  1. Hi I have been hanging out on the specific carbohydrate diet thread, and have just decided to try dairy free to see if that will keep me off the slippery slope to D. In light of your question about how long to see symptoms, I am wondering about symptoms of casein intolerance vs. lactose intolerance. I realize that one is an intolerance to protein and...
  2. I thought I sent a reply two days ago, but it's not here! I assume it's my fault, or does that happen sometimes? Yesterday was my first 100% dairy free day in a while. I'll stick with it for a while and see what happens. It's not too hard with a bit of advance planning. If I have good luck with no dairy, I may start to add rice back into my diet. In...
  3. What are SBOs? I'm sure its obvious but I'm drawing a blank... And are you concerned about nematods and other organisms in the soil? I often eat stuff straight from the garden, and recently have eaten fresh dandelion greens without washing. I just kind of wipe them off, but I wonder if it's a good idea.
  4. It probably sounded like I would be eating oatmeal with sugar for breakfast today, but I am still on the diet. I did add a teaspoon of illegal hot sauce to my stirfry last night and for lunch today found a container of split pea soup in the freezer made from unsoaked peas. Despite my misgivings about the tone of the book, I do feel better. My teeth and...
  5. Here I am after 2 1/2 weeks on the SCD (98%) thinking that rice is not my problem. I am wondering if dairy is the problem. I have been telling myself for years that I do not have a problem with dairy. My brother looks at me askance. He has a problem with dairy. And corn. And gluten. Maybe I need to give dairy free a real chance, like not just for a day....
  6. Here in the USA we have to be careful what kind of parmesan we buy--virtually all grated parmesan contains "cellulose" to prevent caking which is often wheat flour. Do you think you got glutened?
  7. Thank you Nancy. I checked out the Loren website and will continue reading. The Paleo diet sounds more limited than the SCD, but I think we all need to find a place where we are comfortable--that's what this is all about. I also want to read more about beef before buying any--haven't eaten it in years. I hear Michael Pollen in his latest book gives compelling...
  8. Hi everyone I have been hanging out on the specific carb diet thread. It sounds similar to the paleo diet. I have been on SCD for 2 weeks at about 98-99% adherence. It's mostly fruit, veggies, meat, eggs, some dairy, nuts and honey. It has made me aware that most of the processed, packaged chemical stuff we call food these days really isn't. I have...
  9. I am, I have to admit, loving this diet, or I wouldn't still be on it after 14 days. All the cheese and veggies I can eat!! This evening for dinner I had a small salad with yogurt honey dressing, a big mound of cooked fresh kale from the garden with more yogurt, some asparagas and a piece of salmon. I also invented a recipe for coconut custard bars: 2...
  10. If that was a soapbox speech it was a great one. I am gaining a whole new outlook on what food really is because of this diet, and most of the stuff at the supermarket is not food. I read somewhere, In The Gluten Connection maybe, that the human diet has undergone two huge transformations in the past 2 million years or so. The first was around 10000 years...
  11. [To be able to live somewhere where they eat a simple wholesome diet and don't suffer the illness and disease that we do, would actually be bliss, as the stuff that we find so hard to resist would not be available! Who is better off, I ask myself, them or us?] Ah, yes, I have often said I want to go live on the gluten-free island. Since sarting this diet...
  12. Ali- Sorry about the weight problem. My weight is normally pretty good. I started gaining this winter after years of not. As soon as I started the SCD the weight gain stopped, probably because I am not looking for a gluten-free cookie every 5 minutes. I've been at this for a whole 10-11 days and today for the first time in 11 days, I had a bit a digestive...

ARCHIVED How Do We Make This Better?

Can I bring a new thought to this very interesting thread? What about the financial interests of big Agri business and the food industry? White flour, IMHO, is a "food substitute" along with sugar, coffee and tobacco which have been referred to as food substitutes used to give the working class enough energy to perform poverty level jobs that funnel ever...
  14. While researching the web to find out more about SCD I found the following about the benefits of using enteric coated peppermint oil to kill small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. So why the torture of SCD? If anyone has or knows of evidence that SCD really works, let us know! In the meantime, I really do feel better not eating all the carbs. Open Original...
  15. How did she make the organic raw dark chocolate??
  16. Is 24 hour yogurt fermenting a lot of hooey? According to a rep at the Springfield Creamery, makers of Nancy's yogurt, yes. They have researched the idea that yogurt must be cultured for 24 hours to remove all of the lacose and say there is no basis for this claim. They believe it is incorrect. According to their research, and these people are yogurt experts...
  17. Boy I have been craving a bit of chocolate. There is a great company out of Ashland. Oregon called Dagoba that makes organic chocolate bars in a gluten-free facility. Of course there is an open bar in the cupboard. I usually have the munchies all day every day, a result of malnutrition perhaps. So now I am trying to figure out what to eat in between meals...
  18. Interesting about the cholesterol in the folks in Siberia. I wish my husband, who had low cholesteol to begin with, would quit the Lipitor. Yes, the economy would collapse without grain. Grain storage is essential to maintain a large, socially stratified society. The powers that be have much at stake and keeping the huddled masses consuming cheap stored...
  19. Hi Ali I'm so glad you read my post and gave me some great answers. The word "annoying" caught my eye because I wonder how much of the SCD is based on science and how much is religion. Being on this diet at about 98% (I'm still eating mung bean sprouts and turkey bacon) for 3 days has given me new insight into the human diet. Without any grains or sugars...
  20. Thank you to everyone who posts here. I am learning so much. I, too, am embarking on the SCD because after one year on a gluten-free diet, I still have problems. The gluten-free diet was a miracle for me. Instant relief from years of digestive issues, insomnia, joint pain, restless leg syndrome and so on. However, my Vit D level is still low, and my...
  21. If you have low blood pressure you may want to check out the threads on Adrenal Fatigue, whch apparently has close ties to thyroid probems and celiac. From what I have read, low blood pressure can be a symptom of pottasium/sodium imbalance which is controlled by an adrenal hormone. I have a question for y'all: If one has autoimmune thyroid disease...

    ARCHIVED Endoscopy Clarification

I love this forum!!! Doctors, I don't love so much. I agree with the last few posts, yes, you need a new doctor. Don't we all? I read somewhere, I think on Dr. Kenneth Fine's website, that the best diagnostic tool is a gluten-free diet. If you feel better, there you are.
  23. I started on Digest Gold, a strong enzyme supplement, after reading in Dr. Peter Green's book Celiac Disease, a Hidden Epidemic, that pancreatic insufficiency can be a reason for not getting well on a gluten-free diet. Like you, I remained low on Vit D despite heavy supplementation. The day after I took the enzymes for the first time, I noticed a dramatic...
  24. I had a needle biopsy done on a thyroid nodule many years ago and it was no big deal. It also didn't produce any results. I remember the doc saying, well, if its cancer, we can't tell, but thyroid cancer grows slowly so something else will probably get you first. Years, later, here I am, wishing they had checked me for ceilac disease!!!!!
  25. My advice is make sure you get copies of all test results and read them. If there are abnormalities, find out what they are. I did this and discovered several things that no one bothered to mention to me, like low iron, low WBC and some liver abnormalities including high billirubin. I also itch like crazy sometimes and discovered that itching can be a symptom...
