  1. I don't think this is how it works. Your antibodies were sky-high, a result of the inflamatory response and your immune system going crazy working over time. When you quit eating the offending substance--gluten-- the inflamation and immune system calm down. Since you will then have normal antibody levels, your body is no longer in constant fight mode and...
  2. I have heard about two physical therapists and one LMT in Oregon who are claiming to heal leaky gut caused by gluten intolerance. If you go to one, let us know if it works!!
  3. You may be a candidate for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. The book is called Breaking the Vicious Cycle. Although the author says the diet will "cure" celiac, we know this is not true, but hopefully the diet will allow the gut to heal from the damage done by gluten and perpetuated by bad bacteria. The diet consists of meat, fish and fowl, eggs, veggies...
  4. 1 cup dry red lentils 1/4 tsp cumin powder 1/4 tsp turmeric 1/4 tsp coriander add water, cook until soft. Salt to taste. Lemon juice? Yum.
  5. Heck, no. I am so happy to be gluten-free. If I am accidentally glutened, even a trace, I experience insomnia. The prospect of losing half a night's sleep is plenty of incentive to be very, very careful.
  6. I've heard about a physical therapist in Portland, I think his name is Joe Keeney, who is doing therapeutic bodywork to help heal leaky gut caused by gluten intolerance. Let us know if you find him and try it out. Also, continuing problems can be caused by overgrowth of bad bacteria or protozoa. If this is the case, probiotics might help.
  7. Hmmm Last week I got glutened for the first time in a while. I never eat out and was eating the same old fruits/vegs/honey/chicken/eggs/nuts EXCEPT for a tin of herring that the company called gluten-free. I have never eaten this brand of fish before and cannot imagine where else the gluten could have come from. I wrote to the company (which can remain...
  8. You could have adrenal fatigue. Quite a bit has been posted on this subject under Related Disorders and Research.
  9. Gluten could be your problem. Please be aware that blood testing is NOT always right. False negatives are very, very common. And many people are gluten-intolerant but do not have Celiac Disease, therefore do not test positive on blood tests. You may want to go on a strict gluten-free diet to see if you feel better. You may notice a difference right away....
  10. Wegman's. You lucky thing, you. I wish Wegman's would expand out here to the west coast. pele (formerly from Greece, NY)
  11. I think you might enjoy Shauna James Ahern's blog and book Gluten-free Girl. She is a major foodie and writes wonderfully about her pre- and post-celiac discoveries of food beyond what she grew up with. You can find her blog at glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com Things do get better. There are lots of great, simple, non-grain foods out there waiting for you...
  12. Apparently malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is far more prevelant in celiacs than in the rest of the population. My mother, whom we believe to have been an undiagnosed celiac, was diagnosed with melanoma at age 28. She died.
  13. A quick search of this site will tell you that many vegetarians begin to crave meat when they go gluten free. So hold on to your hat, it may be a wild ride. And keep an open mind. In the meantime, Gardenburger makes a few gluten-free meat substitutes. Check their website to see which ones.
  14. Hi Sue I have to admit I am not a super-organized person. My sock drawer is a mess and I rarely follow recipes. So I can't give you much avice on organizing recipe and diet info. I am eating a pretty simple diet (Specific Carb Diet minus the dairy). This diet imeans no grains, no sugar, no soy, no corn, no potatoes, therefore no processed foods. Once...
  15. Hi Ursa M, I read your recommendation of Carlson's Cod Liver Oil on another thread and went to buy some, but didn't because it has only a few hundred units of Vit D per dose. I bought Carlson's Vit D supplement, 2000 units, instead. Is the Vit D in cod liver oil better than the supplements? Is there a difference? I have had my Vit D level checked 3...
  16. Someday all of these doctors will get sick or injured and guess what? They will have to go to the doctor!! May they find one of their own caliber.
  17. Hi Linda I know nothing about UC except that the author of BTVC is pretty convinced that SCD will help, so maybe you are on the right track and just need to give it time. I take Digest Gold, too. I started about 4 months ago and it helped a lot. I don't think I need it anymore so probably won't buy more.
  18. Hi Deb It's wonderful to hear from so many people on the SCD, and several of us started arond the same time. I am very, very careful about gluten, but not as worried about the SCD. I follow it 99+% but don't worry about fillers in vitamins or probiotics. IMO, and y
  19. Brenda, The 24 hour yogurt process is alleged to destroy lactose, not casein. I called Nancy's Yogurt about this and they said based on their extensive research with yogurt production, lactose and lactase, that culturing for 24 hours to eliminate lactose has no scientific basis. I have a few other rants about the diet, too. Why are mung, fava, garbanzo...
  20. When you were a gluten-eater, your body was producing antibodies in response to inflammation and your immune system was working hard to reduce the inflammatory response. Now that you are nearly gluten-free, this is no longer happening and thus, your body can react to a few milligrams of gluten. Make sense? Dr. Peter HR Green explains this in detail in his...
  21. Hi Molly and Brenda I'm so glad you are posting on a new SCD thread. The old thread kind of slipped away. I've been on the SCD for about 2 months also. I feel much better. Although my digestion is not perfect, it is a lot better. I have been able to determine that I am casein intolerant and have a lot more energy since giving up cheese and yogurt, whch...
  22. Very funny! I was always mentally compare IBS to a doctor telling someone with a headache that they have painful cranium syndrome.
  23. I was chatting with a Chiropractor/acquaintance recently and mentioned celiac disease. She, too, asked me about the meds. I saw her a few days later and she had obviously looked it up and was embarrassed. I'm happy she is better educated now! Is your colonoscopy to check for microscopic colitis? I was just reading Dr. Fine's essay on enterolab and he says...
  24. According to Dr. Peter Green in his book Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic, melanoma is significantly more common in known celiacs than the rest of the population. My mother died of it at age 42. My brother, who is gluten-intolerant, didn't really care about strict adherence--he'd eat birthday cake at work and have a few beers now and then. He read Dr...
  25. Ali I've been thinking about your comments since yesterday and I think you make a lot of sense, especially when you say that the so-called normal range for antibody tests may well indicate disease. I remember reading somewhere that conventional medicine has pretty much decided to disregard postive anti-gliadin results because so many people have the antibodies...
