  1. Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food might straighten her out. It is not about gluten, but about the correlation between the rise of processed food and the rise of chronic disease, and discusses big lies about healthy carbs and unhealthy fats. It is very readable and informative. I know, I know, I'm repeating myself.
  2. I have heard that allergies will increase if the adrenals are fatigued, and celiac is very hard on the adrenals. Are you being treated for "weak adrenals" and thyroid problems? That might help a lot!
  3. Is your coworker aware that studies have shown there is no relationship between egg eating and cholesterol levels? And for that matter, no studies have shown that high cholesterol indicates or leads to heart disease in women? I hope you are able to buy free range fresh eggs. I get mine from someone nearby and I love to see the hens running around the...
  4. Howdy I am on the skinny side and have been doing this for 10 1/2 months and have lost about 5 pounds. My weight is pretty stable at the moment. My problem was overcoming a deeply ingrained sense that fat is bad and carbs are good. I was not used to eating fat and have been gradually increasing it over the months. So I would suggest buying higher...
  5. I was diagnosed with "osteopenia" about 12 years ago and told to eat Tums. Thanks a lot, doc. In 2007 a NP tested me for Vit D. It was below normal but not as bad as yours. I started supplementing and have been retested several times. My Vit D level did not increase until I started lying in the sun in my Vitamin D suit. Fortunately I have a very private garden...
  6. Hi, Yes, it's a surprise to see this thread pop up again! If you go to a doc, NP or naturopath who will test for adrenal fatigue, you will most likely do a one day saliva test, with four collections, to measure your adrenal output. If you read through the post, then you know that many docs belileve in "all or nothing" for the adrenals, and don't diagnose...
  7. Hi everyone I just read through the thread and a couple of things come to mind. First I have heard that hypothyroidism can lead to high cholesterol. Second, why, Pink Lady, do you think your numbers are high? Apparently there is NO LINK between high cholesterol in women of any age and heart disease. There are many folks out there who believe the...
  8. Thanks to everyone for the support. I am over it, and I can't really avoid one of my best friends! I think you got it right, I suspect she was feeling bad about something and took it out on me. That's one of the things friends are for.
  9. Wow, more than I eat! Although I eat 2 eggs a day also plus what I use in baking. Thanks, it helps to know that I'm eating "normally" for this diet. Olives sound really good, think I'll get some.
  10. I need to vent. Today I was accused of being anorexic because I am skinny. I eat as much as my system can handle, believe me. Then I was accused, by the same person, of being obsessed with food. And told that being gluten-free works for me because I think it does. Like this is all in my head. And told that people are always trying to blame their problems...
  11. Dawn I have had good luck with some kinds of homeopathic. I used one last summer when I got stung by a wasp and ended up with a milder than expected reaction to the sting. Also I feel arnica works for me. So I would go for it, but keep in mind many homeopathic pills are made with sugar and therefore not SCD legal.
  12. Hi Whitney, welcome. You can roast nuts yourself, but Elaine recommended buying them raw, since some nuts are commercially roasted with starch coating. Also, each version of BTVC has different info on introducing the diet because Elaine never made up her mind on the subject. IMO, if the intro in pecanbread is too hard, just go ahead and eat other legal...
  13. I don't know about your local group, but I have heard that most of the folks who attend the meetings of my local group have been spotted at supermarkets with shopping carts brimming with gluten.
  14. Hi Jan Very weak black coffee is allowed in the SCD.
  15. I read somewhere (here?) that the probios need something to eat, which is why you need to add a tablespoon of honey to the coconut milk in order to ferment it. It does come out thin, but tastes good.
  16. I don't know much about compounded T. My NP, who just switched me to Armour, told me many people can't handle it, possibly due to time release features.
  17. I was fed soy formula, too. Yuck. And have thyroid problems. We have to remember that for decades, women were automatically given milk-suppressing hormones right after delivery, and the babies were fed formula while still in the hospital. Breast-feeding was considered an unnecessary mess and mothers were given little or no help or encouragement. Good thing...
  18. My understanding is that compounded thyroid meds do not work well for everyone (myself included apparently). I am using armour which most definitely contains illegal dextrose, but otherwise seems to work way better than any other thyroid med I have been given in the past 30 years, so I figure it is worth it. And it is a tiny amount, it's not like I'm going...
  19. Gentleheart--I agree with you about not missing gluten, but missing dairy. I have tried making coconut milk yogurt from Natural Value canned CM, no guar gum. Trader Joe's also carries CM with no additives. I heated the coconut milk, added a tbsp of honey and stirred the contents of 4-5 probiotic capsules into it and fermented it for about 10 hours. No...
  20. Quit worrying. Tomatoes are canned the same way as fruit--processed in boiling water. If the BBQ sauce was hot when you put it in the jars--even better. If you added honey and/or vinegar, better yet as these act as preservatives. I make homemade chutney by cooking down peaches or apples, adding honey, spices and maybe vinegar. I just put it in sterilized...
  21. Me, too! I was starving and cheese always seemed safe and socially acceptable. Then I figured out it was making me foggy-headed and sleepy... Now, without dairy, I find myself wondering how much chicken or beef to eat at a meal. Four ounces seems like such a small amount, more seems like gluttony.
  22. Ali, just out of curiosity have you had your thyroid and adrenals checked? All this malabsorption takes a toll on the endocrine system and that contributes to fatigue. I know in my case getting the hormones right (still a work in progress) is likely helping as much as the diet.
  23. Speaking of fanatical adherence, I keep wondering what people are eating when they say they are on a modified SCD, a 95% SCD, or just plain cheat. I confess to an occasional dollop of tamari and a little turkey bacon. I couldn't care less if my vitamins are SCD legal, and for sure Armour Thryoid is not. I remember Shay saying she eats yams once a week or...
  24. I can't handle any dairy, including goat yogurt , butter and cheese. I do the SCD without it, no problem. And welcome, you are in the right place.
  25. I finally did read somewhere that Haas thought chocolate was chemically similar to cocaine. I think the only similarity is in the spelling of cocoa and cocaine. I was a chocoholic when I started the diet and went through withdrawal for about 2 weeks, then abruptly got over it. Don't miss it at all now. When I think about it, I remember feeling sick to...
