glutened by either of them. Good rule of thumb is to try and go before a rush so that they have time to pay attention...
  11. It's interesting because my tastes go in cycles too. One week I could eat tuna with celery, carrots and vinegar for breakfast lunch and dinner, and the next week it will be something totally different and I don't even want to look at the tuna. Right now, I'm just getting over a stomach bug (not gluten) and nothing sounds good. That's a problem when you...
  12. Can I get an 'Amen'? Totally agree. The darker, the better, but only occasionally and only in very small doses.
  13. My daughter came home from school the other day and said there was a girl who also has Celiac who says she takes a pill when she plans to eat gluten the prevents her from having problems afterwards. I explained to my daughter that while that sounded like a wonderful option, just because she was not having symptoms did not mean she was not still doing damage...
  14. Dandt, I don't know if they carry them in Australia but Kettle brand chips have an amazing vinegar and salt flavor, among other yummy offerings. Also, if you have Lays potato chips there, check to see if they offer Vinegar and Salt. Many of their chips are gluten-free as well. Scarlett's Mommy; I am sorry that you are not getting more support from...
  15. Do you live in a larger community? There are several pizza places in our community, which is mid-sized, that carry gluten-free pizza. Also, your larger store chains have some pre-cooked gluten-free meals in their freezer section. Amy's is a brand that comes to mind. Do you have a Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, or Costco nearby? They also have a great supply...
  16. Odd, but yes and chocolate would be one thing that really does not appeal anymore. Leaves a kind of nasty aftertaste. Is way too sweet and just doesn't do it for me anymore. Now give me a big plate of gluten-free spaghetti and meatballs and a tasty salad with some Chebe bread and I'm there!
  17. Good point! I do tolerate celery pretty well but raw veggies like carrots and broccoli kill both of us. And apples are tough too. Also, to add insult to injury, my daughter has braces so that limits a bit what she can manage. She came home from school today and said that the pain was so bad this afternoon that she had to go to the nurse for tylenol. ...
  18. One of the most accurate statements that I have ever read about Celiac Disease is that it is a socially isolating disease. It is when so many social or family functions revolve around food. Especially at this time of year. And as everyone here has said, we have all experienced what you are going through with the anger and grief so I understand that this...
  19. I have a question about this...both my daughter and I seem to be bothered by brown rice and flax. I know that we need to have fiber in our diets but we both seem to have problems digesting it. I also realize that the purpose of fiber is to help 'cleanse' out the plumbing but if we can't handle fiber is there an alternative?
  20. We got the results of our daughter's biopsies today which were negative. I expected nothing less after seeing the pictures from the scopes. What I DID expect was a more definitive plan from the GI. They had a nurse call with the results, who then said 'maybe you could remove dairy from her diet for two weeks and give us a call to let us know how that goes...
  21. All of this information is so interesting and thought provoking. One of the things that I have seen here is the if you react immediately, it's more of an indication that you have a wheat allergy. I always know within 15 minutes of ingesting gluten that I have been zapped so the statement that immediate reaction is a sign of wheat allergy would seem to...
  22. Thank you to all of you for your input and encouragement. Actually to answer one question, my daughter actually had an ovarian cyst rupture almost 2 years ago so we thought that was what she was dealing with again. Her pain took us to her GYN who did blood tests to rule out appendicitis and an ultrasound that was 'inconclusive'. She sent us for a CAT scan...
  23. Four years ago after suffering for many years with illness and stomach pain, I finally went to the doctor seeking an answer. After many tests that left me with no conclusive answers the doctor suggested that it might be Celiac Sprue. I had never heard of this so I went back to my office and got on the internet and found your wonderful website and what seemed...
