  1. Hi everybody! My ankle has been swollen for 9 days now and it is getting worse (swelling is extending and becoming more painful. Small veins are breaking.) It is on one side only. Preliminary blood tests exclude gout, infection and the CRP levels for inflammation are within the normal range. Sonogram reveals no blood clots. X-rays reveal no break...
  2. Jenny-- the CRP is a marker for inflammation (you liver puts it out). But the inflammation could be anywhere in your body. My doctor told me that if the number is high, it can indicate Chron's disease (inflammation in the intestine) or heart disease. But it can also be from stuff like arthritis (inflammation in the joints). I don't know why yours specifies...
  3. Hi! I also had multiple sinus infections before going gluten-free. I never thought about a link before, but I think it makes sense. Our immune systems get suppressed by the celiac. And some of us have the "achilles sinus." Years ago I had the surgery on one side, and it did seem to help. And it also seems to matter where you live-- when I lived in...
  4. Having an official diagnosis will not change your day to day life at all-- it is the same in the end. You can't eat gluten either way. I think we are rightly all put together on this forum. We all the same problem to greater or lesser degrees and medicine does not understand us completely. The only difference might be knowing that you run higher risks...
  5. The headaches I got were absolutely bar none the worst symptom, as in most debilitating. And I am factoring in multiple bouts of cramping diarreah. They were the most painful thing. I would be on my knees, pulling my hair with tears streaming down my face. Nothing would touch them. Nothing. Even when I had my gallbladder out or my hysterectomy, they...
  6. OH-- has it happened yet? How did it go? And is the way to a man's heart really through his stomach?
  7. Oh-- I forgot some stuff: In the salad, you want to toss in some candied pecans (instead of croutons). You can buy these gluten-free and ready made or you can candy them yourself. I forgot to say you need to cut the chicken into small bits. I use boneless/skinless chicken breast. You are also supposed to cut the red peppers up into bits. I leave...
  8. How about this? It can be elegant. It is easy. First course-- salad with pears and maytag blue cheese (gluten-free!) and a citrus type vinagrette. spinach or lettuce pears, skinned and cut crumble the blue cheese over the salad and add the dressing made of vinegar, olive oil, fresh orange juice, a little lemon juice, salt and black pepper...
  9. Here is the audio link to the interview. Open Original Shared Link I was so sure he said "gluten" receptors! Either he misspoke or I misheard. At any rate, it is an interesting interview. He talks about somaliers and perfumers and also about the difference between french and american perfumes.
  10. I am currently CF. I have been reading about lectins and discovered a web-site that said 50% of celiacs cannot tolerate casein (Dogtor-J.) For me eliminating dairy has made almost a big of a difference as eliminating the gluten. I understand that casein is a protein and lactose is a sugar, but beyond that I am a little confused. When I mentioned...
  11. Today they were interviewing the author of "What the Nose Knows' on the radio, and he said that a few years ago, researchers had discovered "umami" receptors on the tongue-- special cells dedicated to perceiving a savory flavor, like in msg. He went on to say that we had "gluten" receptors. I was not clear if he meant these were the same thing or not. ...
  12. Hi all! Well, more genetic tests have come in and my mom, who is one of 18 brothers and sisters, came back with double genes. This means that all her brothers and sisters have at least a 75% chance of carrying these genes too, maybe more (there is a 25% unknown). I know this does not mean they all have full-blown celiac, but the gluten sensitivity genes...
  13. One "hidden" place where it can be is in the tocopherols. This is vitamin E and it can be derived from wheat. Often, if you ask a company, they cannot tell you where they get the tocopherol from. For me the shampoo and conditioner question is really hard. I feel they must be gluten free (I have DH, not to mention that I am a shower singer and I always...
  14. I don't know how useful this information is, but I think it is interesting. There is a gene-- the DQ7 gene-- that is found in about 2% of celiacs (European) and this gene is also called the narcolepsy gene. If you google it, you should find some hits. I have the DQ7 and I have a lot of sleep problems. Maybe you will find out he has that genotype...
  15. If you like shrimp these are two good ones: spring rolls-- You cut up some cucumber, carrots and thaw some big shrimp. You add some spinach leaves and fresh cilantro, a little lime juice and some thai sweet sauce (you can make it with fresh orange juice, vinegar, sugar, bird's eye peppers, garlic and a little xantan gum). You arrange everything artfully...
  16. I am down three more pounds today! It has slowed down. But I think that even after I hit the goal, I will still try to eat this way. Lisa
  17. You know, I didn't think about the sugars being different at all, but I think fructose and glucose are even different molecules, now that I think about it. And I suppose it could even be the food dyes in the m+ms! But I bet my ancestors didn't consume a ton of food dyes-- I don't think they ate a lot of processed foods at all. Okay-- I have a plan. ...
  18. Jestgar-- you ask an excellent question. The only thing I am sure about is that I feel better without dairy. I suppose it could be the chocolate, but here is my reasoning. It may be faulty, but so far my theory holds: When I was still eating tons of fruit but no dairy the bp numbers were low for me AND just like the gluten sensitivity, high blood...
  19. Hi! I have also been looking for shampoos. I find the burt's bees can be drying. I recently found another option that so far is pretty good-- Lush solid shampoo bars. Most all of them are safe. Godiva is is very nice, as is "new" and trichomania (coconut shampoo for dry hair). Their jungle conditioner doesn't have gluten either. Shampoos are hard...
  20. Laura-- he did give me a computer print out that reads like this: breakfast-- 30-40g carbs snack 1-- 15g carbs lunch-- 30-40g carbs snack 2- 15g carbs dinner-- 30-40g carbs snack 3- 15g carbs There were protein guidelines too, but I will have to look for the sheet of paper now buried on my desk. He made me an individual plan, but I think this...
  21. These are on the ROCK gluten free candy list for 2007. Here is the link: Open Original Shared Link However, contamination is always possible with candy that is manufactured in a plant that also processes WBOR. Hope you feel better soon!
  22. Thank you so much C! Yes-- going off dairy is pretty recent (about 1 month.) Maybe it is that. That had a pretty surprising result for me in a lot of ways. The bottom number of my BP dropped about 30 points for one thing. I am pretty restricted in my proteins-- chicken, egg whites (the yolks get me from the sulpher I think,) nuts, legumes and shrimp...
  23. Thanks for the reassurances! I really got scared there. I will stick with his plan then. I also got glutened at the dentist during that week, so the water is a good bet. I am also relieved to hear that 140 carbs is not too few (I was going by the recommended daily allowance percentages on the labels and it looked like he had me at about half of normal...
  24. Hi all. I started seeing a dietitian a little over a week ago because I have lots of food sensitivities and my diet is getting pretty complicated. I am supposed to lose 20 lbs. I am gluten-free, casein free, sulfite/fate free, nitrite/ate free with a side of no msg and very low sodium (for blood pressure). I am also sensitive to food dyes. Really I...
  25. I got an email from ACT today-- they were fast which I always take as a good sign becuase that means they know what is in there. It says: Thank you for contacting Chattem, Inc. regarding our product, ACT Restoring Mouthwash. All of our current ACT products are gluten-free. If we can be of further assistance, please write to us at P.O. Box 22...
