ARCHIVED Another Confused New Kid
GFinDC replied to SimonSez0721's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Simonsez, Yes, you should wait until all the testing is done before starting the gluten-free diet. Many doctors want the endoscopy as well as the positive blood antibodies before they will diagnose celiac disease. Sometimes the endoscopy is scheduled for several months after the blood tests. If that is the case, you can ask to be put on a wait list... -
Hi, I don't understand 10 positive tests and no diagnosis myself. But, you can hold out for a doctors ok to put her on the gluten-free diet or go with a more cautious approach and do it yourself. We don't need a doctor's permission to eat a gluten-free diet. Since she has developed a goiter it is possible she is hypothyroid. Hypothyroidism can cause...

ARCHIVED At My Wits End
GFinDC replied to sassysteph's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Here are a couple articles about NCGI. There is no standard testing for it yet. It can cause serious symptoms just like celiac disease. Since you weren't on the gluten challenge very long you may actually have celiac disease. But you could also have NCGI. Either way, the treatment is the same, 100% gluten avoidance for life. Maybe in the future... -
ARCHIVED Tips For Expediting Recovery Time?
GFinDC replied to Michael K's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lots of water, pepto bismol, and peppermint tea. -
Just wanted to mention the possibility of reacting to caffeine for some people. Not as a gluten reaction, but some people don't tolerate coffee or caffeine. It's simple to test if it bothers you. Stop drinking coffee and any caffeine for a month and see if there is an improvement. Thanks for the links Stephanie. I'd seen those reports about barley...

Hi Annajazz, A good way to start the gluten-free diet is to NOT go out and buy lots of gluten-free products and go to gluten-free restraunts. Instead concentrate on learning to mostly eat whole foods that you cook at home. The early months of the gluten-free diet are important for healing your gut and recovering. You'll learn faster and have less chance...

Makes sense to me Joy. Take care of it with diet when you can. I can tell you that coffee has a bad effect on me. I tried drinking it over the summer again. Worked fine for a couple weeks but then I got sicker and sicker. I stopped it and got better fairly quick. It just doesn't work for some people. I used to be a big a coffee drinker though. Now...

ARCHIVED Recently Diagnosis And Not Feeling Well..
GFinDC replied to YPG's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi YPG, You are are on your way to being a gluten-free expert! It may take awhile, possibly years, but you are started. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition. That means your bodie's own immune system is attacking itself. Can you say self-destruct mode activated? 10, 9, 8.. Ah, it helps to laugh about these things sometimes. I know... -
ARCHIVED Severe Muscle Wasting
GFinDC replied to totoro's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Totoro! Welcome to the forum! I suggest you print this thread out and give it to your doctors to read. They probably don't understand your symptoms are as severe as they sound. Seeing it in writing might help them get the picture. Maybe your parents should read it too. Ok, weight loss with celiac disease is caused by damage to the villi that... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance Without Your "typical" Stomach Symptoms
GFinDC replied to not4sakn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Not, Welcome to the forum! Did you get a copy of the pathology report for your endoscopy? Some members might be able to interpret that for you. I think the current recommendation is to take 4 to 6 biopsy samples but maybe it is 6 to 8, not sure really. Anyway, the reason for multiple samples is the damage in celiac might not be universally...- 12 replies

Hi Joy, Joy, Joy in the morning! Since you had improvement on the more restricted diet it seems like that is a good starting point for you. I suggest you stick with that diet for 6 months to see how things go. Eating out is always risky, so I think you are right to stop that for now. I suggest you cut out coffee and any other caffeine for a couple...

ARCHIVED Causes Of Gastritis And Changes In The Duodenum
GFinDC replied to Renaye's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Renaye, Biopsies should come back negative for villi damage if you have been eating gluten-free for a while. That would be normal. Testing for celiac disease should always be done before going gluten-free, as the immune response decreases after the gluten is removed. -
ARCHIVED Question For The Group. High B12, Glucose/low Protein, Calcium
GFinDC replied to GF Lover's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Well Colleen, I still don't think you are chewing your bones long enuff! But that may not be it, just not sure. Have you tried taking creatine? It helps with muscle energy and brain thinker thing too. I don't know if it would help but it might. Creatine is part of the energy storage and usage chemical process for cells. I know that cause I read it... -
ARCHIVED Nailing Down The Diagnosis
GFinDC replied to Wheatie NOT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum Wheatie! Your doctor messed up by having you start the gluten-free diet before the blood antibody tests were done. The right way to do it is to do the antibody tests first, then do the endoscopy. Eating gluten-free can be very simple if you stick to whole foods. Processed foods can be tricky for a beginner. Basically avoid anything... -
ARCHIVED Question For The Group. High B12, Glucose/low Protein, Calcium
GFinDC replied to GF Lover's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That link was pretty helpful Colleen. It sounds like the lack of LDH is not a super big concern. Maybe it's nothing to worry about? Elevated levels would be a concern, but low levels seem to be an "ah, so what" deal. So, do you have symptoms of the LDH A deficiency? If not, it seems likely you have the LDH-B deficiency, which they say has no symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Too Limited Diet, And Still Sick. Not Sure What To Do...
GFinDC replied to madminx's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi, Carbs are way overrated IMHO. You don't need to eat lots of carbs to be healthy. Refined carbohydrates are quickly converted into sugars in the gut. So you might as well eat a bowl of sugar. That's really not a healthy way to eat. You should always have some protein with your meals. Protein provides long lasting energy instead of a "bounce"... -
ARCHIVED Coeliac Disease And Food Intolerences
GFinDC replied to fergusminto's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Fergus, It seems to me that if your gut is continually inflammed/irritated, that more food intolerances are bound to develop. Sometimes it requires a patient process of removing most foods and adding them back in one at a time. For me I found that many foods caused reactions, and the last one I eliminated made a significant improvement. For me that... -

ARCHIVED Constipation Got Worse After Going Gluten-Free!?
GFinDC replied to Alaine23's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Alaine, It's significant that your symptoms have changed on going gluten-free. That shouldn't happen to a person if there body is not reacting to gluten. So it's likely you are reacting to gluten somehow. Gluten is anything with wheat, rye or barley in it, including malt. 10% or so of celiacs react to oats also. You are only 24 days into the... -

GFinDC replied to KnightRobby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could also try DGL and mastic gum. They are both good for stomach issues. -
I don't know if it is a big problem or not. Some of the early reports about arsenic in rice warned about infants and people who eat a lot of rice (celiacs) possibly being affected. Seems to me the warning about feeding lots of brown rice to children are probably the biggest concern. You don't have to eat a lot of rice if you are celiac though. I do...

ARCHIVED Another Confused New Kid
GFinDC replied to SimonSez0721's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Simonsez, Open Original Shared Link I don't think they will be able to diagnose celiac disease with the upper GI series. The usual process for celiac testing is first blood antibodie testing (celiac panel) and then an endoscopy with multiple biopsy samples for microscopic examination. Another good thing to get tested is your vitamin and mineral...
