  1. They think there is an auto-immune response in NCGI, just not the same AI response as in celiac. Any AI response (bodie's immune system attacking it's own tissues) is not good for a person. Long term effects have not been studied yet so nobody can tell you what NCGI might result in later. But there is some thinking that Crohn's disease may involve the...
  2. Hi David, Yes, gluten can have big affects on personality. People can have no digestive symptoms and still have celiac disease. Some people only have joint pain, or skin rashes, or nerve issues, depression, or this, or that, and the other too. It is a very variable disease symptoms wise. There are also people who have NCGI, which doesn't show up on...
  3. It's a good idea to get your test results in writing. They are your personal information and you deserve to have them. If the doctor wants to keep a copy you could be nice and let them do that, or not. The antibodies aren't made for no reason. They indicate something is going on in your gut. Damage can build up slowly and get worse over time, so there...
  4. My co-worker who recommended quercetin a few years ago said his wife took it for 5 or 6 weeks and then got substantial allergy relief. We aren't in touch anymore so I don't know if she still takes it. Washing your face and hands often can be helpful. Especially if you do go outdoors. We all have a thin layer of oil on our skin and allergens stick to it...
  5. Hi Rene, Many people have problems with diary when they are new to the gluten-free diet. Celiac disease damages the villi in the small intestine that produce the enzyme that digests diary sugar. So it ends up causing lactose intolerance. Not everyone has this problem, but many do. Often enough the lactose intolerance goes away after being on the gluten...
  6. Thanks for updating us Alphy. The gluten-free diet is helpful for some people with Crohn's so it makes sense it could help with other conditions I think. The important thing is you feel better, and have away to improve your health, by eating gluten-free. Stick around and keep reading. We have several threads on meal ideas and recipes that might be good...
  7. Hi Dozey, How much longer before you get the endoscopy and can go gluten-free? After you go gluten-free things will probably start improving. It may take a bit but if you have celiac disease or NCGI, going gluten-free is the key to improved heath. Gluten can affect any part of our bodies, including the thinker thing. Malabsorption (malnutrition) can...
  8. I used to have lots of swelling in my ankles and feet. It turned out to be a reaction to grapes for me. Edema (swelling) is a typical allergic reaction. It can happen as reaction to any food, not just gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats). You may need to review your diet and see if there is anything you can eliminate that might be a problem.
  9. Ditto what Prickly said. And welcome to t\he forum! Some people do gain weight with celiac disease. You should get a written copy of all your test results to keep at home. That way you can compare your improved results for vitamin levels etc after 6 months or year and see if things are looking better. Don't be surprised if you actually develop...
  10. Quercetin is supposed to help with allergies. Might be worth a try. Or maybe goggles when outdoors?
  11. Just buy meats and veggies, and cook them! We have several threads on meal ideas. If you want I can post them. Here are a few to get you started. Thread For gluten-free, Dairy, Soy, Corn And Nightshade Free Recipes https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/97786-thread-for-gluten-free-dairy-soy-corn-and-nightshade-free-recipes/ Super Easy Meal...
  12. Hi CGVA, Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you are making some big changes suddenly. That's ok but it can cause reactions. Sometimes it's safer to taper off drugs. Some people find melatonin helpful for sleep. Or herbal teas. or both. A little wine before bed might help too. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months...
  13. Dr Peter Green's book says some high percentage of untreated celiacs have bone loss or the beginins of it. I think it was something like 60% or more. Anyhow, a bone density test might be a good idea..
  14. Hi ArriettyPC, 5 years should be more than enough time to heal your gut from celiac damage. But, as others said, there are other possible food intolerances that can cause problems also. Some celiacs have an immune reaction to oats like they do to wheat, rye and barley. There are great number of other food intolerances that can cause symptoms. Nightshades...
  15. "Living Without" is another magazine. Delphi forums has a celiac disease group. You probably need to create free Delphi forum account to view it. Open Original Shared Link Psych Central's Chronic conditions section has some celiac threads. It is not dedicated to celiac tho. Open Original Shared Link Medhelp celiac section. Seldom look...
  16. Hi Marco, Yeast extract is another name for MSG. Some people react to MSG, so maybe that is the cause.
  17. Ah, I can just hear Butters ( South Park ) saying that! I know how that is Dozey. It may be you are lacking some essential vitamins and minerals. When we don't get enough of the right stuff in our diets, or it isn't absorbed due to gut damage, our bodies have problems. Our brains are not immune to nutrition problems. Your doctor can do blood tests...
  18. Well bummer then. It's better fro them to do the endoscopy and colonoscopy at the same appointment. It doesn't really matter if you have a formal diagnosis though. If gluten has a bad affect on your body it's better to avoid it. The ongoing inflammation and irritation in the gut that gluten causes can lead to lots of problems over time. If you are having...
  19. Hi Tracey, Welcome to the forum! Celiac disease can cause a lot of different symptoms. Gerd is one and so is stomach pain. Sometimes our stomachs and guts get very bloated and that can cause pain. Especially when the gut is already inflamed and irritated to begin with. You'll know more after the endoscopy. They should take around 5 biopsy samples...
  20. Sounds like a great idea!
  21. That's good news Alphy. Did he do an ednoscopy? An endoscopy is what they do to check for celiac disease. They take biopsy sample from the small intestine to check for damage.
  22. Hi Kendall2, The advice to stick with whole foods is good. Avoiding spice blends or seasoning mixes is good too. It's safer to use individual spices. You could try cutting out dairy for a week and see if it makes any difference. Lactose intolerance generally causes bloating and diahrea. There is a possibility of casein intolerance also but most people...
  23. Hi Kerrylad, The gluten will leave your body quickly. But the immune system reaction is what takes some time to stop. That could be months before stopping, as even very small amounts of gluten will keep it going. You need to avoid all wheat, rye, and barley. Plus you should avoid oats for the first year as some celiacs react to them also.
  24. Hi Dozey, Celiac disease and malabsorption can cause lots of different mental symptoms. This thread talks about some of them. Short temper thread https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/34917-anger-quick-temper-depression/
  25. Hi Dozey, Insomnia does seem to happen to quite a few of us. Another thing that people talk about with muscle tension is magnesium deficiency. Magnesium helps relax muscles. /too much will cause D tho. Might be something to experiment with. Foods don't always give noticeable symptoms right away. Sometimes effects can build up slowly and get worse...
