ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
GFinDC replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hmm, sounds like a glass alright, but not a glass of wine. Methinks the Karenmeister is learning to make glass. Very cool Karen, please show us some work when class is over.. Sounds like a lot of fun! -
HI, I am not so sure it is lactose causing the problem. It is also possible that casein, the protein in cow dairy is the issue. Lactose intolerance usually causes bloating, and diahhrea. Casein is a protein and is more likely to cause an immune reaction. Lactose is just a form of sugar and if you don't have the enzyme (lactase) in your gut to digest...

ARCHIVED E Containing Gluten
GFinDC replied to luckyme2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the information Lackyme2. That seems like a good system for numbering the ingredients. I don't think we have that exact system here . I noticed that some of the food colorings are the same as the pigments used in paint. Yummy! -
ARCHIVED My Son's Health Continues To Decline!
GFinDC replied to CeliacDad55's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry he isn't doing better yet. Like the previous poster said, whole foods are the way to go. It is also important to check vitamins and meds for gluten, and tea, coffee, and sodas. Once you have switched him to a total whole foods diet with no processed foods, if there is no improvement in a month, then it may be time to look at other foods that... -
ARCHIVED New And Worried
GFinDC replied to kelly97's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Kelly, I don't have those issues but I do know that celiac can affect any part of the body, including the liver. Weight loss is a classical sy6mptom of celiac disease due to the malabsorption,, although some people gain weight also. The good news is that many times just changing your diet will resolve many celiac related symptoms. Here are a couple... -
ARCHIVED B12 Deficiency, Uric Acid, .....................
GFinDC replied to Gemme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Gemme, You can try peppermint tea for bloating. It helps get the gas out/belching. It is not a cure for the cause though. A food journal like Tom said can help with that. Probiotics and low sugar/low carbs can help also. Digestive enzymes may help. The big thing though is to eliminate the foods that are causing the reaction for a while. Have... -
ARCHIVED Devastated, Angry, Frustrated...
GFinDC replied to Momma Bear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey Mommabear, It may take awhile but your body as it heals will be able to absorb more vitamins and stuff that it needs from your food. Sometimes people take sublingual B-12 to help with absorption. Be sure to look for vitamin pills with no gluten, and hopefully no dairy or soy also. Nature Made and Solgar are pretty good brands. You may find you... -
ARCHIVED Reactions To Gluten
GFinDC replied to twe0708's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've thrown up lots of times, and not just from gluten. Projectile chicken anyone? Dang stuff flies real well even after it's cooked. It hasn't happened in a while though. I have trouble swallowing food sometimes and that leads to it being rejected. Bad food! Go way! Happens sometimes when I am too gassed up also. Also doesn't happen much anymore... -
ARCHIVED Help! Celiac And Appendicitis
GFinDC replied to SilverSlipper's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, I'd be telling the hospital not to charge you for the food then. If they aren't providing it they shouldn't charge you for it. Bananas, apples, oranges, lara bars and peanut butter are not hard to find. Some stores even sell boiled eggs. -
ARCHIVED E Containing Gluten
GFinDC replied to luckyme2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmm, I don't think I've ever tried any of those numbers for dinner. Are they better with ketchup? -
ARCHIVED Another Job Related Question
GFinDC replied to Richterface's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
HI, Inhaling flour is a possible problem. Flour is a fine dust and gets airborne and doesn't settle right a way. A dust mask might help. If you inhale flour it's in your sinuses and then your throat and then the gut. The problem with touching wheat or other gluten is if you then get it in your mouth. That can happen accidentally by rubbing your face... -
Seems like I read that skeeters don't like people with high B vitamins in their blood and garlic. Might need some searching though to verify.

Yep, trying to get more milk off the old milk truck, or in my case, kneading my stomach when I am hurting from CC or something else. Never sure how the cat knows that though. By the way, you really aren't supposed to be doing something else while the cat is on your lap. Obviously you should be petting or rubbing it's head and back to let it know you...

ARCHIVED Beer Here!
GFinDC replied to bridgeofsighs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Redbridge is fairly widely available in the USA. Green's is available in higher end stores. Green's is a dark beer and kind of pricey. There are others, I think Estalla Damm Duara Isp)?) is one. Bard's Tale and New Grist also. -
Welcome to all the newbies! We have lots of room at the forum inn, so make yourselves at home.

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant, Celiac, Or Something Else?
GFinDC replied to RCrown2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI Rc, There are a couple possible issues with dairy. Lactose is the sugar in cow dairy that causes symptoms when you can't digest it. Casein is the main protein it and it can cause reactions also. Lactase is the enzyme made by our bodies to digest lactose. Lactase is made by the villi in the small intestine. So, man of us can't digest lactose at... -

GFinDC replied to Boys mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some people react to corn and the are sometimes concerned about zanthan gum because it is cultured on corn. So it is corn cc that is the concern there. -
I agree with Freeform, Betaine HCL can help . It also can help to avoid sugar and carbs. And take probiotics. If the bloating is bad you can take peppermint tea or Altoids peppermints to help release the gas. Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months: Get tested before starting the gluten-free diet. Don't eat in restaurants...

ARCHIVED Is This Celiac?
GFinDC replied to bobtom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi BobTom, The estimated average time to get a celiac diagnosis is 9 years in the USA. Thee are 300 possible symptoms so it can be confusing to diagnose. You could ask your GI if they will diagnose based on blood results and response to the gluten-free diet. Some will do that, others won't. Your schools may provide diet accomadations for him if he... -
ARCHIVED Not What I Expected
GFinDC replied to ivy light's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Ivy, Having a positive reaction to the gluten-free diet is a good sing you are on the right track. That wouldn't happen if there wasn't something going on when you eat gluten. Cooking your own food dosne't have to be complicated. You can cook a good meal in a simple skillet. For breakfast/lunch today I put onions, mushrooms, eggs and Daiya cheese... -
ARCHIVED Does A Gluten Free Diet Actually Cure Celiacs Disease?
GFinDC replied to Richterface's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
@Richterface, Well neat, I have a neighbor named Richter. He is in the Coat Guard though and older. It's good you are taking the gluten-free diet and celiac disease seriously now. The damage builds up over time and can suddenly become much worse also. Sometimes people develop other autoimmune disease if they go untreated. But you can avoid all... -
ARCHIVED What Is Best?
GFinDC replied to Mommyof4beans's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right, the blood antibodies will be reduced if you stop eating gluten. The endoscopy may still pick up some damage if they get the reight spot on the biopsy. But it may not also. The only risk is that by starting the gluten-free diet before the testing that your testing will be inaccurate. It is possible you will get inaccurate results since you have... -
ARCHIVED 12 Weeks Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to Ranne10's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Ranne, It seems like man people on the forum have reported similar reactions when starting out on the gluten-free diet. It doesn't clear up all sy6mptoms right away. There are some things y6ou can do to help reduce the time to heal and also make it easier for your digestive system to do it's job. See the list below. Eating a simple diet of whole... -
ARCHIVED My First Post, New To Intolerance And Still In Distress
GFinDC replied to AnnJay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are quite welcome. This food intolerance stuff can be confusing at the beginning. I don't think rice is a good choice. It's not a very nutritious food, mostly a bunch of carbohydrates. You want to pick foods that are high nutrition and not likely to cause a reaction. Rice has a chance of being cross contaminated also. Chicken, onions, peas, avocados... -
ARCHIVED Is Alcohol Dangerous For Celiac
GFinDC replied to BKA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi NGG, They do make gluten-free beers now. There are several available. Malt is made from barley, so that is probably the problem you had with it. We need to avoid wheat, barley, and rye, and sometimes people have reactions to oats also. I can't drink wine either, but it's a reaction to the grapes for me. I also react to raisins and grape juice...
