ARCHIVED Wellshire Farms Warning From Chicago Tribune
pele posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is a link to an article from the Chicago Tribune titled "Children at Risk from Food Roulette" dated November 21, 2008. Open Original Shared Link This is a very disturbing article about packaged food incorrectly labeled "gluten-free", children sickened by it, and the refusal of the USDA, FDA or manufacturer to do anything about it. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Hey everyone, While drifting through the www I stumbled across this website. It has a bunch of info on the SCD including a section with Elaine's answers to many questions. Nothing earthshaking, but interesting: Open Original Shared Link -

Howdy and welcome! I just finished reading a quote attributed to Elaine in which she says the SCD is NOT a low-carb diet, but it could be depending on which allowed foods you eat. So you could make the SCD a higher-carb diet by eating more fruit and veggies and things like honey, lentils and split peas. I don't think I have ever had fatigue from the... -

It sounds like you are already on a good diet--better than I was when I started the SCD! What kind of protein do you eat? -

I went to a lecture by a functional medicine MD last week and he talked about food rotation, so I am curious. And I immediately worried because I eat eggs every day! In my unofficial, non-medical opinion, it is probably fine to not worry about rotation in the short run. It is more important to get the illegal starches and sugars out of the diet. Once... -

Thank you, Mia, for mentioning this again. Elaine did not "require" an intro. She made certain recommendations for people with severe diarrhea and other people have formulated intros for autistic children. I am constantly amazed at how many people on this forum are so concerned with following a certain introduction to the diet. I would say only do an intro... -

I sounded just like you about chocolate in my first two weeks. I wanted to make things with unsweetened chocolate and honey, but didn't. Hang in there, the craving goes away. Chocolate is addictive and when you have kicked it, you will be fine. Fruits and nuts are LEGAL on the SCD. By all means take some legal food with you on your flights, so you are... -

Actually, I think it is good there. A lot of people look at the recipe section and never the leaky gut section, and they will now find out about the SCD, which some of them probably need. I just heard a story about a celiac writing to a sugar company because she was convinced their sugar contained gluten because it makes her sick! Let's remind each other... -

Hi Brenda, long time no hear! Thanks for the update on how you are doing. I am enjoying lots of raw veggies, and I am sad that the garden is pretty much finished except for kale and chard. I find raw vegetables very easy to digest. Funny how we were always told to eat crackers or toast for an upset stomach. I have been losing a steady 1/2 lb a month... -

Some gluten-free vanilla extract is sugar or syrup based, rather than alcohol based. You want to avoid the sugar kind. -

My favorite snack: Peanut butter balls 1 cup all natural peanut butter (no additives except salt) 1/3 cup honey 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut Mix together. Shape into 1 inch balls with damp hands. Freeze. Eat. Sometimes I make them with ground almonds, walnuts or pecans and flavor with maple flavoring. When I was traveling, I mixed the peanut... -

Thanks, everyone, for reading the article about fecal bacteria. I am totally confused about probiotics. I appreciate the insights you've posted here. -

Another beverage: lemonade made with honey. Adrenal fatigue--me, too. A year ago I had a big bronze patch on my abdominal skin, a sign of adrenal collapse. My dear GI doc scoffed and said I was fine. -

Ground turkey, winter squash, applesauce, fresh pear, fried eggs. And that was just today. I only like local farm eggs, so if the supply dries up over the holidays (likely) then I will substitute more turkey, or ground beef. I aso eat fresh greens or cooked carrots sometimes, and if I am cheating, turkey bacon. -
It's pretty hard to imagine living gluten-free without the internet.

Regarding introducing the diet--a topic of many posts, I checked Elaine's book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, 11th edition published in 2004 and found the following on page 71: "www.breaking theviciouscycle.info is ONLY official website and the most authoritative source of information. There is no specified schedule for introducing foods with the exception... -

Hi Dawn Fruit juice diluted with sparkling water sounds better then diet soda. Peppermint herb tea is good, hot or iced. V-8 juice is on the illegal list. As far as eating nut butter or anything on the legal list that may be hard to digest, try it and see. The farther along you are timewise, the better you will be able to interpret what your body... -

Valda If you have read the whole thread, then you know I struggled at first with the loss of chocolate and tamari sauce. I had only about an ounce of chocolate in the first two weeks then the craving went away. Other than that, my "cheating" consists of an occasional dollop of tamari (still) and the rare 1/2 teaspoon of illegal vanilla flavoring. Neither... -

I have a question about coconut mlk. I read somewhere that canned coconut milk is hydrogenated. Anyone have info on this? I haven't used coconut milk except when visiting family about 1 month into the diet. It did not agree with me and I am reluctant to try it again. -
The most commonly eaten nightshades are tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and potatoes. Sweet potatotes do not appear on the lists. Here is a link to more info Open Original Shared Link How about using winter squash or spicy lentils in some holiday dishes? It's fun to break tradition and experiment.

Dawn--just jump in with both feet and start the diet! If doing the intro sounds too intimidating then do what many of us have done, simply quit eating foods not on the diet. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around you won't miss the stuffing at all. I have an aversion to holidays, birthdays and all sorts of get-togethers, not because I can't pig out at the...
