  1. good 'starter' popcorn method (well, works for me) - roughly 1:3 oil-to-popcorn (similar to what it says on the popcorn package; I use olive oil, my mother used pan drippings - so yes, bacon fat is yummy!!). I use a stockpot on the stove top. Put oil in pot with 3 kernels of popcorn, cover with lid, set heat on medium (I use "7" out of "1-12" on my stove...
  2. wow, great accumulated wisdom! It is HARD to balance housework and sanity for most of us. Sounds like you are taking steps in the right direction I really had no clue on housework (my mother was a hoarder, but at least did cook) well into my 30s until I found Open Original Shared Link, a free system that helps me cope & taught me a LOT -...
  3. wow hang in there! a few thoughts - food, if you're near a trader joe's they have pre-cooked ready-to-eat (or ready-to-heat) items that could work (brown rice, some of the indian side dishes, etc). pricier than from scratch, but could help short term. Also, some frozen veggies are good merely thawed - for example, peas. Don't even have to cook...
  4. although time consuming, sometimes taking a more direct role in your own healthcare is often helpful from the sense of control alone, much less from the (hopefully) more targeted care that should result. Some drs are open to being educated - if so, gathering a few studies could help. Another approach is to network via local celiac group and/or friends...
  5. if you have multiple sensitivities, also consider food and/or vitamin inter-actions. I went about 2 yrs where anything but the salt deodorants gave me a rash Then I stopped taking vitamin supplements (okay, not a step I'd recommend to everyone) and suddenly could tolerate 'regular' (eg chemical) deodorant - as long as it's fragrance free! Sunblock...
  6. Hey, could you share name and/or town of store/bakery? Will happily travel for provisions, especially yummy gluten-free ones Thanks!!
  7. yay for peeps! now for the really important thing - how long should you open the package for. Yah, I like my peeps 'aged' - the texture is so much better when they're slightly stale . Any advice for the perfect amount of stale-ness?
  8. also on allergic girl blog check out her "the Cheers experience" link Open Original Shared Link- it's her protocol for eating out. You may have to scroll to the top of your screen to see the main part. She has multiple anaphylactic allergies so is really careful.
  9. One small caution - I think it was San-J, anyway at least one brand whose regular tamari is wheat free has a low-sodium tamari that is not wheat-free - go figure! But it is labeled. Will have to try Ginza when in the neighborhood. Another CT restaurant - yesterday ate at Gabrielle's in Centerbrook (near Essex) - we made res on open table; Gabriells...
  10. Saturday at WalMart, Neutrogena Body Lotion had an oats (or was it barley - sorry didn't write it down) ingredient listed, but the fragrance free body emulsion didn't.
  11. My DH called company and rep said the glaze has been gluten-free since Nov 07. Also said "thank goodness they finally changed it" We enjoyed at a group event Saturday. Cleaning up, I saw that the ingredient label (with a 2004 date) includes "wheat starch" - but I did not have a reaction -- okay, I had a reaction of horror to the ingredient list...
  12. agree w/toaster comment did you put anything on the bread? do you know that whatever topping you used is okay with you (eg have had the topping w/o bread & been fine?) Or the topping could have cc (did anyone else in household use on gluten bread or together w/butter and not use separate spreaders, etc). Good luck solving!
  13. me too - car sickness as a kid, gradually not as noticeable as an adult, but still present. maybe "they" should add motion sickness to the neurological symptoms of celiac? Yes the smaller the vehicle or further away from the drive wheels, the worse it would be. I commuted by train for 15 yrs, it took 6 or 7yrs before I could read without too much motion...
  14. Hi - didn't see a similar post, but I bet I'm not the first for this to happen to. Yesterday our house was on 'broker open house' (just realtors tromp through) - our realtor also had a house down the block on open house. I didn't even think about this, but the realtor provided food for the brokers - and left us leftovers on a paper plate in the fridge...
  15. No knowledge of Mohegan Sun restaurants - try calling the concierge at their top on-site hotel & ask them?? Or the "Eggs up Grill" the gluten-free restaurant in Portland CT, that's not so super far away, might have insight. Good luck and happy celebrating! Or Aleia's in Old Saybrook CT, same concept - close enough that they might know something. ...
  16. Looks great Ken! Don't know if you want to add, 'for more information, visit Open Original Shared Link ' If the restaurant is really going to take gluten-free seriously, they might as well get the positive publicity! Of course having suggested this, I realize that I have no idea if GFRAP has representatives in Hawaii - if not perhaps you can be...
  17. Thanks for all the guidance! unlikely to be cc, as it was a new stick of butter and we had no bread in the house at the time. But I am learning to get vigilant on how things leave their container & whether an implement 'double dips' or not. My mother used to get livid if you didn't use the butter knife (instead used your own knife) - foreshadowing...
  18. Kassandra and Carla, thanks so much! The calcium & vitD alone I tried first time last night & seem to be tolerating fine. At least that suggests I can take some supplements I think I'll stick with this one for now and start trial and error next week for the rest of the vitamin & mineral world
  19. check out Open Original Shared Link to see what they have Also check with whatever SF-based celiac societies you can find There is a Morton's in SF and in San Jose. Just ate at Morton's Steakhouse in Stamford CT last night - they have a laminated list of *everything* on the menu sorted into not gluten-free and gluten-free categories, and truly...
  20. Good insight - may be time for me to give up on the multi format! I do have a Kirkman sample with the pair of calcium & vitD only, I'll try that next (haven't done yet), maybe will work better Fortunately I have been fine on iron now that I eat more veggies (esp broccoli and bok choy) & have meat at lunch more often.
  21. Hey, semi-random question from a newbie: Anyone have trouble with vitamins, and how do I go about pinpointing? Just tried my sample-size Kirkman labs gluten-free & soy free multi-vitamin yesterday, had a mild reaction (as in, I'm still functional but noticable skin burning sensations, mild D, bit sweaty last night) - on purpose I waited 'til...
  22. Just saw gluten-free brownie mix for first time in CT Trader Joe's (very tasty, subbed butter for oil & whole milk for water, yum). Westport CT store seems to be gradually adding or at least highlighting gluten-free items. In general their allergy labeling is pretty comprehensive, usually mentions what the plant processes & what else is processed...
  23. FYI - didn't see this topic when I did a search - hopefully isn't a repeat. Had a reaction Saturday to a "safe" cooked-at-home from raw ingredients meal. We'd run out of regular butter so on the rice I used some DH had from baking last month - was unsalted. when I did my paranoid "I will now read all labels even though I know I've read them before...
  24. I used to get night 'flop' sweat too - hate that slimy feeling ! And the post-sweat claminess is almost as bad as the sauna during . My theory for me, is it was that my hormones amplified whatever else physical was happening. Both during cycle & also at/right after ovulation. Once I cut out gluten & soy (my triggers-as of yet I seem to be food...
  25. Jin- Not sure about using on color-treated hair (my highlights are peroxide, not color). I actually use the 'DHS Clear' which may be their only fragrance-free version - try emailing them (and check you spam folder, that's where their reply lived for a while in my email). Can take up to 2 wks from order to receipt. Just got a gluten-free/soyF vitamin...
