  1. Dawn--welcome to the thread. I also have hypothyroidism and adrenal issues. Sometimes I wonder which is affecting me--the endocrine system or the digestive system. I hope you start on the SCD soon. It's made a big difference for many of us who post here. I found after a few weeks that vegetables started to taste better, almost as if my taste buds had...
  2. I have read that there is a major problem with agave containing a lot of high-fructose corn syrup, something to avoid.
  3. I don't know if it's broke for life. I hope not. When I was about a month into this diet I figured out I had a problem with dairy and so far haven't been able to tolerate any of it--it makes me dull, foggy, and congested. I miss cheese.
  4. Please don't feel overwhelmed by the big SCD thread. I have been on the diet for almost 7 months and during that time the thread has twice become so inactive it's fallen to page 3 on the leaky gut list. And I missed having company!! Come and join us. Don't worry if your questions are redundant. Don't worry about reading the whole thing, although a lot...
  5. Paula You will be so happy after you get going on the diet. It's really not as strange as it seems. Once you eliminate corn, soy, grain and sugar, there are pretty much NO processed foods you can eat, so you eat meat, fruits, veggies, nuts, honey, eggs, yogurt, butter, cheese, olive oil and herbs and spices. Simple. Like Shay, I did not start with...
  6. I have 2 ponies, too, both about 16 hands and as well fed as yours look. I'd like to have them on gluten-free diets but I guess any pelleted horse food contains gluten as a binder. Boy, that is really off-topic! Glad you are sticking with the SCD. I hope it works for you.
  7. We grew pie pumpkins, buttercup squash and spaghetti squash in the garden. I have been making a simple baked custard with 2 cups cooked mashed squash, 3 eggs, 1/3 cup of honey, a sprinkle each of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. What did you put in the pumpkin smoothie? And BTW, Shay, we love you.
  8. I strongly recommend that you get a paper copy of your lab results and read it yourself.
  9. Hi April No, I have been on the SCD for 6 months. I have been feeling much better since early August, so last week was a setback. The funny thing I realized is this: the fatigue, blahs, gut inflammation and unpredictable digestion were all my default settings for years, even after a year on a gluten-free diet. Only recently have I felt better, and fortunately...
  10. I'm changing the subject a bit... I've had a bad week. Not fully healed, obviously. Had intestinal pain for a week. fever for one day, been tired, slight runny nose, headache. Since I didn't want to a doctor to put me on antibiotics and order a CAT scan and colonoscopy, I tried eating a lot of garlic, drinking peppermint tea and kombucha, taking probiotics...
  11. I think you'll get more responses if you post your question on the "SCD picking up the thread" again thread. Some of us are on the SCD and dairy free. IMO it makes no sense to keep eating all the bad stuff that's NOT on the diet, just because you can't eat the dairy products that ARE on the diet. Are those your horses??
  12. I got stung a couple of weeks ago on the finger. A couple of tobacco chewers happened to be right there and put tobacco on the sting. (No they didn't spit! It came out of a little tin). After I got home I used a homeopathic treatment called apis mell. I had the mildest reaction I have had in years. Ken--Hope it feels better soon.
  13. I read the article yesterday on Yahoo health news and today worked in the garden in my Vitamin D suit (we have a very private garden).
  14. Susie--sorry I spelled your name wrong. Proof reading failure.
  15. I finally talked to a customer service rep at the place that makes Muir Glen canned organic tomatoes and sauces. She said they DO NOT ADD ANY SUGAR, STARCH OR ANY INGREDIENT NOT LISTED ON THE LABEL. They use steam to peel the tomatoes and do not use any ingredient to adjust PH or sweetness. She said if citric acid is used, it is on the label. She said she...
  16. Hi Susue It must be really hard to have gut issues during pregnancy. When I was pregnant (eons ago) I lived on wheat and dairy. Pregnancy was uneventful, delivery easy, but my son was colicy and cried for months, even though I breast fed exclusively for 5 months. I am sure now that had I been gluten-free while nursing, he would have been happier. Anyway...
  17. Back when I still ate sugar and milk, I had zero problem with Breyers. My gut says it is gluten-free. And mostly chemical free, I might add. A good choice if you're going to eat ice cream.
  18. I am into my 20th gluten free month and still healing. I got a bit better at first then things went downhill until I went on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. This is a grain-free, sugar-free healing diet for gut ailments. It has made a huge difference. Depending on how long you have been malnourished, you may have damage to your endocrine system, nervous...
  19. Hi Deb I assume you are still reading he thread. I thought of another way we have gotten free produce in the past. A lot of farmers allow gleaning after they have harvested. This means you can go into the field and collect the stuff they leave behind. We have done this and gotten enough winter squash and cabbage to last several months. I know of growers...
  20. I do use Muir Glen organic canned tomatoes occasionally. I emailed them and got a "form letter" response. I will call them tomorrow. IMO, Elanie made a mistake on the diet soda thing. I would not use any artificial sweeteners. They are basically foreign chemicals to our bodies (again, just my opinion). I put sparkling water in my grape juice, orange juice...
  21. Hi Deb Welcome to the thread. The financial part of the SCD is something I ponder a lot. I feel very lucky that I can afford to eat this way and hope I never have to go back to those cheap food substitutes grain and sugar. I don't know what kind of shopping you have been doing, but if you are not employed, than hopefully you have more time to find...
  22. Yes I think its okay to take. Both asprirn and ibuprofin can cause problems for damaged guts. They make me feel like I've swallowed ground glass. Acetominophen doesn't hit the stomach hard. I took it for several days last April following a mishap. It may not be SCD legal but look how small the tablets are. Pain can cause more stress than a bit of corn starch...
  23. I think you are in a unique situation with international travel and having to deal with food from very different cutures, despite globalization. When I read about your almond problems I wonder if the almonds were treated with wheat prior to roasting or processing. Apparently Planters does this to flavor mixed nuts, so maybe it happens in China, too. On...
  24. Cici You might enjoy reading Michael Pollan's book In Defense of Food. It is about the transistion to the western diet of processed food and the subsequent rise of chronic disease. It validated what I felt after four months on the SCD, and might help you see why the diet makes so much sense. So how's it going? Have you started the diet yet?
  25. Okay, this is one of my SCD pet peeves. No surprise to anyone who's read my earlier posts. We are relying on decades old, second hand anecdotal evidence. Can anyone do better? Are there really laws that say canners can add undeclared sugar and starch? If so, why aren't diabetics raising holy heck? Anyone want to investigate further? I'll contact the...
