  1. Actually, you have a point. Human civilization (complex, straftified society) cannot exist without grain. Grain can be grown and stored for future consumption, freeing up time for people to do other things besides gather food. Grain is a valuable commodity that allows some members of society to accumulate wealth and thus exert power over others. Grain, especially...
  2. stopthethyroidmadness.com will give you several links to info on adrenal fatigue, testing and treatment.
  3. Arrggghh is right. It can be very frustrating. A tip on eliminating soy: quit eating processed foods and stick to whole foods for a while. Plain veggies, fruit, meat, nuts, brown rice, quinoa. Dr. Peter Green, in his book Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic, lists these reasons why people do not get better on a gluten-free diet: 1) Lactose intolerance...
  4. Jamie, What makes this easy for me is feeling so much better. I went to the BBQ on Monday and had a great time with people I hadn't seen in a while. I watched them pig out and I ate only the small lunch I brought with me and I felt great. Back in the old days I would have felt miserable for the rest of the day with a belly full of gluten. That helps me not...

    ARCHIVED Starving

Hi Meline I am on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), found on the web at breakingtheviciouscycle.com There is a thread here under Leaky Gut Issues on the SCD, probably down to page 3 or 4 by now. I would love to see the thread revived. The purpose of SCD is to heal the gut that has been damaged by disease. The diet eliminates foods that are not...
  6. I know, I've been invited to a potluck BBQ tomorrow (M Day) and have pretty much decided to just take my usual lunch and totally ignore the BBQ food. A lot of it is going to be, IMO, unappetizing anyway. Nothing organic, lots of processed, packaged stuff, like cake from a box of cake mix with transfat frosting. So I will be very happy with my banana and maybe...

    ARCHIVED Starving

I'm not thirsty either--unless its a 100 degrees and I've been outside all day. I don't know how many calories I consume, but when I was eating gluten, it was 2500-3000 per day. Now, on the Specific Carb Diet, I feel like there is nothing to eat, not because I am intolerant, but because the diet is so restricted. My stomach feels like an empty cavern...
  8. I have been told that some people have been turned down for LIFE insurance because they were diagnosed celiacs.

    ARCHIVED Newbie

Hi Steven Celaic disease and gluten intolerance are very common, but appartently no one's told the doctors yet! Here is a link to an informative video on youtube from U of Cal. It's 90 minutes long and well worth the time. Open Original Shared Link You might also want to pick up a copy of Dr. Peter Green's book Celiac Disease: a Hidden Epidemic
  10. If can take a while to get better. Months, even years, so hang in there. Have you checked out the website Stop the Thyroid Madness? It has pages of info about thyroid and adrenal function. If you can spend some time reading through it, you may have a few things to tell your alt doc about. Open Original Shared Link

    ARCHIVED Starving

I don't know why, Meline, but I am starving, too, so you are not alone. I am on the Specific Carb Diet and dropped dairy recently. If I am home I eat non-stop. I weigh about two pounds less than I did when I went gluten-free in March 2007. Lately I have been snacking on dried pineapple and peanut butter inbetween meals. I go through pb and dried fruit by...
  12. It must be rough to be in college with everyone around you eat sub sandwiches, pizza and the like. How about trying rice cakes and peanut butter? Or trail mix? I'd suggest making your own from a combo of nuts, seeds and dried fruit that you like and you are sure have no been treated with flour. Canned sardines or tuna? Hard boiled eggs and a banana?
  13. Hey you M & Ms (plain) are supposedly safe. So are Nestles semisweet chocoalte chips. If you want a treat, see if you can find Dagoba organic chocolate bars. They are expensive but made in a gluten-free facility in Oregon. Celiac doesn't really suck. Think of it as a great way to learn what food REALLY is. (Hint: is doesn't come highly processed...
  14. Sorry you had such a bad experience. I have a couple of bags of lovely, delicious frozen strawberries that I don't dare eat. My reaction also felt like gluten, not an allergy. When I picked them I asked if straw was used and she told me rye straw. I stupidly thought that was okay, since it wasn't wheat straw which common around here. But rye is a gluten grain...
  15. I have to agree with Sneezydiva. See a different doctor for just the reasons she states. Celiac testing is notoriously unreliable with some studies showing blood tests can have 60-70% false negatives. Besides, if you do not have celiac disease the tests will be negative even if you are severely gluten-intolerant. Another thing--even if this doc is a great...
  16. Hi Deborah I have to throw in my two cents worth on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. There is a thread here on it which seems to have slipped to page two. I have been on this diet for over a month, started after a year gluten free. It includes meat, fish, poultry, vegs, fruit, nuts, honey, yogurt, cheese, butter and some kinds on beans. NO grains of...
  17. Hi Lucy I'm surprised therre haven't been more replies to your questions. Are you still checking in and reading this? Yes, you can develop celiac later in life. There is a great one hour video on youtube.com that says the most common demographic being diagnosed are women in their 40s and 50s. If you go to You Tube and search celiac disease you will...
  18. Hi Ali Well, here we are on another thread. I tried to get some info on the metabolic diet from the web, but I am getting more info from you! I guess I am an anglo-saxon type--tall, pale, blonde with English/Scottish heritage. So I must be a protein eater, too. Today I went to see my physical therapist who told me about the Body Ecology Diet. I spent...
  19. I bet you will stick with it if it makes you feel better. If it doesn't work, I hope you don't torture yorself for too long. I have to say that now that I am off sugar, chocolate (don't crave it any more), DAIRY!! and grains, I feel much, much better. I was in denial about dairy for a long time. My diet is SO different from 14 months ago when I ate mostly...

    ARCHIVED Doctor In Corvallis, Or

You might contact the Eugene Gluten Intolerance Group. There is a nurse in Corvallis with Celiac who might be able to steer you in the right direction. They may know how to reach her since she was a speaker at one of their meetings last year. Open Original Shared Link
  21. Ali, you said it well. I think food tastes so much better these days since I am not eating the above mentioned, although I am missing cheese. Last night I mixed up some peanut butter, honey and coconut, rolled it into balls, refrgerated it and called it candy. Good thing I didn't make much becasue the plate is empty. And good thing I'm getting a lot of exercise...
  22. Yes, the mouth and tongue symptoms match the descriptions of strawberry allergy found on various websites. I had no mouth symptoms at all but I am reluctant to try strawberries again because I sure didn't get much sleep last night. Here's a link to a really scary article about coating strawberries with wheat gluten to extend shelf life: Open Original...
  23. Hi Katifer IMO this diet should be great for kids, and at 17 months, yours isn't old enough to demand the stuff advertised on TV. My experience with starting the diet is that for the first time in my life I was eating only unprocessed (or minimally processed)food. Makes you realize that most of the stuff on the shelves is full of chemicals, additives...
  24. I know it has been a while since this topic came up. I am reviving it as we approach strawberry season. Last year in June I had been gluten free for about 3 months. The local U-pick strawberry places use straw, and the strawberries gave me D, so I quit eating them, but already had a few bags of berries for off season use. I tried a few around Christmas...
  25. How about a plain chicken breast and some fruit and yogurt for breakfast? Sometimes I saute two chicken breasts and have the leftover as a snack later. Some people will even have a hamburger patty for breakfast. It doesn't have to be traditional breakfast food, which was milk and cereal for me for years. Have you tried making any of the SCD legal "cookies...
